At Opryland, NRA's LaPierre calls Obama deceptive and manipulative on gun control

Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 7:36pm

While in Nashville, one of the nation’s top gun rights leaders took aim at the president for straying from goals to ensure school safety as a top priority this year.

Ensuring every school has access to an armed officer needs to be on the agenda, not pushed aside in favor of gun control measures that will hamper law-abiding citizens, said Wayne LaPierre, National Rifle Association’s executive vice president, to members of the National Wild Turkey Federation Thursday during the group's annual convention held at Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center.

“It’s not about keeping kids safe at school. That wasn’t even mentioned in the president’s speech,” said LaPierre to a group of NWTF officials estimated at more than 500 people.

“They only care about their ... decades old gun control agenda. Ban every gun they can, tax every gun sold and register every American gun owner. The president has taken the art of public deception and manipulation to a whole new level on this one,” LaPierre said.

In the president’s State of the Union address this week, he called on lawmakers to vote on the gun legislation before them, such as stiffer background checks and banning certain weapons and high-capacity magazines.

LaPierre criticized those efforts and instead renewed NRA’s call for the government to focus on installing armed school security officers in every school, an idea lawmakers in Tennessee are also considering but have yet to act on.

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, who said he considers LaPierre a “personal friend,” said he agrees that gun control legislation in Washington is off target.

“What they’re trying to do is simply feel good and doesn’t stop anything. It does just punish law abiding citizens,” said Ramsey. He recalled his wife buying him his family’s long-held gun from his uncle for Christmas, an emotional gift he said brought tears to his eyes.

“She gave that to me as a present. If this law passes, my uncle would have had to do a background check on my wife to make sure that she had no criminal record before he sold it to her. Before she gave it to me on Christmas morning, she would have had to do a background check on me to give it to me,” Ramsey said.

In the same vein, he said the legislation would not deter criminals from buying guns on the street.

While some of the gun control policies up for debate in Washington will not directly affect gun owners who hunt turkey, George Thornton, CEO of the NWTF, said he’s afraid restrictions will pave the way for further dissolving gun protections.

“You really don’t need large clips for hunting. However, there is a very strong belief that once you start to limit things, that the limits continue to chip away,” he said.

LaPierre’s response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address comes at the heels of his editorial charging that an eventual financial fall of the federal government could mean a breakdown of law enforcement.

“Nobody knows if or when the fiscal collapse will come, but if the country is broke, there likely won’t be enough money to pay for police protection. And the American people know it,” read his editorial.

Reporters were not allowed inside the NWTF conference to watch the speech but instead were instructed to watch the feed through a webcast in another part of the conference center.

All I can say is that LaPierre is a damn fool.

By: joe41 on 2/14/13 at 9:28

The headline ought to read "Obama calls NRA's LaPierre deceptive and manipulative on gun control". LaPierre has got to be the biggest joke ever.

By: yogiman on 2/14/13 at 11:24

So you consider LaPierre is deceptive and manipulative on gun control.

Tell me, in the past (let's say five years), how many people have been killed by the use of guns (including mass murders) and how many people have been saved by the use of guns? It's rare the media even mentions someone being saved by the use of a gun.

Also tell me what was behind Barack Obama's thoughts to sign Executive Order 13524 for the use of foreign police in our nation.

Foreign Police, you say? Yes, the INTERPOL of the United Nations.

If you're ready for the usurper in office to take absolute control you won't have to wait much longer.

By: JohnGalt on 2/15/13 at 5:40

Give it up, yogi. The annointed one can do no wrong. It's like trying to teach a pig to talk. You'll just frustrate yourself and the pig.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 6:22

No way, Jose. Your anointed one was born a British subject, not a natural born American citizen.

Why won't he prove who he is? I don't want my children and grandchildren to live under communism. And that is what usurper Obama's goal is.

If he can gain control of our gun rights, American has lost.

By: teresa1963 on 2/15/13 at 6:43

Yogi, paranoid much? People like you scare me more than anyone or anything else.

By: gdiafante on 2/15/13 at 8:13

Yogi is a wee bit obsessed with the President. And I mean restraining order - get the Secret Service involved obsessed.

He's a loon, teresa.

By: bobyounts@comca... on 2/15/13 at 8:23

Won't somebody rid us of this excrement?

By: joe41 on 2/15/13 at 8:34

I wish we could rid this town of Yogiman. He is dangerous and I am just glad that he is part of the 1 %.

By: bobyounts@comca... on 2/15/13 at 8:41

Yogiman belongs in the same category as Senator John McCain. Idiot. How has this coward remained in Congress for so long? Here is a fool who actually told the American people that Sarah Palin would make a great president!!! Someone, PLEASE, take the law into your own hands, and deliver us from the garbage that is running (ruining) our country. John McCain should be neutered.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/15/13 at 8:42

The NRA used to support gun control. I guess he forgot to mention that part.

