Sylvan Park Elementary students met with seniors from the Senior Renaissance Center Friday at the Sylvan Park Community Garden to harvest what they planted last spring.

The 60 second graders munched on popcorn and enjoyed the results of their hard work since April at the garden, located at the Cohn Adult Learning Center.

The students planted radishes, green beans, and peas, which they had sprouted in cups in their classrooms, said Community Education Coordinator Jim Polk.

The community garden project emerged from a series of activities coordinated on site through the Community Education program, including the Earth Day celebration in April, which brought several hundred people to the garden.

The garden is a true community effort with support from an HCA grant, the Cohn Adult High School, the Senior Renaissance Center, Earthmatters Tennessee, ABC Development Consulting, the Metro Government and Metro Schools, the Refugee Program students at Cohn, the Sylvan Park Elementary School, the Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association, TenneSenior Americorps, the University of Tennessee School of Social Work, and numerous community businesses and individuals.

Polk said there are several plans to add to the project.
