ST. PAUL, Minn. — If Republicans wanted another night of red meat speeches, they got it in spades — with vice president nominee Sarah Palin leading the way.
Between former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, no quarter was given to their Democratic opponents.
Each with their own style, the Republican speakers both praised the candidacy of John McCain and at times mocked the experience of their opponents — as well as using another night at the microphone to slam the media.
Nothing said though could overshadow what was the most anticipated speech of the convention, that from Alaskan Governor Palin. She did not fall short, tearing her way into her Democratic opposition.
“What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?” she asked the charged GOP audience at one point. “Hockey moms wear lipstick,” she replied.
She conjured up pit bull images by going after Sen. Barack Obama on point after point, contrasting McCain’s military service to the Democratic presidential nominee’s community service, and her experience as a mayor and governor versus the careers of the Obama/Biden ticket.
In short, Palin did not disappoint the Republican faithful in the Xcel Energy Center.
She painted herself as a “small-town” girl, adding that she patterned her life after many of the small-town folk she grew up with.
“They’re the ones who do some of the hardest work in America, who grow our food, and run our factories, and fight our wars,” Palin said. “They love their country in good times and bad, and they're always proud of America.”
Like many of Wednesday’s speakers before her, the governor couldn’t resist taking a shot or two at the media as well.
“I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly these last few days that, if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone,” she said, then added:
“But, now, here’s a little newsflash for those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this great country.”
After finishing her speech, and as her family joined her on stage, McCain made his first appearance of the convention on the stage of the Xcel Center, causing the crowd to raise their voices even higher.
“Don't you think we made the right choice?” he asked to thunderous applause.
Count Tennessee House Minority Leader Jason Mumpower (R-Bristol) among those impressed.
“Everything that Palin said, showed that the she is the right person for the job,” Mumpower said. “I am terribly excited, and I know that she is the right person to be vice president of the United States.”
Other Tennesseans were equally impressed Wednesday night.
“Like many Tennesseans, the more I see of Sarah Palin, the more I like her,” said Sen. Bob Corker. “She absolutely knocked it out of the park tonight — exceeding all of the very high expectations set for her.”
State Sen. Mark Norris added that Palin “was poetry in motion.”
“And what people heard was the wisdom of the ‘everywoman’,” Norris said.
Tomorrow, on the convention’s final night, McCain will formally accept his party’s nomination before the GOP and Democratic tickets take to the road to garner support, leading up to November’s election.
I would rather have her at the top of the ticket , but it makes me feel a whole lot better voteing for Juan the RINO with the chance that he won't make 4 years and this lady will be waiting in the wings.
Derisive and divisive ... her nasty, mocking speech only served to polarize the parties even more and solidify Obama's base. Probably won him a lot of votes too, last night. But no matter who wins, this nation will not move ahead "country first" if the GOP continues with these desperate personal attacks. I heard very little of substance last night and no call to action as a nation to solve the very real and complicated problems we face at home and abroad. Lots of red meat, but where's the beef?
Divisive? Mocking? Sarcastic? The Dem's have wasted no time in complaining about this lady's electrifying response to their cheap shots and innuendo. I guess the other big Dem talking point is how she denigrated community organizers - that's just one more stretch. This is turning out to be an interesting election.Let's all vote "present" in this year's election.
Palin has now brought life to a rather boring election. She gives those of us disgusted with all politicans a ray of hope finally for a real change.A woman who is offered a jet who inturn won't waste the tax payers dollars and puts the plane on e-bay is whom I will vote for.She is everything Hillary could never be.
Jon Stewart did not disappoint the hypocrisy watchers:http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=184086&title=sarah-palin-gender-card&byDate=true
Actually Beaniej1 I think she was rather inclusive -- actually including the working man and woman, the small town folks "who do some of the hardest work in America, who grow our food, and run our factories, and fight our wars,” Palin said. “They love their country in good times and bad, and they're always proud of America". She's not an elitist and her husband did not flash looks of disdain across the arena such as the ones flashed by Obama's wife. Her children, even amid the controversary caused by their sister, appeared confident and disciplined. The country is ready for some real people to lead . . . real down to earth, roll up your sleeves Americans. And she was right on when she said that Obama made light of her being a Mayor of a small town because his big laud to experience is his being a "community organizer". Well, duh! He was a self-appointed (and annointed) community organizer. Read his book. I have. She was elected by the people, for the people and of the people, just as she will be elected to VP of our GREAT country! I love America. Obama wants to make history . . . McCain and Palin Make Sense!
