Members of the United Steelworkers from across Middle Tennessee plan to gather Thursday morning to kick off their ‘Make Our Future Work’ program, which includes a push to get Metro Council to introduce an economic stimulus bill spending resolution.
The union will deliver the resolution regarding the spending of Federal Economic Renewal Grants — part of the stimulus bill recently passed in Washington, D.C. — at the offices of the United Steelworkers International Union, 3340 Perimeter Hill Drive.
Thursday’s event urging Metro Council’s passage of the resolution is part of similar efforts across the Midstate. Workers plan to tell their personal stories about what “Buy American” means to them, and why it is important for local governments receiving federal stimulus dollars to spend that money to create and maintain U.S. jobs, union officials said.
Workers from United Steelworkers, the Middle Tennessee Central Labor Council, Middle Tennessee Jobs with Justice will be represented at the event.
Buy American is great for US steel, but not for the producers of products that need the steel.US-produced steel is relatively expensive and forcing producers to purchase US-produced steel will only raise the prices of finished goods. Not what we need. Don't be fooled by bumper sticker politics.
VUGuy is right. Although it sounds patriotic to "buy American" our economy is too interwoven with the global economy for such practices to have any real, beneficial effects. Conversely, any government sponsored efforts to favor American products over those made elsewhere could actually backfire by causing retaliation or lawsuits by our trade partners. My heart keeps me looking for made in America labels, but my wallet dictates I find the best value for my dollar regardless of where it is made.
It's like anything else. American products create and preserve American jobs. If all you are worried about is "cheap
Wait until barry finishes with them with his energy "plan".Promos we have no trade "partners" we are the largest market in the world and we gave it away for free.We have a recession (self caused) and it has spread around the world because we ain't buying. We could not fight WW II today and we are no longer an independant nation. We could be defeated just by cutting off the supplies that we gave away, includeing the oil the tree huggers won't let us drill/harvest.
Obama's cap and trade will cause the price of US steel to skyrocket and be unaffordable. Steel imports will be the only option. Sorry union, it's for the climate.
