Police say no charges are expected to be filed against a taxi driver, who struck two homeless men on West End Avenue early Sunday morning, killing one of them.

William Hill and Ronald Hall, both 50, were allegedly crossing West End Avenue at 17th Avenue South at 2:45 a.m. when they were struck by a taxicab, police said.

Police say Haji Samat, 64, who was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan, did not show signs of being impaired. Samat told police he did not see the men who were not at a crosswalk.

The two men were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where Hill was pronounced dead, according to police. Hall is in stable condition.

What do you want to bet the driver was on his cell phone?

The crosswalks are not there to make the street look pretty, folks.
Pedestrians not using them are taking a big risk.

TN needs some updated crosswalk laws!

Alphadog7, How would that have helped these people who neglected to use them?

If this happened in the pre-dawn hours, visibility was obviously poor.

I'm sure the police report and reporter would have mentioned if the driver was using his cell phone, considering the sensitivity of that particular subject.
