Rep. Cooper responds to shooting of Arizona congresswoman

Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 5:55pm
Staff reports

U.S. Congressman Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.) issued a statement Saturday afternoon describing House of Representatives colleague Gabrielle Giffords, a victim in a mass shooting earlier during the day, as “humble, friendly, capable and down to earth.”

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat beginning her third term in Congress, was speaking at a Safeway in Tucson when a gunman identified as Jared Loughner opened fire. She is listed in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. Reports indicate the bullet passed through her brain.

“Gabby Giffords is one of the nicest people I've ever met,” Cooper said. “I always worried about her husband, [astronaut] Capt. Mark Kelly, when he was up in space or piloting a Navy plane. It turned out that the real threat was in Arizona."

Cooper, who represents Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, has enjoyed a close working relationship with Giffords since she began her work in Congress after first being elected in 2006.

“There is no finer person than Gabby Giffords,” Cooper said. “Please pray for her and all the other victims of the shooting.”

Reports indicate 19 people were shot at Giffords’ “Congress on Your Corner” event. Three of those shot include members of the congresswoman's Arizona-based staff. Six have died, including one of Giffords’ aides, while nine are in critical condition at the University of Arizona Medical Center.

U.S. District Judge John Roll and a 9-year-old child were among those killed in the attack.

I hope they torture the scumbag.

This was truly a horrible and despicable act. The people of this country are really up tight and I can understand that. We are not in a state of anarchy as yet and I hope that this country can avoid that.

This young man was far far more screwed up than any country in this world.

Why? why? why? would this simpleton act in such a manner. What did he expect would happen as a result of his planned atrocity

By: spooky24 on 1/9/11 at 5:28

Madness has no purpose or reason but it always has a goal. The 'why' here is quite easy perhaps this might bring some togetherness in D.C. and get something done

This murder appears to be the lone act of a derange person that pulled the trigger, but there are plenty of deranged people out there and they are being encouraged to act on the call to arms by TV personalities. Should people like Limbaugh, Beck and Paling be held partly to blame for the murder of a nine year old child along with five others, plus the wounding of others or will it be just one of those things that gets swept under the rug?

I know the tea bagger (the political group) will be giving their song a dance explanation as to way they should not be held responsible. Or perhaps that song and dance will be that all side does it. Maybe this is true, but not all sides have Limbaugh who only cries for the destruction of the left. Beck’s works for a television network that only caters is to damn any liberal and progressive thinking. Palin is riding high on that same tune and using such phrase as Pit Bull with lipstick, Mommy Grizzly or using the cross hairs of a gun to target Democratic seats and making money as she does.

Limbaugh, Beck and Palin have the right for “Free Speech” but free speech goes along with responsibility for that action.

By: njmccune on 1/10/11 at 8:53

We can blame Karl Rove for the current vicious political climate. The architect of all the bush era dirty tricks campaigns made it OK to do anything to defeat an opponent. The deranged among us can & do cross boundaries... that is what mental illness is all about... this man obviously took campaign rhetoric from a woman who will do anything to remain in the spotlight and acted upon it. Do we need more murders before we see what this woman and her followers are?

By: TITAN1 on 1/10/11 at 11:06

I don't blame anyone except the psycho who pulled the trigger.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 11:58

I disagree, Titan. There are a lot of people to blame. Anger is something that is accumulated from many sources. His was just focused on Congresswoman Gifford

By: njmccune on 1/10/11 at 12:17

And who created that focus??? Wonderful if it had anything to do with crosshairs on a map???

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:18

Idiotic leftists like Nemo are obviously partisan simpletons who somehow (conveniently for them) overlook the acts of leftist anti-American groups and assailants like Oswald, Sirhan, Weather Underground, SDS, Black Panthers, the Reds in Europe, the socialists in early 20th Century America (Lexington Ave. bombing and Tarrytown), not to mention Obama's own quote: "If our enemies (i.e. the GOP) bring a kniffe, we'll bring a gun." No sir! I guess in the deranged mind of a leftist dupe, all this hatred started with Rush LImbaugh and Sarah Palin (no "g"). Yet, the leftist hacks who were so careful "not to jump to any conclusions" when Hasan opened fire at Ft. Hood... and Muhammad in Arkansas... and countless other acts of islamic terrorism. Never mind the fact that this Loughner has been described as a wacky leftist by classmates, loved the writings of Hitler and Marx, and had a shrine of skulls dedicated to Satan. Of course, we all have come to expect a dispicably willful ignoring of (inconvenient) facts by the Dem-wits on the left when an opportunity to politicize tragedy arises. Thank God that Americans are no longer fooled by them.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:26

But getting to the point of this puffy piece, Jim "Stupor" Cooper is a worthless representative. But I guess I better stop this hatred or another leftist might shoot someone.

