During the course of his sportswriting career, Fred Russell rubbed elbows with, befriended and wrote about countless people, both famous and otherwise.

On Wednesday, at the McGugin Center, Vanderbilt University and a few of those friends stopped by to say a special thank you to the 94-year-old Russell.

The university, from which Russell graduated in 1927, honored the legendary former Nashville Banner sports editor by naming the press box at its newly renovated baseball stadium after him. The friends and well-wishers did so at a meet-and-greet celebration, complete with cake and punch.
