Staff reports

One of two men believed responsible for the beating death of Tommy Lee Perkins outside of the Ravin Motel early Tuesday Morning is in custody.

Justin Dexter Brummett, 20, of Honeysuckle Road, was charged with criminal homicide after police said they received calls from concerned citizens pointing to Brummett’s involvement in the murder.

Brummett was arrested Wednesday afternoon, and according to police, admitted to hitting Perkins. They believe Brummett and another suspect confronted Perkins before repeatedly punching and kicking him in the head.

Robbery may have been a motive as police said the two suspects took money from Perkins, though it doesn’t appear Perkins knew his attackers.

A group of people walking by around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday found Perkins’ body on Artic Avenue near Brick Church Pike, off the motel property where he lived.

Brummett is jailed on $75,000 bond. Police continue to look for the second suspect.

BEOWULF: Willful homicide by any means is tradgic, but when beating and kicking someone to death the level of hate and anger is such that it is likely to happen again. These two should have no "deals" and be put to death ASAP. Their mindset is like that of a child molester ~ "give me the chance, I'll do it again". They would endanger less violent inmates' lives who desire to change.

I understand Beowulf's point. I don't know if race is an issue, but it does sound like a "hate" crime whether or not it meets the legal definition. Congrats to Police for getting results so swiftly. no one is ever put to death ASAP unless the arresting officer is forced to use lethal action. The reason is to make sure that the right people are apprehended. Gang members have been known to give false testimony (directly or thru 3rd parties) to lay the blame on someone other than who they are protecting.

Let us pray that all the ball players survive unharmed this week, and forever.

The biggest thing going is the Penn State- Alabama game; at Tuscaloosa 7pm.

The light skinned black freshman quarterback will have his hands full, during the game and afterwards; i believe.