Notice how it's called "hate speech" whenever someone disagrees with leftists. Now Representative Clyburn (D-SC) wants to use this tragedy to make it easy for the congressional elites to circumvent the TSA checkpoints that the rest of us regular people have to go through. Considering that "Stupor" never opens his mouth unless no courage is required, did this writer ask him what he thought about his fellow Dem-wits legislation (already on the quick draw) to outlaw guns (McCarthey, D-NY) and Clyburn's ridiculous proposal? Mmmm-mmmm (head shaking), nope.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 2:38

First off shinestx I am not a leftist and second Loughner sound more like a Tea Bagger according to his friends.

"He was like ... 'What do you think of these people who are working for the government and they can't describe what they do?'" one friend told The Associated Press on Sunday.

"He did not like government officials, how they spoke. Like they were just trying to cover up some conspiracy," the friend added.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:40

And let's not forget the Unabomber, ELF and the Armed Resistance Unit. Leftist, leftist, leftist. BTW: all support groups of the Dem-wit party in America. I guess Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin, and let's not forget Newt Gingrich and Karl Rove, drove them all to do their dastardly deeds. Ooops, nope. They weren't even well-known public figures at the time. Nice try!

Or maybe you subscribe to the opinion of the loony sheriff of Pima County, AZ, Clarence Dupnik, who said all this hate speech is nothing like the country was when he was young (he's 75). Of course, he is a Dem-wit hack, who cannot seem to remember the murders of JFK, RFK, MLK, and attempted assassinations of Truman, Ford and Reagan. Guess all that hatred started when the Republicans gained the Congress in 1992... of course, led by Rush Limbaugh.

Shall I go on, or are you feeling quite foolish by now?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 2:42

Now with that post about Cooper it shows us who hate who.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 2:45

Now I see where shinestx gets his misinformed gutter thinking.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:45

I suppose I should be arrested and subject to federal hate-crimes violations, huh? You're the one using the word, hate. Last I checked, it's still legal (attempts by the Dem-wits notwithstanding) for me to say that I dislike "Stupor" and believe he is absolutely the worst Congressman in Tennessee history.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:47

You'd love to shut down anyone who disagrees with you. But we expect that sort of "thinking" from lefties... or I believe the preferred term is "regressives".

By: GUARDIAN on 1/10/11 at 2:48

GUARDIAN-Jared Loughner was a 9-11 conspiracy freak but I'm not going to blame them for him being crazy. Jared Loughner hated George Bush but I'm not going to blame all those that hate George Bush. Jared Loughner was a liberal all his adult life but I'm not blaming them. Jared Loughner was an atheist and a Satan worshiper but I won't blame them either. Jared Loughner hated guns and the one he used was the first one he ever owned by I won't blame the gun haters. Jared Loughner loved communism and Van Jonea' "Bottom up-Top down" theory but I won't blame them either. Gabrielle Giffords was a blue dog democrat who was Pro-life, Pro-gun rights, Pro-military and she voted against Nancy Pelosi as democratic leader of the House but I won't blame those democrats who didn't like her for those things. I do blame Jared Loughner's parents for not getting him help. I do blame the law enforcement them for not doing something with him after all the calls they had on him. I do blame Jared Loughner for being evil and doing what he did. Enough said.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:49

Hardly the profile of a Tea Partier. Then again it may be that of a Tea Bagger... but I'm not sure what one of those are... The leftist Dem-wits seem to know quite well what a Tea Bagger is.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:50

Easy for the lefties to overlook those stubborn old facts.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 2:52

No it is still safe for you to make hateful remarks about law maker in this country, but I think that the Republicans will be back stepping from those that make post like yours shinestx.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 2:58

"blah, blah, blah, ... but I think that the Republicans... blah, blah, blah."

First, there's not much evidence of the claim that you think. But that aside, you can voice your unsubstantiated opinions to your heart's content.... they're still obviously flawed. Care to give any ideas to back up your "thoughts"? LOL... I love the way the left always steps in their excrement... and now as they attempt to politicize this tragedy, there is push-back like they've never seen before. And so, little lefty "regressive" parrots like Nemo (the name means vindictive nobody) are reduced to saying things like "I think the Republicans will be back stepping...". Hilarious, and I think the Dem-wits and their minions in the news media already are backstepping.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 2:59

Do you carry to proved us with any fact, shinestx or GUARDIAN

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 3:01

Huh?!? Literate much?

