The Backpage: A letter to the editor

An anonymous letter to the editor received by 'The City Paper.'

We don’t print a lot of mail here at The City Paper, mainly for reasons of space. But the following piece of anonymous correspondence arrived this week, and well, you just have to read it. It’s a response to our July 30 cover story on Samar Ali and those in the tea party who are zealous about preventing what they perceive to be a Shariah camel trying to get its nose under our Tennessee tent.

While crazy letters have been sent to newspapers for as long as there have been editors, I think this one gets to a special level of ignorance about Muslims that exists in post-9/11 America. There’s an argument to be made not to publish bile like this, that you should never give hate a platform. But I would argue that letters like the one on this page should get a little light every now and then, because as Judge Louis Brandeis wrote, “Sunshine is said to be the best of disinfectants.” He was writing about financial disclosure, but it’s a pretty powerful tool against ignorance as well.

—Steve Cavendish, Editor

Reply to your July 30 edition (The City Paper, Vol 13 #31)

What are we so afraid of? Gee, how about having acid thrown in the faces of our daughters because their [sic] going to school!

OR how about getting our heads chopped off for refusing to be Muslims, as the 109! Versus [sic] in the Koran exhort the faithfull [sic] to do, in order to follow the teachings of Muhammed (the Father of Terrorists) (and also the husband of a 9 yr old girl!)

How about putting out an edition with the 109 “kill the infidel” verses reprinted.

Ali says “I know of no true religion that celebrates the loss of lifes [sic].” Oh yeah you lying raghead b****! Where do you think “SMITE THE INFIDEL” came from? Could it be those [sic] 109 verses from the Quran? This deceitfull raghead b**** says “they claim to be fundamentalist muslims (but) they are no religion at all.”

Is that why muslims on the street say to each other “First comes Saturday (kill the Jews), then comes Sunday (kill the Christians).” How about an artical [sic] about this particular Muslim saying?

You liberals are not only nieve [sic], I really believe you suffer from a mental desiease [sic]! You write B.S. like this article while thousands of your countrymen have been killed or crippled by these raghead psychopaths! You sit smug & comfortably secure smotting [sic] on your key boards grinding out progressive crap you can’t sell but have to give it away because no one would pay $ to buy it!

“What are they afraid of” you ask? How about counting up all the Jews and Christians that have been murdered, maimed or crippeled for life by your raghead buddies in the middel [sic] east. When I see your rag by the mail-boxes in my building I’m gonna throw ’em in the trash can from now on.

Mohammed was a mass murderer & a pedophile! Allah is an a******! You liberal s*** sacks!

P.S. The City Paper is not a paper stupid! It’s a magazine

Editor's note: Throwing away copies of a publication in an attempt to keep others from reading it is a violation of the First Amendment. Being filled with hate or bigotry or xenophobia is not illegal, but it's not very good, either.

Who let this person out of the loony bin?! Scary stuff! Sadly though, there are probably a lot more like them in this backward state...

By: WickedTribe on 8/13/12 at 7:14

I didn't realize this destruction of free papers was so common, but first it was Out & About and now it's the City Paper. Soon everything "free" will have to have a money box and a sign saying only the first copy is free and each additional copy is 50 cents, so the police will be willing to act when someone "steals" them.

To those who want to rant against the letter writer for their "ignorance", please tell me what country on earth which has a significant muslim population or is muslim-dominated is worth living in? Some few are fantastically wealthy because of the oil resources which westerners developed for them, but most are violent, impoverished hell holes. The clear and undeniable evidence of what islam brings with it is all around the world and plain to see. It's been that way for 1400 years, but these "oh-so-tolerant" people are too stupid to get it.

By: dargent7 on 8/13/12 at 12:53

FaceBook:E is correct.
All the Middle Eastern countries offer is government suppression, dictators, sand, desert, sand storms, and polluted lakes, streams, and rivers.
They come here to partake of our freedoms. Free of charge. They think we're stupid, which we are. GW Bush...two terms? Insane.
Then try to dominate us with their b.s. they ran from.
Muslims wouldn't know The Bill of Rights if they were force fed.
They kill their own children, calling it a, "honor killing".
Not a soul came out to denounce the 9/11 World Trade bombings. Or the 1991 WTC bombings before that.
No imam, clerik, sheik, speaks out about the suicide bombings, killings. To them it's a religious "jihad". Well, take that jihad and stick it.
Islam is a religion of peace? Ha!' Read the Qu'ran...all of it.
America didn't fully wake up after 9/11.
Maybe one more gigantic explosion will wake the USA UP!

