Joseph Pulitzer, very possibly the most remarkable newspaper publisher in American history, died almost exactly 90 years ago on Oct. 29, 1911.

Those of us who fancy ourselves as old-time newspaper types look at Pulitzer as a kind of superhero. It is not only because he endowed America's first school of journalism at Columbia University or because his name was affixed to the nation's Academy Awards for Journalism
