State lottery gets legislature nod

Tennessee will now have a state lottery as the General Assembly in its last day of work this year passed legislation Thursday forming a corporation to sell tickets and award prizes.

The legislation will now go before Gov. Phil Bredesen for his signature.

The often-contentious debate over how a Tennessee lottery should be instituted ended as a House-Senate conference committee settled on the corporation set-up earlier in the day and sent the report to each floor for a final vote. The Senate vote was 27-6, the House 73-23. Sole Davidson County