The words of an uneaducated hill billy and a coward for not signing his or her name.

By: Ask01 on 8/14/12 at 3:52

Captain Nemo, I'm not certain this feculent individual can even spell their own name.

The other possibility is the letter was signed, but the stray small 'x' at the bottom of the page overlooked.

I don't suppose this knuckledragger would care to comment on some quaint Christian happenings such as, say, the Inquisition, the Witch Trials, the Crusades, or perhaps, how the so called Dark Ages were the result of the all powerful Church declaring all science heresy?

I guess there is some truth in what I've heard regarding ignorance; what good is it if you can't show it off in public?

I wonder if the building he refers to is the one in which he scrubs toilets?

By: FaceBook:Emmett... on 8/14/12 at 6:53

scavendish - That is fair. Turkey has so far avoided the extreme outcomes. It has always been a more secular and seemingly more heterogeneous country culturally with the desire to identify more with Europe than with the Middle East. I believe the time will come when Turkey will fall, too, though. In my lifetime, Lebanon was known as "The Jewel of the Middle East" - peaceful, prosperous and a desirable vacation destination. Now, it is a hellish place. Many parts of Europe are also uninhabitable by westerners anymore, too. Those are existing facts - realities - which only the most foolish or ignorant can try to deny.

The letter has the grammatical markings and idiotic rantings of yogi.

By: yogiman on 8/15/12 at 3:51

I hope you wake up one day, IdiotSmackDown, and learn what the hell is going on in the USA today.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama is a Muslin of the Islamic religion and a communist in politics. If he isn't, when did he change?

By: Captain Nemo on 8/15/12 at 6:29

SmackDown yogiman is Gordonville, TN villeage idiot.

By: gdiafante on 8/16/12 at 5:03

The letter is disgusting but I fear that is a much more common attitude than not. Misinformation and ignorance are rampant in this country. Just look at yogi's 4:51 post.

The only reason the fringe have a voice is the internet. As usual, those who can, will pervert a good thing. Don't believe me? Look at organized religion.

I weep for this country.

If you don't believe Nemo's 7:29 comment, just visit & mention Paul Wade by name. You will not get a positive reply or attitude.

By: Loner on 8/16/12 at 5:22

Good morning, Nashville.

Is there any doubt that Holy Wars Suck? The "author" of this crude missive has obviously been listening to right-wing and Christian radio...just last week, on the Jimmy Swaggart Network, I heard a preacher use the term, "Islamic infestation". I immediately thought of the hateful screeds by Joseph Goebbels.

If we remove the words "Muslim" and "Islam" and substitute "Jew" and "Judaism" in their place, the LTE is almost identical to Nazi propaganda from the 30's....except for the poor grammar and the misspellings.

The Great Crusades lasted for 300 years, the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. The goal then was to get the Muslims and the Jews out of Palestine. Nowadays, the Jews and the Christians are united against the Muslims..

Today's holy wars began on May 15, 1948. The main antagonist in the modern effort to "liberate Palestine" is the Jewish state; with the help of Christian nations, like the USA..

Unlike the great theocratic wars of the past, this time around we could destroy civilization itself....a nuclear exchange between faith-based societies is a growing likelihood.

I would not have published this LTE....whoever wrote it has been encouraged to take it up a notch....this nut-job may well own an arsenal of weapons...and obviously, he has his supporters and soul mates.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 5:30

gdiafante,

I believe we weep for this country for different reasons and they are, each, personal reasons. Mine is to have a person in the White House as our President legally. You don't seem to care if he's in there legally or not.

You're old enough, but obviously don't have the intelligence to see what is happening to this nation today and to back someone in the Oval Office who refuses to identify himself, you're going to get what you deserve.

I feel sorry for your children and their future.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 5:35

Isn't it funny, bfra, that dargent7 and I are the only two on this site that don't mind being personally identified?