Palin is typical republican; snide, insincere, and condescending. Funny how much she talked up McCain and his abilities, only to let everyone know that she is just waiting for him to keel over so that she can take the top spot. Say goodbye to America if the GOP wins.
Revo-lou, keep in mind that President's don't have to be old to die suddenly; case in point Lincoln and Kennedy. Duh! Their VP had to take over, didn't they? And I've not met a more snide, condescending person than you, Lou! So are you a closet Republican? Pour it on, bro!
No revo-lou, it's good-bye to you and your half-empty Democrats.
sid – You haven’t met me, and your sure don’t know me.
joke-a-jerk, Don’t let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.
Well, revo, I know your type and you sure come across typical when you write! So I'll rephrase it to: I've never read more snide or condescending remarks.
As I have said before, I am not a diehard dem or repub, but I loved her speech. She may have just swung my vote to her ticket.
And what is your favorite nickname for Obama sidney? Oh, that’s right, Ms Kettle, I am Mr. Pot! Please, I am not talking to the nation, about my abilities to rule, protect, grow, etc. Of course, she wasn’t talking about those either, so again, we don’t know anything about her.
My wife was asking why the media was so "in bed" with Obama and the Dems in general. My answer, and Revo-Lou is the written incarnation, is that the liberal and democratic leadership are arrogant snobs who JUST KNOW that they are better than the ordinary people. For the past 40 years, the media, or at least those willing to respond to the polls, admit voting the democratic ticket 92% of the time. Revo-Lou, you need to wake up and start actually doing some research instead of swallowing all the bilge water being given to you via your liberal sources. Use the mind God gave you along with your heart.
I could go either way, I know how to benefit from both parties. It's just a matter of educating yourself on the policies put in place by either party. I don't care too much for Palin. I think she's trying to be a man. I mean, the thought of her hunting. I mean, that's not cute at all.
The majority of Americans read on an eight-grade level and Palin speech was definitely written for that demographic. I got nothing out of her speech other than the same ole Republican slander. She said nothing about why America should vote for her. Okay, she is the Governor of Alaska and the mother of five children, that still doesn't tell me why I should vote for her.
NewYorker1, how can she be trying to be a man? 5 kids! I don't know any man who can do that. And, her hunting is probably to put meat in the freezer. I know many feminine women from Montana and the west who hunt for food in the freezer. Hunting for sport is not cute. Hunting for food is admirable. And I'll correct you; it's 3rd grade level and her speech was way out of the ball park because obviously a highly educated person like yourself had a hard time comprehending her. You just had to be open minded and pay attention. And my guess is that she wrote it, unlike Obama having speech writers. Lou, please note, I have not used my former phrase of Obama since I said I would not. Unlike Democrats, I keep my word.
Palin's track record is horrible. and citizen, as for as democrats who JUST KNOW, that's bunk. republicans are the ones who JUST KNOW and try to force their religion and hypocritical morale on people at the cost of our civil rights.
B'nazi, you're absolutely correct, it is bunk. Dems don't actually "just know
NewYorker1, what are you talking about? What is a "hole". How dare you call this woman who is a hard working American a "whore". You obviously don't know the definition of a hard working American wife and mother vs. that of a "whore". And you know, people in France don't like American's so no wonder they laugh at you. The French are literary, art and fine cuisine snobs. You, on the other hand, by the way you write and spell, appear to be one of the 3rd graders I mentioned before. Her daughter is a teenager who made a serious mistake -- dating a jock! But get above the gutter and stop calling this woman a whore.
Wow. Some of you people are just vile. Glad you don't decide who is in charge.
