Two convicted robbers police say may be behind a string of local bank robberies — including one in Belle Meade in which an elderly man was carjacked — are back behind bars this morning facing federal bank robbery charges.
Ronald Arnell Edmondson, 41, and Antonio L. Frierson, 34, were arrested Thursday after allegedly attempting to rob two banks only 10 minutes apart. A Metro Police helicopter pilot aided in the arrest.
In the first incident, police say Edmondson entered US Bank’s Murfreesboro Pike branch at 9:15 a.m. Thursday and allegedly demanded money from several tellers. Before he got any money, Edmondson noticed a private security guard in the bank and fled to a maroon Chevrolet Blazer. Police say Frierson was the driver of the getaway vehicle that had been reported stolen from Tennessee State University on Dec. 9
Moments later and short distance away, Edmondson allegedly robbed Wilson Bank & Trust’s Donelson Pike branch at 9:25 a.m. Staff complied with his verbal demand, and he fled to Blazer with cash in hand.
The pilot, who had flown to the area after the bank robbery call, spotted the suspect and guided officers to the vehicle’s location on Briley Parkway, police said.
While crossing the Cumberland River Bridge, the Blazer blew a tire. The two abandoned the vehicle and took off on foot, police said. Frierson was apprehended moments later on Brush Hill Road.
Edmondson surrendered to police after they located him in a building at the intersection of Brush Hill Road and Ruskin Avenue. He had forced his way inside.
The FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force say they strongly believe Edmondson is the same man who robbed Fifth Third Bank’s 4501 Harding Pike branch on Monday, crashed his getaway vehicle and then carjacked a senior citizen in the parking garage adjacent to the Belle Meade Plaza Shopping Center. He is also a suspect in other recent Nashville bank robberies.
Edmondson has a number of convictions, including for forgery in 2008 (four-year sentence) and robbery in 2001 (eight-year sentence)
Frierson also has a number of convictions, including for auto theft in 2007 (four-year sentence) and aggravated robbery in 1998 (10-year sentence).
Edmondson and Frierson are being charged today with one federal count each of bank robbery. Additional charges are expected.