By: GUARDIAN on 2/15/13 at 8:55

You pro-commuist gun haters just don't understand... there are millions of us gun owners that won't be registered . taxed . or bullied then there are more than enough gun laws on the books to take care of the few crazy people and criminals that shouldn't have guns to begin with... I will ad this one last thought... if your evil leftist government tried to take any of the legal guns from the hands of law abiding citizens there are several million gun owners that won't let that happen... with that knowledge what makes you think that they will let YOU watch from the sidelines... think about that barrel of worms before you want it opened... GUARDIAN-GOD, COUNTRY, FAMILY and FRIENDS. The American Way.

By: gdiafante on 2/15/13 at 9:00

You're as nutty as yogi. If you actually paid attention to what is being proposed, it's very similar to the assault weapon ban that was in place starting in 1994, with more emphasis on illegal gun sales and background checks.

Now, if memory serves, that law did NOT repeal the 2nd amendment.

This is just more hyperbole from the lunatic fringe.

By: bobyounts@comca... on 2/15/13 at 9:18

The poor naive Tennesseans who actually think the government's going to take their guns away from them. They actually think they'll be in a fire-fight with some guy out in the front yard who's come to get their pistol. IF the government ever decides to take your guns, there won't be a shootout in your front yard; a predator drone will fly over your house at 2am and in a split second, you, your family, and your pistol will be gone.

By: jeremiah on 2/15/13 at 9:32

It's a real shame that my grandchildren will have to grow up in a world that has lost its moral compass; a world where might makes right. It never has and it never will. When I go to foreign countries there are armed guards standing outside and inside of banks, grocery stores, drugstores. Is that what you militia types want? I would not want some armed volunteer or rent a cop standing guard at my children's school. Next there will be a gun in the teacher's desk and when they lose it with some rude, obnoxious child, some innocent people will die. Guns want save lives, they will take them. Put someone with martial arts training at the door and then only someone who is a true threat will be hurt.

By: JohnGalt on 2/15/13 at 10:03

"Put someone with martial arts training at the door and then only someone who is a true threat will be hurt."

Unbelievable. Just. Unbelievable.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 10:35

I'm surprised there is so many idiots on this site. All I have asked for is proof Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama is in that office legally.

But none of you have been able to provide it. Why not? Do you believe a British subject is a natural born American citizen?

Why has Barry refused to show his real birth certificate? Why has he refused to show his other legal papers? You know, like his college papers that show him as a foreigner in the schools.

Why did he advertise he was born in Kenya for 16 years before he decided he should advertise he was born in Hawaii?

Since his last acknowledged place of living was Indonesia, what makes you think he isn't still an Indonesian?

Or are you ready for his takeover of the USA?

Wake up, people. If you aren't a fellow communist with him, you'll regret what you're leaving for your children and future heirs.

By: yucchhii on 2/15/13 at 10:53

Too many actually believe that politicians, whether they be deomocrat OR republican are really trying to do the right things. Those are the same people who make the supermarket tabloids a LOT OF MONEY! They actually beieve all that crap. This is how the term "GULLABLE" comes about. The politicians mainly rely on THEM to argue with those of us that KNOW better. The day I start to believe ANY politician, is the day I start to believe the supermarket tabloids. Those who don't believe that there will be a ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT will CRAP their draws when it happens!! IT WILL!!

By: pswindle on 2/15/13 at 12:01

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/15/13 at 12:08

yucchhii, first why don't you try to learn how to spell "gullible." Look in the mirror, that might help.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 1:45

Sorry, pswindle,

But you are the one of the idiots so willing to accept someone as your president who refuses to identify himself.

So tell me, just who in the hell is this man? That is if you know; which you don't because he won't tell you.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 1:48

You shouldn't ridicule others when you're making errors yourself. That makes you look like a fool.

Should others begin editing you?

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 1:53

You must be using a different dictionary than I, B2. Mine accepts gullible also as gullable. Is it wrong?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/15/13 at 1:58

Urban Dictionary: gullable

A misspelling of gullible... most often used to trick people into searching the dictionary for it

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/15/13 at 1:59

I guess you look like a fool but that's nothing new, yogi.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 2:01

If you had been in the meeting I was at this morning you might see more people who aren't idiots like you and your "buddies". Is it just Smith County folks that see what he's pulling?

Tell me how you can accept someone as your president who refuses to identify himself? And don't try to tell me he has.

I'll repeat the question I've posted before: Why did he advertise in his autobiography for 16 years as being born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii? False advertising? BS.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 2:03

Sorry, B2.

My dictionary is a Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Are they wrong?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 2/15/13 at 2:06

Gullable | Easy to understand definition of gullable by Your Dictionary › Dictionary Definitions

Gullable is an alternative spelling for gullible, which is no longer used. Gullible or gullable means easily tricked or fooled. (adjective).

