An elderly man was killed Tuesday while he was taking an early morning walk along Lebanon Road in Hermitage. He was struck at 5 a.m. by a pickup truck near Sweden Avenue.
Jerry Norman Sr., 74, lived in the 4100 block of Lebanon Pike. Family members told police he took daily walks in the area.
The driver of the truck, Charles Mays, 44, of Crossville, Tenn., told police that Norman stepped off the curb into the roadway.
Mays said he lost control of his truck as he swerved to avoid hitting Norman. His truck struck a telephone pole, hit Norman and rolled over.
Norman was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. Mays, of Crossville, Tenn., was transported to Summit Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
There was no evidence of alcohol or drug impairment on the scene.
