Burch: Solvable problems

Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 10:05pm
By Michael R. Burch

The death of Osama bin Laden and the popular democratic movement now being called the “Arab Spring” may offer us glimmers of hopeful light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel. If Nashvillians are tired of war, just imagine how the people of Afghanistan and Iraq must feel. Since the vast majority of earth’s people of all races and creeds want peace rather than war, it seems time to ask: “Where do we go from here?”

While many Nashvillians probably believe that our problems in the Middle East are unsolvable, I disagree. I think we are closer to peace in the region than we realize, if only our government will do something it has never done before: take a firm stand for equal rights, justice and democracy where it matters the most. Ironically, what our government must do if we want peace is persuade the government of Israel to do what we did here in the South not so very long ago: abandon Jim Crow laws and treat everyone as equals in the eyes of the law. If we can persuade Israel to become a true democracy with fair, nonracist laws and courts, we should soon see results similar to what happened here after we made the practice of racism illegal.

And we need to remember that American leaders like Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln were convinced that blacks and whites could never live together in peace. Jefferson owned slaves until his death, while Lincoln planned to have slaves deported once they were freed. But they were both wrong. Once we finally ended Jim Crow laws, we soon discovered that all races could live together in peace.

Today Israel’s leaders insist that Jews must have the upper hand and be allowed to practice apartheid and ethnic cleansing because Palestinians are “the problem.” But that’s what Nazis once said about the Jews. It’s also what American white supremacists once said about blacks and Native Americans. But the Aryan and American supremacists were wrong. So are the present-day leaders of Israel. We need them to see the light, or be replaced, so that we can live in peace ourselves. As long as the U.S. pours billions of dollars in financial aid and advanced weapons into Israel — while Israel continues to deny Palestinians basic human rights and justice — we will always find ourselves in the bull’s-eye of men who want to defend their women and children from such unconscionable abuses.

Osama bin Laden cited the plight of Palestinian women and children as being his main motive for the 9-11 attacks. I think Americans must turn the tables on the extremists by persuading Israel that none of us can afford the terrible consequences of causing women and children to suffer so grievously. If we will not correct our mistakes out of love, compassion and a sense of justice, still we must act for purposes of self-preservation and to give our children and grandchildren a chance to live in peace.

FYI

The first post is logical and the second post…well I will leave it others to decide. Personally I found it entertainingly sad.

brrrk is spot on here. If you can type and you skip most of the yogi and budlight posts you can carry on with the conversation here without interrupting your work. Agree too that the value added in IT doesn't come from pounding but instead creativity and innovation often happening outside the workplace.

BenDover,

Does my interpretation on 1:41 your post mean I can keep the door open on the Obama illegality issue?

By: BenDover on 5/13/11 at 9:02

Geeezzz... I don't have the energy. I would encourage everyone to read the history (just the facts) and decide for yourself how this should be solved. The Palestinians have thwarted peace in this matter at every stage because their radical leadership knows it becomes irrelevant under a two state solution where it needs to admit the legitimacy of Israel while it's spent the last 50 years demonizing Israel to it's population. The population has grown up there in a Hatfield and McCoy battle knowing only that the other side and the Evil Satan, the USA, is to be annihilated before they will have the good life. The good life is a matter of attitude though and social and cultural mores and traditions that will necessitate their leaders find another scapegoat to blame even if they were to drive the evil pigs in Israel into the sea.

gdiafante,

Since I have been noted several times to look up an article in 'google', or have other sites recommended, may I suggest you go to "bing" and type in "citizenship laws of 1961".

By: house_of_pain on 5/13/11 at 9:17

Ben, I'll have you know that the Hatfields are pure evil.

By: yogiman on 5/13/11 at 9:22

One more point, gdiafante.

It is constantly being stated his mother is an American citizen thereby making him a "natural born" American citizen because he was born in Hawaii.

