Public memorial, viewings for McNair on Thursday

About three dozen people turned out for a candlelight vigil Tuesday to remember Steve McNair outside his restaurant, Gridiron9, on Jefferson Street. / Matthew Williams for The City Paper

Two viewings for friends and fans to pay their respects to the late Steve McNair will be held Thursday prior to a public memorial service that evening.

The first viewing will be held from 8 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. at Lewis and Wright Funeral Home, 2500 Clarksville Pike. A second viewing is slated for 3-6:45 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church.

The memorial service is set for 7 p.m. at Mount Zion, 7594 Old Hickory Blvd. in the Whites Creek area of Nashville.

McNair, a native of Mt. Olive, Miss., was found dead Saturday at a condominium he rented downtown. His death has been ruled a homicide. Police have yet to issue a determination in the death of his female companion, Sahel Kazemi.

The former Titans quarterback was a parishioner at Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he attended regularly with his wife and family.

In lieu of flowers, the McNair family is asking people to donate to the Steve McNair Foundation, 1 Willow Bend Drive, Hattiesburg, Miss. 39402.

Tuesday night, a vigil attended by about three dozen people was held outside McNair's Jefferson Street restaurant, Gridiron9. Led by Pastor Oscar Carter of the Greater Heights Missionary Baptist Church, the group which included Rep. Brenda Gilmore, sang and prayed at the event.

While funeral arrangements are still being made in his home state, a memorial service will be held Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Miss., on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.
