Former Vice President Al Gore has made a lot of money and generated a lot of fame from the hysteria he has created about global warming. But does he actually buy into any of the snake oil he is selling? His own behavior clearly indicates that he doesn’t believe we are at a “tipping point” of worldwide environmental destruction.
His “do as I say, not as I do” hypocrisy is revealed in the air, where he jets about in private planes that consume massive amounts of energy to spread his bogus message of “conservation.”
It is revealed on land, where he travels in fleets of limos and SUVs to deliver speeches about the dire consequences of ignoring “man-made global warming” — and leaves the cars running throughout his entire speech in order to ensure they will be nice and cool when he exits the building and returns to his gas-guzzling vehicles.
His supposedly “green” mansion consumes electricity that dwarfs the consumption of the typical family home.
In order to complete his hypocrisy trifecta, Al Gore now may be extending his excessive consumption to the water as well! Land, sea AND air. Perhaps space will be the final frontier for Al Gore’s greatest environmental excess-capade.
In an amazing display of conspicuous consumption, even for Al Gore, he now has a 100-foot houseboat docked at Hurricane Marina in Smithville, Tenn., named “Bio-Solar One” — also known as “B.S. One.”
The boat was built for Gore by Bill Austin of Sparta, Tenn., (www.billaustinaircraft-yacht.com). According to Austin, the engines are bio-diesel fueled and Gore can expect to use about two gallons an hour to cruise Center Hill Lake. With a 500-gallon capacity Austin says Gore won’t need a refill for “two or three years,” though he admits having “no clue” about where Gore could get bio-diesel at the lake. The Hurricane Marina dock doesn’t sell it.
“This boat is going to be the Toyota Prius of the houseboat business,” Austin proclaims. “It is the most eco-friendly houseboat anywhere in the country.” Austin claims that the “Bio-Solar One” will create 40-50 percent less carbon emission and use half the fuel of other similar houseboats. “Gore will consume a lot more fuel driving to and from the lake than he will ever use cruising on this houseboat,” Austin asserts.
The solar panels have not been installed but are expected to be in place “soon,” says Austin. When the solar panels are installed the Gore boat could power itself and “most of the dock” according to Austin. Currently, however Gore is plugged into the dock as his primary power source.
Gore made optimistic claims about the environmental benefits of the solar panels and other “green” additions he made to his 10,000 square foot home in Belle Meade. The promised environmental savings failed to produce the results that he touted. In fact, his “energy efficient” renovations actually increased his electrical consumption by 10 percent.
Ultimately, Gore’s water-based excursions on his giant houseboat may prove more environmentally friendly than his fleet of limos, his private jets or his mansion. Perhaps the “B.S. One” will never live up to its nickname, but the jet ski he has perched on the back of his boat is neither solar nor or bio-diesel. Maybe Al is buying carbon credits from himself to offset that particular energy usage.

Australia is considering a 100% green energy p[owered electric ity grid. The basic details of the proposal can be found on website:www.DearKevinRudd.com.au/This proposition predates that recently put forward by Pickens and Gore by a good year.It might be worth having a good look at this site as it should send a signal to Americans and all the world that IT CAN BE DONE.
It is little short of remarkable that we have gone from the near onset of an ice age to fear of a meltdown in less than 40 years. We have no quarrel with true science. However, a valid use of the scientific method is not in this mix. We are relying on computer models. According to one of the eminent scientists studying the alleged global warming phenomenon, the models omit essential variables. Thousands of scientists, many with terminal degrees, are officially on record that the alarmists are wrong. From the Kyota Protocol of the U.N. to the apocalyptic claims of the former Veep, we easily detect an agenda driven massive boondoggle. Climate change is predominantly natural, and probably cyclic. To assert that it is man-made is quite simply not good science.James Hansen, an astrophysicist at NASA is arguably the most vocal activist/pro global warning advocate. Dr. Roy W. Spenser, a climatologist, is Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. He formerly was a senior scientist at NASA. He is author of "Climate Confusion: How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to Bad science, Pandering Politicians, and Misguided Policies That Hurt The Poor." A top meteorologist vs. an astrophysicist should make for an interesting debate.Since the best measuring instruments indicate that the earth has cooled a few tenths of a degree Celsius in recent years, maybe we should not rush to judgment. One thing missing form the ongoing debate is common sense. Why not continue REASONABLE measures to secure and use energy, including those horrible fossil fuels? At the same time investigate algae, and other possible "alternatives."Extremists and politicians--stay away!