Now: let's say his father is an American citizen and his mother was a citizen of Kenya and he was born in Hawaii during her scholarship to one of the schools there. Would he be a citizen of the British Empire because his mother was a Kenyan, or would still be considered a "natural born" American citizen?

"When was the last time that the Israelis called for any of their neighbors to be wiped off the map? Conversely, how often does Israel’s radical Islamic Muslim nation neighbors demand that Israel to be wiped off the map?"

Just curious, how would you feel if all of the sudden the land that has been in your family (sometimes possibly centuries for some Palestinians) was simply handed over to some American Indian tribe because they claim original ownership based on some spurious religious claim?

I didn't see anything under that search except blogs...is this considered evidence?

By: gdiafante on 5/13/11 at 9:42

I'll post this link:

Notice what constitutes a natural born citizen. Hawaii, in 1961, was a state, therefore only the first criteria applies.

gdiafante,

I have bought and given away boxes of those pocket sized Constitution booklets. Have they been re-written?

I don't have time to read all of this item. I gotta go. I will look it over over the weekend and we will get back at the problem next week.

Hi MamaG. Burch wants all the CP readers to go to the MidEast and demand peace.
I'm going the long way in my Corvette, wanna go?

By: MamaG on 5/13/11 at 10:43

Slacker, I finished "Can't You Hear Me Callin'" and it was pretty good, actually. It did make Mr. Monroe come across as a little larger than life but, he always came across that way to me as a child anyway. I remember him putting me on one of his mules when he was plowing once and I thought I was queen of the tater patch or something! Ha!!

By: MamaG on 5/13/11 at 10:44

Sure, I'll go with ya, slacker! Pick me up?

Yogi is still clinging to his belief that Obama was not legitimately elected POTUS.

Dargent 7 is still clinging to his belief that Osama Bin Laden concealed his reasons for attacking the US on 9-11.

Oyharawrd still clings to his belief that Israel is the promised land and today's Jews are God's Chosen People.

And Slacker is clinging to his cling peaches.

Cling on!

By: MamaG on 5/13/11 at 1:17

Oh! House, you're right! Well, Happy Halloween anyway! LOL

LOL, slacker! Yes, keep the beer covered. We can also make a new movie called, "Beer For My Camels." We could be a big hit at Sundance and Cannes, in addition to the peace prize. "I've got rings on my fingers, and bells on my toes and a bone in my nose hole..." Yes, I'm ready!

Here's an interesting piece of information....

The Republicans in the Congress slipped a little provision into their "get the gulf back to work" act that would dictate that any time someone wants to sue any of the big oil companies they must do so in the 5th Circuit Court. So then, one has to ask, "Why is this such a big deal?". Well for one thing 10 of the 16 judges in the 5th have the majority of their money tied up in the oil industry. One judge alone has over $300,000 in big oil stock. In addition, the connection between that court and the oil industry is so tight that they (the oil companies) pay for these judges to go on junkets around the world. So, what makes you think the chances are for this court to rule against the oil industry? Some people say we have the "best Democracy that money can buy".... personally I think it's the worst.

By: house_of_pain on 5/13/11 at 2:21

Sad, brrrrk, that it will probably go unchallenged.

MamaG,

Thanks for calling me a liar since you don't know me. Oh, I forgot, dumba.. has told you everything he knows about me and he thinks he knows everything.

I'm sure you've already taken the weekend off with slacker, but we can argue ( I mean debate) the issue next week. That will give time to compare the two writings. That is, the constitution and the Constitution.

By: yogiman on 5/13/11 at 3:55

gdiafante,

regarding your 9:16 post, nothing I could show you would you agree with. If it isn't like you think it just ain't so.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/13/11 at 8:03

I don’t have to tell anyone that you are a liar, yogi. You just open your mouth and everyone knows.

By: yogiman on 5/14/11 at 9:58

gdiafante,

I have looked into that site you mentioned. It is not a profile of the Constitution. It is simply statements made by a group of individuals on their personal interpretaiton of the Constitution (obviously, I have one, too).

