UPDATED — An investigation by Metro Police and Nashville Fire Department officials has concluded that the burned body found early Thursday in the downtown homeless camp under the Silliman Evans Bridge was the result of a tragic accident.
The body of Kevin R. Goins, 44, was found lying on the ground at 7 a.m. in an area just outside the enclosed community known as Tent City, police said.
Police reports said it appeared the victim was sitting on a plastic crate near a fire when, for reasons unknown, he fell forward into the fire. Witnesses told police that Goins appeared extremely intoxicated when last seen around 4 a.m.
Wednesday night was one of the coldest nights of year with lows dipping into the 20s. Police said the man likely was attempting to keep warm, and Tent City residents told investigators that many do use a community fire for warmth.
The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy Friday.