Aren't he rest of you apparently showing fear, or shame, because you simply don't want anyone to know who's making such idiotic remarks.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 5:41

Correct me if I'm wrong, Loner, but I've never heard of Jews thinking you should be killed if you don't become a Jew.

Yet I've read several articles in my life that the people of the Islam faith think you should be killed if you don't become a Muslim.

Why is the Muslim faith trying to take over the world in their religion today?

By: Loner on 8/16/12 at 5:46

The author lives in what he calls, "my building"....probably a renter on public assistance? Lacking education and verbal skills, the writer of this awful letter is probably destitute....and he blames the Muslims for his personal shortcomings. Warped minds with too much time on their hands write hateful letters such as this one...society would be bettor off with jerks like that breaking rocks in the hot sun.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 6:01

Or possibly making the errors to "fool" the readers so he won't become identified?

By: IdiotSmackDown on 8/16/12 at 6:56

yogi, only an idiot comes into a public forum such as this and displays their name and address. If you don't understand why, you truly are an idiot. It has nothing to do with fear but everything to do with common sense, in which you are lacking.

Emmett, Turkey.

Scavendish, I have a friend here in the US from Turkey. She, her mother (a doctor) and her 12-year old brother converted from Muslim to Christian. Her father had her 12-year old brother killed; her mother was brutally beaten and is in hiding in Turkey. And she is in the U.S. with a changed name and in hiding. That is all I know about Turkey's muslim community.

If anyone actually reads the Koran, they'd see why level minded people don't trust muslims.

Loner, bfra, why don't you all become muslims if you think they are so great? Or better yet, sneak into mexico, get illegal jobs and become muslims all at once? Of course I'm just being sarcastic.

To me, the lettere should not have been printed. It is too hate filled and has too many grammatical errors. I hope the City Paper uses better judgment next time.

Not liking or agreeing with the muslim doctrine does not make people haters. It just makes them doubters.

By: govskeptic on 8/16/12 at 7:00

The letter is about as legitimate and no more of a foolish rant than the
unofficial editorials published every Friday by your own Michael Burch!

By: budlight on 8/16/12 at 7:01

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 6:41
Correct me if I'm wrong, Loner, but I've never heard of Jews thinking you should be killed if you don't become a Jew.

Yogi, when you write common sense statements like that, here is how it comes across to Loner, bfra and those people:

*****77777&&&&&))))))jjjj33333$$$$$@@@@

It cannot be translated in their language or their way of thinking. It is too logical.

Of course you are correct. The Koran does state in plain language to "kill infidels" and muslims consider Jews and Christians to be infidels.

Idiot, Yogi did not display his name. I believe someone unethical person did that for him. They also put in his address.

I know a couple of these people's real names, but I would not print them. They are always tellling me my neighbors hate me. But interestingly when I show my neighbors what they write, my neighbors laugh -- AT THEM!

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 7:09

Ask [dumba$$] Captain Nemo, why he idiotically gave my name, address and phone number on this site.

I'm sure he has a good answer.

Leave it to bud, she knows someone, met someone, saw someone, with someone being probably a figment of her imagination, to cover any & all issues.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 7:15

Well, IdiotSmackDown,

Let's see who the idiots are in November, OK?

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 7:20

bfra,

I'll admit, I envy the hell out of you. I wish I had the intelligence you seem to think you have. But then, I'll also have to envy many of the others on this site.

You all seem to know everything but the facts on an issue. And none of you have read any reference I've made on the man going by the name Barack Obama.

If you have, you've sure kept in to yourselves because you can't admit you was in error.

Leave it to bfra, who knows no one, met no one, saw no one, and definitely is not with someone because NO ONE would want to be near the bfra "IT"!

I just gave an example. Of course, only intelligent people know what an example is, so I don't expect you to understand.

Yogi, I'm glad that you and I don't have thin skin like bfra and the ilk! They get so offended and then they post their hogwash! If they can't run us down, their day is shot. Keep up the good work Yogi. They need us to make themselves feel superior and better.

Awww! Poor little things! They just have to run down others. It makes them feel so good. Glad I could help, bfra. I know you are disadvantaged, otherwise! And probably disenfranchised also. I bet you are also illegal. Yeah, that makes sense!