I posted a question to identify "natural born citizen". I wondered about the education of the person who made the reply as one of the programmers. When did the capitalization of our English language become null and void? Only when you are using it on the internet?

There is no definition of "natural born" in our Constituion. Congress never considered it. Nor did Congress accept English as our official language even though at one point a person taking a citizenship test had to take it in English. Just wondering; how many languages are they giving it now?

I am looking deeper into our disagreement. There will be more later.

By: yogiman on 5/14/11 at 11:25

The post I made to the Webmaster to receive the above post was: Much is being debated about the difinition of "natural born" citizen. Different definitions have been placed.

In one debate it was determined both parents must be American citizens and the child to be born in the USA.

In another it was only determined both parents must be American citizens.

In another it was determined only one parent must be an American citizen and child being born in the USA.

In another it was determined you only had to be born in the USA.

My question: What is officially a natural born citizen of the USA?

By: Captain Nemo on 5/15/11 at 6:18

What ever the definition is old yogi want except it unless it says Obama was born in Kenya.

By: yogiman on 5/15/11 at 6:45

dumba..,

You cannot name one post where I insisted Obama was born in Kenya. Actually, no one knows where he was born. On.yu a person with your lack of mentality would accept a person in the highest office of this naiton.

You may claim its because he is the first black 'president' of our nation. I claim he is the fourth white president of out nation. He is a liar and fake in that office.

Why should anyone believe he was born in the US when he is using a false SSN and shows a fake birth certificate, only after letting an honored service man serve in prison for questioning him by asking proof of his eligibility to hold that office.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/15/11 at 6:56

Dumb-ass it does matter you area a racist.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/15/11 at 7:02

So far you have not proven any of your assertion of him not being American born. The only things you have shown is your hate of his color, by focusing on his father, so why don’t you just be honest and say you are a racist.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/15/11 at 7:59

By: yogiman on 5/15/11 at 7:45

You may claim its because he is the first black 'president' of our nation. I claim he is the fourth white president of out nation. He is a liar and fake in that office.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Once again you show your lack of historic knowledge. James Madison was the fourth President and not Obama.

By: yogiman on 5/15/11 at 11:27

dumba..,

I'm sorry for your intellectually biased opinions and comments.

Facts, regardless of what you think, I do not hate Barack Obama (if that is his legal name) because of his race. I resent him because he is such a liar and thief in his attemp to force our nation into communism through its bankruptcy.

Its quite apparent he is simply destroying our nation economically, militarily, constitutionally, socailly and culturally

Its a shame you can't see beyond your nose on this situation. Simply asked, do you love the man simply because his skin is black (in your 7:45 post you intrigued James Madison was the first black president of our nation)? Then, do you love him because you think he is doing a great job bankrupting our nation?

He has already placed us under social government by taking over private industries (and congress allowed him to do it) and his ultimate goal is communist.

I want to live in the the nation known as the "good old USA" until my death, then you guys can have it.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/15/11 at 12:56

Your certainly are sorry, yogi.

Birther = Racist.

By: yogiman on 5/15/11 at 1:32

Speak for yourself, dumba...

By: yogiman on 5/15/11 at 1:51

dumba..,

It is pretty obvious to me you are right in line with Barry Soetoro, a k a Barack Hussein Obama in subjecting our nation into communism.

If you want a government to tell you how to live every point in your life like a parent, hell, go to one of the communist nations of today. You could easily pick China. But they don't let you "grow up" and mature in a communist nation.

After all, you wouldn't have to worry about what you wanted to buy over there since our government has sold us out to them on just about everything that used to be "made in America". I'm sure they would love to have you.

A simply question: Just what do you actually know about this man except that says he is Barack Obama?

I don't mean what you have heard him say. I mean; how deep have you looked into the situation?

Love him if you want, but friends have also became an enemies.