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 3:05

Using my advanced powers of thought, I believe you are asking for proof (you didn't specify for what), but I'll assume you meant the allegations that Loughner was far more sympathetic to leftist, regressive, Dem-wit causes that to conservative Tea Party idea... So here are just a couplel of current articles on the background of this man. Importantly, these are truthful accounts from people who knew him and reporters who actually did real footwork, instead of reading a teleprompter and talking with the usual parade of leftist hacks at MSNBC.

First one....

and I'll have to get another one as the Phoenix Times page is messing up my virus software. Time to logoff.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 3:17

Your first link shows that he is a Devil Worshiper and the second one says he was deranged. What is you point?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 3:18

I must have gotten to close to the truth for you shinestx. Your response is way over reactive and just right down hostel. Like I said the back pedaling and blaming the Democrats shows me that you think that your rhetoric has backfired and public opinion will turn against you.

By: bfra on 1/10/11 at 3:32

shintex rages like a loose cannon!

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 3:37

A cannon even a loose one has substance.

By: bettysands1 on 1/10/11 at 3:40

Here's the bottom line: Tennessee, like many states, including Arizona, has practically no options for severely mentally ill persons. If this violent act is an example of anything, it demonstrates the need for "the people" (acting with the force of government) to protect ourselves from further violence by providing housing and treatment options for severely mentally ill persons.

As I understand the views of libertarians, this madman is free to act on his own - or ielse t's up to his poor family to protect themselves and the rest of us.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 3:48

That is true bettysands1. Thanks for posting.

By: GUARDIAN on 1/10/11 at 3:48

GUARDIAN- I didn't blame anyone but the shooter. The truth has driven you crazy Captain Nemo you can't write your question correctly. I repeat I didn't blame the left for the shootings I only blamed the shooter, his parents for not getting him help and law enforcement for their part in not doing something about his past.

By: bettysands1 on 1/10/11 at 3:57

Unfortunately, "law enforcement" has no resources or authority to do anything for mentally ill persons unless a mentally ill person demonstrates active homicidal or suicidal actions in front of the police - like hold a knife to his throat. And even if this happens, who is supposed to pay for the 3-day inpatient stay until the is released back to the streets?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/10/11 at 4:04

It has not driven me crazy GAURDIAN I just ask for proof and shinestx gave none. So far you have not given me any proof either.

By: shinestx on 1/10/11 at 4:35

Okay, one last time for the one here (vindictive nobody) who cannot seem to connect the proverbial dots. Contrary to all evidence brought forth by articles to which I conveniently provided links, or the fact that Loughner hated G.W. Bush and was a "9/11 Truther", Nemo still doesn't understand (not surprisingly) that Loughner doesn't fit the profile of a Tea Partier (or as he puts it a Tea Bagger, which he apparently knows much more about than I do). So whether he wants to admit it, or just simply doesn't yet know it: I kicked the sh!t out of Nemo's liberal, pansy @ss. That happens to people who are too emotional to think for themselves.

Now folks, we have entered a new era in this country. Solid Ameicans who care about their country are tired of the power grab of the leftists in the Dem-wit and Socialist organizations in government, media and academe. We have seen their overreach and have awakened to the lies of the left and their propagandists in the media. That explains the rejection of the Dem-wits and the coming defeats in '12. Because it wasn't just Tea Partiers, or conservatives, or Republicans who rejected Nanzi and B.O., but it was moderates and erstwhile Dem-wits who used to be duped by the lies of the left. Now we resolve to fight all the lies of the left with the truth, and the left (predictably) is becoming unhinged.

By: njmccune on 1/10/11 at 5:19

shinestx, you are a knuckledragger...

By: GUARDIAN on 1/10/11 at 5:27

GUARDIAN-NEMORON you need to listen, watch and read more about the news. Then you won't need others to look up the links and truth for you. "BOY" get out of the outhouse and wasting all those corn cobs. Burn that JC Penny catalog before someone notices all the men's underwear section is worn out. While you are at it burn all those copies of Goat's Life magazine. Get out more into the real world but leave your girlfriend home. She is much to hairy and no one will understand the horns.
