Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center scientists have developed a new method of shrinking cancer tumors in animals by using radiation to help cancer drugs target tumors instead of the entire body. The results, said Dr. Dennis Hallahan, professor and chair of radiation oncology at VICC, could have particular benefits for head and neck cancer, lung cancer and cervical cancer.
The results were reported in the January issue of the Journal Cancer Cell.
Hallahan said the standard care of combining chemotherapy with radiation to improve anti-cancer effects comes with a high price.
