Staff reports

Metro police are working to identify the gunman who shot a 16-year-old early Sunday morning in the Edgehill public housing development.

Lamar Hughes, a convicted felon who lived on Elliott Avenue, was outside with family and friends when a gunman approached and shot him just after 1 a.m.

He died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police described the gunman as a stocky black man with short hair. He may have fled the area in a 1990s model Chevrolet Caprice with a black body, green top and custom wheels.

Authorities are still trying to determine a motive in the shooting.

Hughes pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated burglary and one count of aggravated assault in June and received a three-year probated sentence.

Anyone with information on the gunman or the Chevrolet Caprice is urged to contact Detective Shane Stokes at 862-7414 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.

Probably GANG related. If they are BOTH part of a gang, then GREAT, let them shoot EACH other. One shot the other BUT the other didn't get shot, THAT's the only sad thing about it!!!

Let the gangs kill each other. But as as for everyone else....Sounds like another example of an idiot with a gun. This is the reason for our 2nd Amendment rights. For those of you who oppose people carrying guns just think how many lives could have been saved at Columbine, V Tech and the post office, These three incidents alone had over 24 fatalities, just think if one responsible citizen had a weapon, how many lives could have been saved. For those of you who think the police are your best protections. See above, it didn’t work out so well for them. A good rule of thumb is.."when a life is at stake and seconds count the police are just a few minutes away" . No, I not bashing the police. They are over worked, under paid and most do a great job. But, what I am saying is we simply cannot rely on just the police to protect us, we are responsible for protecting ourselves and our families.
