Throw a flag on NCAA

Sports talk shows should start celebrating right now. The NCAA has just made a move to adjust the video replay system in college football. In a move reminiscent of ongoing tweaks to the Bowl Championship Series formula, a change designed to fix one thing will only create a new set of problems.

The NCAA will now allow a football coach to challenge one ruling by officials per game and have it reviewed, provided his team has a timeout. This rule is in addition to the existing replay system where an off-field official informs the referee on the field if a play needs to be reviewed.

The added rule gives the coach a say in the process. Before, he was powerless and at the mercy of the nameless, faceless replay official upstairs, who for all he knew could have been eating hot dogs and surfing the Internet.

The wrinkle is the NCAA told coaches every play was already being reviewed by the off-field official. If that was the case, then why the need for a coach to challenge a play that has already been reviewed? Wouldn