That spelling is no longer used, yogi. So yes, you are wrong. Quit using the old fart dictionary.

Maybe if I "italianized" it for you......

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 2:16

Well, B2,

Being the "old fart" I am, I'm going to continue to use the dictionary I've used all of my life. Why should I change to use a fool's (you perhaps?) dictionary today?

By: BenDover on 2/15/13 at 3:22

Wow... taking a safe society for granted has reached the acme it seems.

The fact your neighbor may be armed and willing to kill an intruder is a tremendous deterrent to criminals invading your own house because the criminal doesn't know who is and who is not.

Now when the criminal knows that law abiding citizens in a city, state or country are inhibited or prevented from owning guns to defend themselves that is when the shield of a 'safe society' dissolves.

By: yogiman on 2/15/13 at 3:38

It's funny, BenDover,

The news media seems to be able to give all kinds of information about someone getting killed by a gun, but they never seem to know about it when someone saves someone's life with a gun. Strange, isn't it?

Guns are the least used kill units used in our society. The big different is the government can't take control over the citizens with guns and they want control.

By: Ask01 on 2/16/13 at 9:17

LaPierre and the NRA are more frightening than criminals with guns. Everyone knows they need to fear an armed criminal. Those legally carrying are law abiding citizens right up to the point they snap and statrt shooting people.

Perhaps LaPierre has a point however, and not just the one on his head. He said in another interview we need to start enforcing the laws currently on the books.

I agree.

Anytime a family member, or even an outsider, steals an weapon from a "legal" gun owner to commit a crime, the owner needs to be prosecuted to the same letter of the law for enabling the crime, by failing to properly secure the weapon.

The FBI couldn't touch Al Capone, so the IRS took him down for taxes. Gun owners won't accept any restrictions on their guns, so make them more accountable to existing laws for negligent homicide and other crimes,

When a child kills themself or another child using a carelessly stored weapon, prosecution needs to be swift and vicious, the penalties increased to drive home the message.

What a concept! Use LaPierre and the NRA's own demands against them.

While we're at it, I read a statement from "Lappy" in which he stated gun owners would stand and fight. That sounds like inciting and encouraging insurrection against the United States government.

Perhaps that should be prosecuted also.

There are several posting here who might deserve some special attention in the same process.

Just a thought.

By: Ask01 on 2/16/13 at 9:22

Curious, isn't it?

The lack of comprehension, I mean.

Not one word has been said about preventing the children from owning their toys. The only issue has been keeping dangerous implements from the hands of the mentally deficient.

Perhaps they fear they wouldn't pass a background check or psychological evaluation.

By: yogiman on 2/16/13 at 1:34

You have certain responsibilities yourself, Ask01. Who put your children in your home, the "guvmunt" or you and your wife. They weren't financially brought into this world by a government and no government should have control over them as our government is doing now by telling you what you can and can't do with them..

I've been wondering when the government will tell you whether to have a boy or girl for your next child.

When you brought those children into this world, you and your wife put many responsibilities on yourselves. The biggest (and hardest; sometimes) is raising them to become a teenager and be honest, law abiding, citizens. Good luck to you in that respect. They're easier to teach when they get a few years on themselves.

By: yogiman on 2/16/13 at 2:24

It's a hard road to travel and hopefully they're straightening the curves out.

By: govskeptic on 2/18/13 at 6:50

Sounds like LaPierre got it about right.

By: yogiman on 2/18/13 at 9:18

An interesting article about the government buying millions of rounds of ammunition.

By: shinestx on 2/18/13 at 4:35

Same old leftist nutjobs here, and not one comment in support of the 2nd Amendment. Sad... so very sad when emotions trump reason. So many problems... so many reasons for government to meddle in our affairs and erode our God-given (Oh no! He Di'int!) rights. You guys believe Obama gives you rights... and of course, he taketh away!

By: yogiman on 2/18/13 at 7:11

The only thing Obama gives is a bunch of lies, but these Obama fans believe he's telling the truth. He doesn't know how to tell the truth.

By: Ask01 on 2/19/13 at 5:37

I believe the pro gun faction should just admit they are scared little boys and girls who jump at the slightest noise.

While those urging limits on certain types of weapons have NOT said a word about total gun confiscation, that is all the NRA and their sheep, with paranoid little minds, can comprehend.

They gloss over the very idea most of those who responsible for mass shootings were legal gun owners until they started shooting, or stole their weapons from irresponsible legal gun owners who failed to properly secure their weapons.

How best to ensure weapons are kept out of the hands of the mentally disturbed?

In depth background checks and intense psychological screening of the prospective gun owner and their immediate family is one thought.

The gun nuts scream like wounded banshees at the thought. I suspect they would never pass the most evaluations is the reason.

Remember children, the only thing a politician fears more than a nut with a gun is a mother with a vote.

