The serial burglar Metro police believe is responsible for at least 47 burglaries in the last eight to 10 months told detectives his $500-a-day drug habit fueled his alleged crime spree.

Convicted felon Jerry Brandon Phifer, 32, according to police, admitted to stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from residences in southern Davidson County. According to police, Phifer previously had been convicted of aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and facilitation of aggravated assault.

Phifer is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond on one count of aggravated robbery and four counts of aggravated burglary, though he’s likely to face more charges after the case is presented to a grand jury. He could also face a probation violation from the state.

Police said Phifer told them it was his addiction to pain medication that drove him to steal merchandise and sell it for cash. Police said a search of Phifer’s home at 212 Cedarview Drive revealed hundreds of allegedly stolen items he’d not yet been able to sell.

For police, the case began to unravel after a Barnes Cove woman reported a suspicious beige Cadillac in the neighborhood and sent police picture of the car. Later, other residents provided more information about the suspicious Cadillac, including the license plate number. A check of the license plate revealed that an Hermitage Precinct officer stopped the car with Phifer in it on March 29, and Phifer immediately became the suspect.

Police tracked subsequent burglaries and located the Cadillac last Thursday. With help from the Brentwood Police Department, detectives placed Phifer under 24-hour surveillance. Police arrested Phifer early Friday morning shortly after he allegedly burglarized a home at 808 Ilawood Drive.

Some of the burglary locations in question include the following: Green Leaf Drive, Enclave Circle, English Ivy Drive, Yorkshire Circle, Brentwood Square, Brentwood Place, Players Court, Red Jacket Drive, Shaylin Loop, Arbor Ridge Drive, Cedarmont Drive, Monroe Crossing, Nolensville Pike, Ilawood Drive, Harding Place and Salem Drive.

After breaking into that many homes, the guy is very lucky he never got shot by a homeowner. I'd say he beat the odds. Hope he can beat his addiction. Sounds like a miserable life.
