Trio held on federal firearms charges following gang shootout

Three men arrested in connection to last week’s gang-related shootout in North Nashville are being held without bond and have been charged with federal firearms offenses.

Police arrested Finis Lewis, 33, Quinten Smith, 26, and Corey Lynn Smith, 26, all of Nashville, on July 11 following a mid-afternoon shootout on Albion Street near Hadley Park in which more than 100 rounds of ammunition were fired from handguns and assault-type weapons.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced in a release Friday that Lewis and Quinten Smith — who were both previously arrested and held without bond — also have been indicted on the firearms charges by a federal grand jury.

The grand jury indicted Lewis on a felon in possession of a firearm charge, while Quentin Smith was indicted with unlawful possession of a firearm after being convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence. Both face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of those charges.

Corey Smith, who was shot in the chest during the shootout, faces a criminal complaint charging him with making a false official statement to federal agents. Metro police said at the time, he identified himself to investigators as someone else when asked for his name. He also allegedly gave agents a false date of birth and said he’d not been previously arrested. That charge carries up to five years imprisonment.

Corey Smith, however, had been arrested for multiple crimes and convicted of multiple felonies as well as had state probation violation warrants pending against him at the time of the recent incident. He has also been ordered held without bond, and his case was bound over to a federal grand jury.

An active investigation by ATF agents and Metro Nashville Police Department officers is continuing.

Clarence Claybrooks, of Nashville, was killed during the shootout.

I hope they, the fed's and local law enforcement, file as many charges as they can think of, including feloney murder for the death of the other gang banger. These animals need to be taken off the streets for good, all of them.