It's arrogant & condescending folks like newyorker1 and blanketnazi2 who give God-fearing Democrats a real bad name. Sorry, but you will lose in November....again.
Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, citizen. I have SEEN THE LIGHT, PLEASE LEAD ME citizen, please LEAD ME down the path of righteousness. I am but a lost soul in your gentile hands. Guide me, teach me the WAY, show me more , show me more!!!
Oh, and sid, Palin’s speech was written for her by, drum role, a Bush speech writer named Matt Scully. But she did a great job telling us all about her didn’t she? Hockey moms RULE!!!
Darn morph, you had me until you mentioned unions (generally worthless), mortgage crisis "victims" (I have trouble with the word victim here), and the death tax (which doesn't only affect "MASSIVE" inheritances...well I guess that depends on your definition of "MASSIVE").
it's the hypocrits who give the God-fearing people a bad name, Jok.
Watching her shift gears from talking about herself to talking about McCain was like watching a football team march down the field only to fumble on the 5 yard line. I'm in to it, I'm in to it, I'm excited, oh sh#%, I forgot she was with this dumba*&...fumble. Admittedly, I have not done my homework on her yet, but I like the way she thinks...or at least says she thinks. I don't get caught up in the family hype though. Being a mom doesn't hold much water with me anymore after Pelosi. I bet Hillary was pissed though, so it was well worth it even if she loses.Final point. If I hear another stinkin' Repub say the word "resolve
Hey Magnum... I still love your name.
Sidneyames, if you think for one second that Sarah Palin - or the Republican Party - care about "the working man and woman, the small town folks who do some of the hardest work in America, who grow our food, and run our factories, and fight our wars
morpheus120, you are so correct. I can't believe people are actually considering voting for that tramp from Alaska and that cancer patient. This entire election is hilarious.
Palin is kinda cute but her record on the environment is atrocious, and Alaska as a state is almost as corrupt as Texas. I'll take my chances with the other inexperienced candidate.
Palin actually slashed funding for schools for special needs kids by 62%source: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/04/politics/animal/main4414049.shtml
You Liberal hacks can say Bye Bye Obama…he blew it when you passed up/dissed Hillary…instead he picked a boring Senator to be his crutch on foreign policy. As Jesse Jackson has correctly stated “the only thing Obama has ever run is his mouth”. As a conservative I want our government REFORMED (not changed)!Sarah Palin IS a breath of fresh air from Alaska! The REAL candidate for reform. Governor Palin has true grit, intelligence, integrity and a true love of America. She will not wait for polls or spinmasters to tell us where she stands on issues. Her directness is refreshing. All women should unite behind her and against the biased news media who make up the news instead of reporting it!
Palin's speechwriter writes all my posts.
Why is it when democrats can't come up with educated rebuttals, they always call women sluts and whores. And NewYorker1 if she were a man, duh, let me think . . . like John Kennedy, Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Teddy Kennedy . . . what exactly would you use to define her then? It's true! Democrats don't really like women. Or else why would they be so cruel to an intelligent, hard working democratic woman like Hillary Clinton? I am not like her 100%, but at least I've never called her a whore and been ugly about her womanhood. The liberal, right wing media (including Leno and Letterman) make terrible fun of her all the time. So, slacker, who do you think Palin's speechwriter is? I'd say it's more like "speech proofreader" than "writer" cause I'm sure she has a mind of her own and knows how to pen those thoughts.
What ever it takes to convince yourself there sid. She is all that you need her to be, no matter how she is made up. We get it.Oh, and citizen, I meant to ask you, does your wife think for herself, or do you give her all the answers? Just wondering. I am still waiting for your guidance, by the way. Please don’t disappoint me, like Bush and his “conservative compassion”. I just don’t know what I’ll do if another republican lies to me.
I'll call a man with five kids the same thing. With five kids, you obviously need to find something else to do with your time.
