The Metro Nashville Police Department fired Officer Jonathan Smith Thursday following a disciplinary hearing after he was accused of shoving a female prisoner.
The department decommissioned Smith, relieving him of his police authority, on Nov. 7, the same day he allegedly shoved Yolanda Mitchell, 54, while she was waiting to be booked into jail.
Mitchell received cuts to her face and required stitches. The MNPD launched an internal investigation into the incident as well as a criminal investigation into Smith’s actions.
On Dec. 8, police charged Smith with felony aggravated assault and on Jan. 19 Mitchell filed suit against Smith and Metro in Davidson County Circuit Court.
Smith, 29, graduated from the police academy last April.