Maybe Al Gore is full of bull, but he surely takes second place to the has-been lawyer, Steve Gill.
Green energy proposals always leave out critical minor details to make the story sound a little better than it is. If Al Gore put a 100 by 30 foot array on top of his houseboat, he might be able to power the thing close to the equivalent of having a 10 horse motor on it as long as the sun shines and he has plenty of batteries. This array probably costs about $50k. The Sea-Doo has at least 13 times that capacity of a 10 hp. motor. I would not go anywhere in that boat without the bio diesel system well oiled and maintained. I suggest going wherever you are going initially up wind and stay on the windward side of the lake. Some bio diesel is blended with real diesel and it tends, in warm climates, to get mold in it. About three years from now some lucky person might get a picture of Al towing that boat around the lake with his Sea-Doo. I support 100% the use of Al Gore's money on Al Gore's Boat. I would just like to retain the option of being practical with as much of my own money as possible. Even if Al Gore serves no other purpose than a good bad example, I support in every way his efforts to custom build and operate a hybrid boat but, I don't think he needs a $2000 energy tax credit for doing it.
I find it odd that Steve Gill, Phil Valentine, Michael Del Giorgno and other Conservative talk show host and columnists will complain about how out of touch certain politicos are (especially if they are a Democrat) but if you ever listen to there shows or read their columns, THEY ARE JUST AS OUT OF TOUCH with the real world and with the American people as the ones they complain about.
Steve, if you worked your brain as much as your mouth, you'd be genius...lol. Next you'll be telling us how bad he is because he's almost as overweight as you are.
Al Gore could reduce his carbon footprint even more. Don't own a 100 ft houseboat with a jet ski. He should reduce his luxury and recreation energy consumption.I hope Al and other "limousine liberals" make sure their tires are properly inflated.
Dragon wins, but even more to the point, what does one do with 10,000 sq ft of living space (Al's home) in the first place? I have 5 kids, ages 4 to 24, and we STILL couldn't use half that much space effectively. Someone's cooling and heating a lot of "dead" space in that mansion.
Personal attacks. Grabbing at straws for hurtful rebuttal. Never proving that what you say is incorrect. Classic moves by clueless libs.
OneTimer, it's not that we're liberal or conservative, since most of us are moderates here, but we question some of the "measuring points" of others when they show no respect for the words they emit every day of their lives.
Sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade, whether you like Steve Gill or not. Al is a pompous wind bag and full of himself. Now what's the actual size of his carbon footprint? Only his big ego knows for sure.
Steve Gill's day job, bashing Al Gore, must pay a lot more handsomely than doing real work, or investigating real information, or seeking plausible solutions. It's pretty easy to go negative, as John McCain has decided he must do. But the real proof of the pudding is in offering positive solutions to serious problems. Sadly, however, too much of the American public is gullible enough to fall for this stuff, just like Swift Boat. Whether 'global warming' is natural or man-made -- or most likely, a combination of the two -- there's no question that pollution (air, land, and water), including acid rain are real, are man-made, and are making us and the environment sick. So why not focus on ways to remedy those hazards and stop wasting time and energy on bad-mouthing others???
I think the misnomer here is that man cannot have an effect on the/his environment. It has been shown, time and time again, that man can indeed have an effect. From landfills that have seeped chemicals into ground water, studies showing the weather affect of large cities, using all the vital elements in soil to the point that they have to be replaced to grow anything, to chemicals being sprayed into the air, ground and water to chase a “pest” only to have it kill or alter a “good” species. To think that man does not have a hand in polluting, and thus altering the atmosphere, is naïve, short sighted, stupid, and dangerous. But, it is all here for us, right? So what does it matter, lets use it all up cause somehow there will be more!
Oh, and at least some of you have gone “green”, with jealousy!!!
Opinions are like the posterior orifice attached to all posteriors, everybody has one. And, believe it or not, I have my “gut feeling” opinion; now, you can not even get a cup of cheap coffee with my opinion, but it is what it is, my “gut feeling” opinion. We don’t really need to worry too much about global warming or cooling as we have experienced it because, the day after the presidential election in the United States of America, it will not matter who has won the election or who has lost the election. A certain contingent of American citizens will riot if Obama wins; the riot will be in celebration and if he looses, the riot will be retaliatory. Islamic Terrorist Cells that are in place in every state in the U.S.A. because of open borders will set off their dirty bombs in major cities across America. Israel will attack Iran and attempt to knock out their nuclear capabilities, then all Hell is going to break loose. Iran’s allies, Russia, Communist China, Communist North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela will attack Israel and the United States and even possibly Great Britain.By the middle of January, 2009 we are going to be embroiled in a third world war, and folks, It “ain’t gonna” be pretty. As I said, this is my “gut feeling” and I hope like hell I am wrong in my feelings!
