A Madison woman faces an aggravated assault charge after police alleged she intentionally hit a school crossing guard with her car Thursday afternoon.

Investigators believe 29-year-old Shanikia Word accidentally bumped Tonya Dunlap, a crossing guard at Madison Middle School. When Dunlap started to call police, Word got out of her car and became upset.

Word then allegedly got back into her car and intentionally struck Dunlap twice. Police arrested Word at her Becklea Drive home. She is being charged with aggravated assault and driving on a suspended license.

Word is free on a $12,000 bond. Dunlap was treated and released from Skyline Medical Center.
