As expected, Fred Thompson’s “testing the waters” committee reported today raising $3.4 million for his looming presidential candidacy, which is below the $5 million goal.
Thompson called the “level of support and enthusiasm from people across the country inspiring.”
“It tells me that people are ready for a leader who will change the national attitude from political bickering to a shared vision for our future,” Thompson said in a statement. “A leader who will bring us together, one who understands the challenges we face.”
The report covered June 1-30.
Thompson’s committee filed the information with the Internal Revenue Service today. Donations came from all 50 states, with 7,534 of the 9,167 contributions coming online.
Thompson not reaching the $5 million goal continues a recent rough stretch for his potential bid. He had a major staff shake-up last week and has new campaign managers.
Meanwhile, Thompson has still performed very well in national polls of Republican primary contenders, often leading or being a close second.
The average contribution was $369.87. About two-thirds of the total contributors, 6,888, gave less than $200.
The committee spent $625,745 with $66,750 on “Web hardware” and $106,852 on payroll.
The committee said it had not done any direct mail or telephone calls.
'Looming' is a good choice of words...
Looks like "haves" and the "have mores" aren't interested in another dumb macho man.
When only millionaires can run for high public office and their campaigns are judged not by the merit of the candidates but by the sums of money raised, I fear for the future of our country as a democracy. It sounds more like a plutocracy to me.
Vankent, frankly, if a candidate were not a self-made millionaire, I would not campaign for, donate to, or vote for he or she. Losers, like complainers, are a dime a dozen. However, those that can implement their ideas are priceless. This may come as a shock to you, but this nation was been bankrolled by the rich well before it was the United States of America. In fact, had it not been for Benjamin Franklin (America’s first self-made millionaire and diplomat), Robert Morris, Jr. the Financier of the American Revolution, and the French Government our Red, White and Blue, probably, would still be that of the Union Jack instead of Old Glory. Nonetheless, with all of the advantages and opportunity that this wonderful nation bestows upon its citizens, not to be financially comfortable is an insult to those Americans that have given so much of their lives that you and others like you could participate in the wealth of opportunity to earn what you are worth.
Time for Truth and 37205Democrat aka Dumb and Dumber. The smart money is waiting for ALL of the candidates to toss their hat in the ring, so to speak, before they commit their campaign contributions.
"Haves" and "Have mores"? Did I miss something? Have the capitalists been so verbally beaten down, that the shrill liberal socialists are now openly celebrating that failed system called "communism".