You know, I have had discussions about theories like that, and others with variations including the rioters being the “extreme right” and starting another civil war. There is no doubt that this will be an election to watch, and the outcome, no matter who wins, will change the course of this country, some for the same reasons, such as immigration, and some for different reasons, such as military presence. I too hope yours, mine and others, dire predictions fall far short and that we will unite as one behind the winner and make this country stronger, both internally and abroad. Here is to hope!
robertmack, though your opinion is respected, I disagree with your half-empty notion that all hell is going to break loose if Obama loses.
To revo-lou, my fellow opinion/poster board member. It seems our two person sabbatical has ended, and we must resume jousting. Not surprisingly, semantics appear to form the taproot of our controversy. I believe there is a distinction, with a difference between climate change, and affecting the ecosystem. Mankind has indeed polluted air, field, and stream. Effluents from various industries have devastated ground-waters and waterways alike. Toxic gasses have been discharged into the air, and settled over cities and beyond. To extrapolate from the above, marked global changes in temperatures, and cataclysmic events appears unwarranted. True, volcanic ash in sufficient quantities, driven by the winds can result in temporary, widespread, observable alterations in climatic conditions. Does this necessarily prove that carbon emissions from animals, humans, and fossil fuels result in melting ice caps? We answer, "No." Should we take reasonable steps as stated in my above post? "Yes." We are not together on this matter, but we are not too far apart. You know as nature abhors a vacuum, we humans loathe equilibrium. After all, if the pendulum stops, so does the clock. Applied to discussions, healthy, spirited debate can be, and often is a good thing. Let's just avoid the knock-down,drag-outs. Thanks
First of all, it is unfortunate the Mr. Gill simply refuses to believe the science of global warming. The world's top scientists confirm that human induced warming is real, it is caused by human activity, and it will simply get worse if we fail to take steps to address it. Instead, he chooses to attack the messenger, former Vice President Gore. Now, the facts about the houseboat. It runs on biodiesel. As reported by News 2, the Gores will refuel the boat in Cookeville once a year. The solar panels will be installed by the weekend and anyone who has been to the dock (including News 2) has watched the installation. When the Gores aren't using the boat, it will actually feed renewable power back into the marina. Finally, the Gores' home uses solar power, geothermal power and green power through the Green Power Switch program offered by the local utility (as reported by The Tennessean and AP). Seems to me that Steve Gill isn't a very credible source of information and its a shame that the Nashville City Paper didn't seek out opinions from anyone that might have the facts.
If Girlie Girl is a 'moderate', I'm Santa Claus AND the Easter Bunny.Gill's columns vary from almost sensible (dealing with corporate welfare and government waste) to nonsensical partisan name calling thinly disguised as journalism. This column falls into the latter category.
bna – I think we can continue our respectable debate, as I am not a scientist, nor do I play one on TV. (Can’t help that, it s just part of my persona). I can’t prove with my limited ability that mankind is indeed FULLY responsible for global warming, and in truth, I don’t think that he is. But, my “observations” of my own very unscientific study, and the review of others reports, seem to lend credence that we do have a strong influence to “alter” even the climate as an entity. As you pointed out, a volcano can and does affect weather patterns hundreds or even thousands of miles away from its eruption point. If 1000 volcanoes went off at the same time, we would have some serious problems. Correlate that to a thousand cities, and multiple “lava” runs between them, and maybe we have the same, or some type of, affect to the climate. But, even at a minimum, cleaner energy sources, the reuse and/or recycle of existing “products”, and a reduction of the procurement of raw elements, is a very important issue, and a good side effect of a conscious effort towards going “green”.
I wonder why it is that none of the scientist who have proven the idea that man has caused global warming has been nominated for the Nobel Prize? If nothing else, they should at least try to go after the $500,000 prize offered by Steve Miloy.
Strange that nothing is said beyond a casual mention about his OTHER THREE HOUSES. So 2 people have the equivalent of 5 houses and the one we know about is a power monster.AlGore is the PT Barnum of our day. Anyone with any intelligence isn't buying that a .07 fluctuation in tempature over 100 years is caused by us and going to burn us up, especially when there were hotter temperatures before the car was even invented.

I will recommend not to hold off until you get big sum of cash to buy different goods! You should just get the mortgage loans or just small business loan and feel yourself free
