A former Nashville police officer arrested on Sunday now faces child pornography, domestic assault and drug charges.

William J. Patterson, 40, was originally arrested for domestic assault after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend during an argument. Police allege that the victim told them during the investigation that Patterson had a sexual interest in children and also dealt drugs.

An initial investigation of Patterson’s laptop allegedly revealed more than 100 pornographic images of children. According to a police department release, detectives also found drug paraphernalia containing traces of cocaine and marijuana as well as evidence suggesting Patterson grew marijuana.

Patterson worked as a police officer in Nashville from 1995 to 2006 and resigned after using the police computer system to run a background check for a family business.

Patterson’s bond was set at $93,000.

DOES it surprise anyone that another cop or x cop committed a crime ?WE should be over the shock after so many of tn finest have been caught and sent to prison for doing the same thing that they arrest other criminals for.years ago a old man said that to be a good criminal and cut down your odds of being caught was to join the police dept i guess he was partly right.

I am not surprised by any of the less savory antics of law enforcement.

The much discussed, highly regarded 'screening process' to identify and eliminate those unsuitable for police work seems to regularly fail. Factor into the equation the propensity for those in the 'brotherhood' to close ranks in the face of public scrutiny, and the culture of 'us versus them' which seems to permeate to the core our public employees, and I for one am not in the least surprised.

I often wonder how many times such behavior is concealed unless outsiders are privy to knowledge of the transgressions, intending to blow the whistle.

I've suggested before, and will once more recommend the book by Norm Stamper, "Breaking Rank," which offers a distressing glimpse of the inner working of American law enforcement and the judicial system working hand in hand with those charged with 'protecting and serving' the public.

(Somehow, the line from the classic Twilight Zone episode, "To Serve Man" comes to mind, "It's a cookbook!)

Another shining example, Metro! Further proof of my theory that only 10% of cops are truly good. Who is vetting these assholes?

Before you lump all of Nashvilles metro cops together I think you need to take note. X cop? He is an Xcop for a reason and they got rid of him. So back off!

Go Dores, Preds, Titans! Go Nashville a great place to live!

He was arrested by the same department he worked at. That shows they aren't covering up anything. I always think it's funny how people say that the police take care of other officers after they read a story where the "police" arrest one of their own. If they covered up for them you wouldn't be reading about it, would you?

There is a flaw in the reasoning process which arrives at the conclusion police don't cover for each other since an ex-cop was arrested.

Someone outside the department, the "Brotherhood of Blue," if you will, was involved, meaning the offense couldn't be covered up without risking a lowly civilian upsetting the doughnut wagon.

While not stated, I can infer the causal event behind his resignation was someone on whom he ran a background check on a government computer discovered the fact and was going to create a situation. To protect the department, he had to sever ties. Naturally, this is only speculation, but not implausible.

Quite possibly, had the girlfriend, presumably a civilian, and not beholding to the department, not been vindictive, informing law enforcement about the sexual interest in children and drug dealing, the case might have stalled at domestic assault.

Sorry, the whitewash doesn't stick to the fence.