By: Loner on 8/16/12 at 7:30

I said my piece on this topic...now, it's time for the lone one to get back into the DJ5-L and drive down to Brushwood Folklore Center...it's a 160 mile trip, that's a lot for a 1981 Postal Jeep with an old hippie biker at the wheel....the Commander Cody band is scheduled to play in Sherman, NY, near my campsite, tomorrow night....and Hawkfest is coming up...drumming, dancing, campfires, partying..."Responsible Hedonism", that is what I call it...it's my faith....and Loner is keeping the faith.

I gotta leave now....I'll be back in two weeks...enjoy the Loner-free Comment Boards.....Party On!

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 8:02

You make me jealous, Loner. I wish I could get back on my old BMW and "hit the road", but "them days" are gone and ain't coming back.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 8:05

budlight,

It seems the only thing these posters can come up with is negative remarks. They can't seem to come with any facts and won't accept any that's offered because they can't understand them.

By: Rasputin72 on 8/16/12 at 8:58

Having worked at a major newspaper as a flunky during college I got to see a lot and I mean a lot of coo-coo letters sent to the newspaper as far back as the 60's. None of course were published.

My first thought upon reading this article and the published paper was why did the CITY PAPER decide to publish this particular coo-coo letter. There was a reason and it was perhaps as coo-coo as the letter itself.

By: jvh2b on 8/16/12 at 9:23

I feel it safe to say that the City Paper published this to put a glaring spotlight on the sheer insanity of the letter...

Their biggest mistake was assuming their readers have a high enough IQ to understand it's foolishness. Instead we get the collective rantings of morons supporting the letter.

While they think they are winning this made up 'war' based on assumption of a vocal minoirty of a religion...history says otherwise...it is their ilk that is dying....rapidly. Thus all the yelling and gnashing of teeth to make it look like they are somehow signifigant still.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 9:25

It is rare that a newspaper would print an anonymously signed letter. The only reason I can think of is a situation where they felt the letter was appropriate and the writer should be protected if they actually signed the letter.

You know, this brings up an interesting point. I've talked to a lot of anti-gay marriage conservatives who readily admit that gay marriage will be likely be legal across this country within a decade or so (if not sooner). But when asked why they are pushing back so adamantly against something that even they see as inevitable, they have no real answer..... other than the usual Biblical BS. Seems irrational to me.... as well as juvenile and hateful to boot.

By: pswindle on 8/16/12 at 11:20

This state has lost its way. This is the thinking of a lot of people including the Tea Party. They should focus their angry toward Bush/Cheney. They knew something evil was coming, but they sat back and let it happen. I still have an image of Bush on the aircraft and it makes me so sad that we had a president that was so much out of touch. He was the one that started the downf all of America, and President Obama is slowing but surely sbringing it back.

By: yogiman on 8/16/12 at 12:14

Gimme a break, pswindle. You must be a dumbocrat to blame it all on Bush and Cheney. How about taking it on back to Billy boy Clinton who refused to take any action on knowledge before the 9/11 attack.

Clinton also got the budget "back in order" by reducing the number of men in service. Who was in office when the National Guard began to be called into service to be assigned overseas when their identity was "National Guard"?

You must be so young you don't remember when the National Guard was just that, to protect this nation if it was attacked, not to go into service overseas.

And now your boy Barry is working his way to eliminate our military. You don't remember him talking about building his own army... just like Hitler did?

You guys better wake up unless you're fellow communists with Barry.

Letter to the Editor

Tennessee seems to have kept its well-qualified role as the Volunteer State. Gov. Bredesen signed into law on May 27 Public Chapter 983, which included the HB-3768 and SB-3740. Both branches voted yes for each of these branch bills with “no” votes and only one not voting in each branch.
This bill denies the Sharia Law from being recognized in Tennessee courts. The Sharia Law is referred to as "Islamic Law."
Islamic laws have been accepted by several nations in Europe, and some were looking forward for it to be accepted in the United States.
Hopefully, the Tennessee legislature has set a great example for the rest of the states of our union to deny foreign law in our courts.
The Volunteer State has once again volunteered to lead the way.