By: yogiman on 2/19/13 at 7:36

Every race has to be started before it can be finished, Ask01.

The federal government is our "helping hand", not our masters. Use your weak Democratic mind and think, Barack Obama (if that's his name) is the first man (usurper) in office to push so hard for gun control. Why? To save lives? BS. More people are saved by guns than killed by them. More people are killed by hammers and baseball bats than by guns. Why isn't Barry pushing to abandon them?

If you are willing to have a dictator, Ask01, hang in there with him. If you don't want a dictator, stand by our Constitution.

By: Left-of-Local on 2/19/13 at 10:09

LaPierre is a manipulative slave of the gun industry. Yeah. "Not mentioned in the speech"... because when you talk about protecting kids you assume nobody means where they spend at least 60% of their time. Right.

Responsible and law-abiding gun owners need new representation. This guy is a tool.

By: yogiman on 2/19/13 at 11:40

"Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance. They are the peoples' teeth."
- George Washington

Call it what you want, Left-of-Local, but when the government that was formed to guide the citizens of our nation erases our Constitution and takes our firearms from us, we will have a dictator ruling the USA, not an elected president.

They will have taken control as our superiors, not our employees. Which do you want, a boss or an employee?

"The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon." - George Washington

The "leaders" in DC are in the mode to take over our nation lead by Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama.

"I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.'' ---Ronald Reagan.

Supports stronger enforcement of existing gun laws, would provide more funding for aggressive gun law enforcement programs such as Project Exile in Richmond, Virginia
Supports requiring instant background checks at gun shows by allowing gun show promoters to access the instant check system on behalf of vendors
Supports law-abiding American’s constitutional right to own guns to protect their families and home
Supports the current ban on automatic weapons
Supports banning the importation of foreign made, “high-capacity” ammunition clips
Supports voluntary safety locks
Opposes government mandated registration of all guns owned by law abiding citizens

Source: ‘Issues: Policy Points Overview’ , Apr 2, 2000

In 1989, then President George H.W. Bush issued an executive order halting the importation of some semi-automatic firearms after a mass school shooting Stockton, California. He based his executive order on the 1968 Gun Control Act and used it to ban the shipment of what could be considered “assault weapons” unless they were used for sporting purposes. (Question: Did the free republic cease to exist then?)

Now someone tell me how Obama's proposals are different from the three previous Republican presidents.

By: yogiman on 2/19/13 at 8:49

One step at a time, ancienthighway, one step at a time. If he can throw the 2nd Amendment out the door, you can kiss the USA goodbye.

I suggest you see the list of communist parties that support Barack Obama (if that's his name). Why are the communist parties supporting him?

By: ancienthighway on 2/20/13 at 12:29

From what I understand, Obama's proposals on gun control are nearly the same as the combination of Reagan's and both Bush's proposals. You weren't crying about a 2nd Amendment then. You weren't crying about a secret government plot to overthrow the republic.

Your only source of information seems to be from extreme right wing conspiracy theorist that wants nothing more for open combat in the United States as a means of justifying their existence. The really sad thing is you believe the Photoshop manipulated pictures these sites post are legitimate and the cartoon captions added are true statement.

Let me turn the tables on you and everyone else who swears that good guys with guns stop crime. Prove it.

Prove to me that a criminal was about the rob that restaurant you had lunch in, but he decided not to because he didn't see the "No Guns Allowed" sign at the front door.

Prove to me that you didn't get carjacked last Saturday because you had a gun in your car.

Provide legitimate documentation that Obama was born in Kenya or Timbuktu and his birth certificate issued by the then Hawaiian Territory is a forgery.

Provide legitimate documentation that Obama did secretly convert to Islam and is a covert member of the Communist Party.

By: yogiman on 2/20/13 at 7:11

If you are interested, ancienthighway, I'll start with the list of communists endorsing Obama.

Why are known communists endorsing Barack Obama.

As I 'said', if you are interested, I'll send you more.

By: yogiman on 2/20/13 at 7:18

One more little point, ancienthighway. Hawaii became a state in 1959, they were not a territory in 1961. And the state has never issued a birth certificate certifying Obama's birth there.

The governor in office now claimed to be an old family friend of his grandparents and said he would show that birth certificate the day he was sworn in office. But he looked and hasn't yet. I wonder why.

Want more info?

By: yogiman on 2/20/13 at 7:35

ancienthighway, let me throw one more little bit of BS to you.

Obama said he was adopted by his stepfather into Indonesian citizenship so he could go to school in Indonesia. His mother sent him "home" to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. When did he repatriate his citizenship back to the USA? When did he change his name back to Barack Obama from Barry Soetoro?

By: bobyounts@comca... on 2/20/13 at 8:32

Get used to it. Obama will be president through 2016, and then Hillary Clinton will be president for 8 years.