"By: NewYorker1 on 9/4/08 morpheus120, you are so correct. I can't believe people are actually considering voting for that tramp from Alaska and that cancer patient. This entire election is hilarious.By: NewYorker1 on 9/4/08 That is hilarious. Ms Thing got Serta Mattress imprinted on her back."Gosh, what a classy response from New York. Both sides have problems. Obama is the radical left's effort to force diversification on the rest of us - never mind the qualifications. That may hurt them down the road. He barely got half the Dem vote. Let's face it, if it hadn't been for the jump start in Iowa, he probably would've and should've been Hillary's running mate - how many middle America primaries did he lose going down the stretch - oh well, Biden will win those back - oops, we didn't count on the congenial Ms. Middle America, or the Pit Bull with Lipstick. Should be interesting. The Republicans need to get their economic house in order. Healthcare, Unemployment, Inflation - those are real issues and the self righteous attitudes will lose in November. Also, I'm tired of hearing about McCain's military service - point made - the above issues need to be addressed to get my vote. I also think the Government taking a woman's right to choose is no choice at all. If Ms Palin leads by example - good for her, climb aboard, but if it's the full force of the government coming down on women, I can't support it. Help folks by leading, helping, educating not holding a gun to their head.Place me on whatever side you wish. It's all about being reasonable and reforming a do nothing grid-locked Washington. I'm sick of the Party shenanigans.
I'm just keeping it real. I'm just saying what you guys are really thinking but afraid to say out loud. I guess that's the difference between being from New York and the south. We just say it and get it off our chest.
Damn NY1 if you think I hold back, I am gonna have to take it up a notch!! I don’t think many are ready for that!!
I missed her speech, I was raising my kids.
CNN.com ask in a headline article “Palin speech: ‘Home run” or ‘condescending’? (though they should have said Slap shot!). So, I guess there might be a few others who saw something other than that sweet downhome charm!Citizen, can you help me out here? Was she or was she not being “condescending”? I am so confused. I guess if I just watch FOX news, then it will be clear.
Newyorker1, you called her a whore; how can you say a woman who has a gainfully employed husband and who is gainfully employed herself is a whore? I'd say she's a wife, a mother, a woman, a community leader and now a vice presidential candidate. And New Yorker, I have one up on you New Yorkers. I'm from California and have lived in New York, as well as about 14 other states. I'd say I'm well rounded and well educated. Southerners are famous for saying what they mean AND MEANING WHAT THEY SAY, unlike the forked tongued New Yorkers. So Please! Don't beat your chest so much. And revo-low, I saw guts, pride, intelligence, thoughtfulness, and yes, she did fire back some shots. BUT the democrats had the first leg of race when they started the shots firing at the Republicans. So it's only natural to respond with some friendly fire!
lu-lu>> If the Democraps are for the poor for the past 100 years, then tell me why with so many Dems. as President, they are still poor. Sounds and looks like a huge give away program for those who do not want to work
sidneyames, I'm not going to reply to you because you seem sweet and not ready for me, but don't push it. If you notice, I have replied to you directly, but momma is getting real close.
The mighty Raygun was gonna make it great for all, by eliminating the “problem” of government. What did he do, but grow the government to a size larger than it had ever been before. The all POWERFUL compassionate conservative Bush was gonna make the good times roll for all. What did we get? MORE government, an economy sucking wind, an energy plan not even capable of blowing hot air, a deficit likely to never be corrected, a debt likely to never be repaid, a foreign relations nightmare for the next president, etc. And, we now have MORE below the poverty line families and individuals than at anytime in our history. So, tell me, what can a republican do for us?
When TNcon quotes Jesse Jackson and Sid empathizes with Hillary, you have to wonder if the apocalypse is coming....if the Cubs win the World Series I'll really be worried!
Time will tell if McCain is a political genius or a reckless idiot. I am staying away from Mrs. Palin's personal life. Her views, especially social and environmental, clash with mine and the top of the ticket is 72 years old so with not a lot of enthusiasm I will vote Obama/Biden.
Sid, all politicians have speechwriters. You should look into getting one:"The liberal Right-wing media (including Leno and Letterman) make terrible fun of her all the time"When I'm in a bad mood I just read some of these Floyd R. Turbo style posts and laugh......
