Burch: Strut with a slut

Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 9:54pm
By Michael R. Burch

SlutWalk is coming to Nashville. Will the Bible Belt ever be the same? Hopefully not.

John F. Kennedy once said in solidarity with East German victims of Soviet-style repression, “Ich bin ein Berliner!” So I would like to say, in solidarity with victims of sexism and chauvinism the world over, “I am a slut!” (Although I must admit that my attempts at promiscuity vastly outweigh my successes; at the smorgasbord of sex, my eyes have always been bigger than my “fork.”)

One of my favorite protest signs of all time was wielded by a beautiful lesbian. It asked, “Do you call me a ‘slut’ because you’re mad that I get more p---y than you?” Ouch! The truth really does hurt. But should I allow my failures and her success to turn me into a party pooper? I don’t call Hank Aaron names because he hit more home runs than I did. So why should I call someone a “slut” just because she has more orgasms?

SlutWalk has a Facebook page dedicated to Nashville and will hold its first walk here Oct. 2 in Centennial Park. The organization describes its mission forthrightly: “SlutWalk has become a worldwide movement, working to challenge mindsets and stereotypes of victim-blaming and slut-shaming.”

I love the wit, irony and sarcasm of “slut-shaming.” More than obviously, the average male chauvinist qualifies as a “slut,” if by “slut” we mean someone willing to have sex with multiple partners. When I was a teenager, all the boys were “sluts,” with many well-crafted plans (or, more accurately, highly implausible fantasies) to make ourselves freely available for sex with all sorts of attractive partners. If the girls turned us down, they were “frigid.” If they accepted our advances, they were “sluts.” Talk about a Catch-22 proposition. Shelley Maddox of SlutWalk Nashville calls this the “virgin/whore dichotomy.”

And if we’re willing to be totally honest, not much changes as men get older. Even the most chauvinistic preachers of the so-called “Moral Majority” routinely get caught with their pants down — if not with women, with other men. (As Mark Twain once pointed out, any red-blooded man will set aside any hope of heaven to be with the Eve of his dreams for a few moments of earthly bliss.) Of course the randy preachers insist that they’ll be forgiven by grace, while prostitutes and GLBTs go to hell. But Jesus Christ saved nearly all his criticism for hypocritical moralists and said that the prostitutes would enter the kingdom of heaven before the self-righteous. I have absolutely no doubt that I would be much happier in the heavenly company of fun-loving “sluts” than in the hellish environs of hypocritical moralizing busybodies.

Here in the Bible Belt, people can legally sell guns, but not sex. Does that make any sense whatsoever? Why not be honest about human sexuality and stop damning prostitutes while we’re at it? If they can make money by making other people happy, how is that a crime?

But in any case, there’s no reason to suggest that rape and sexual abuse victims are responsible for what happens to them. Millions of men go to beaches and mingle with girls and women in bikinis, so it makes no sense to say that short skirts are too “provocative.” Everyone flirts with someone else from time to time, so it makes no sense to say that rape victims “had it coming.” It’s past time to stop acting as if there’s something wrong with women who have more sex than the rest of us; do men have “orgasm envy”?

Tennessee will become liberal with it's attitudes toward sex and sexuality as soon as it legalizes marijuana. Not a day before.

Slut walk?

Lady GarGoyle's coming to town?

No one tells me anything.

Oh! Did anyone else see Barack Hussein Obama's "I have a SCREAM!" speech last night?

I live-blogged and made nice bullet points...

*Al Sharpton just asked if there were enough Labor and Civil Rights groups on the ground to recall Republicans who oppose BHO. I’m leaving MSNBC now.

*“The erosion of high expectations is happening because you don’t agree with ME! “

*“Jobs, jobs, jobs, … my bill … PASS IT NOW BITCHES! “

*Plays the ‘jealous of China’ card. He’s gonna really feel like a chump when they get to the Moon, and we can’t get out of LEO.

*Every job he’s detailed has been a UNION worker’s job.

*Unemployment extended for another year. Why should a moocher work?

*Paid for by more cuts? MASTERSTROKE! He can now blame the additional cuts on evil Republicans, assuring his re-election.

*Dems bobbing like Monica Lewinsky.

*Ugffh. Speaking of Monica, there’s Hillary.

*OK, now he’s going full-on Dirty Socialist. Hurry up, there’s a pregame show to watch.

*Why wait 14 months for the next election? Resign now, things will get better. - John Galt

So. Does anyone think SCOAMF's speech will do anything to create jobs, or just send $425 more Billions down lefty rat holes, much as the $535 Billion went down the Solyndra rathole ?

"I hope readers have a sense of humor!"

Good call Mike...with this crowd, you have to explain it first.

By: gdiafante on 9/9/11 at 7:01

Womp womp womp...

For someone who said (lied) that they wouldn't watch the speech, you sure know alot about it...you should...many of the ideas put forth are Republican.

Obama is Bush III.

By: dargent7 on 9/9/11 at 7:09

I, though by accident, watched Chris Mathews interview Ron Reagan, Jr.
Ron nailed it: ALL the Republicans care about and are focused on is taking back the W.H. in 2012.
No way do they want Obama to succeed in anything, especially the economy.
If he were to succeed, he'd be a shoe-in for a 2nd term, something the GOP cannot handle or stomach.
That's the fu!!cking dynamic we have going on in Washington, ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to America.

Oh. Muslims thought Lara Logan was a Jew, obviously then a 'slut'

http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10150112468241665&id=190901221664

An account of her attack might be entered here, just as a sort of 'dichotomy', of Muslim vs. American 'slut' walkings...

......"Unfortunately I heard some eye witness accounts that suggest whoever did that was a random mob of people from the nearby slums who came out to celebrate, it was not an organized thing. Some tried to pick up a fight with her and started yelling that she was Israeli and the situation escalated very quickly. Some of the Tahrir guys tried to intervene and form a circle around her,but there were too many of the aggressors to fend off. I was told that she was verbally threatened, spat at and then had her hair pulled by a couple of the men. After that the situation just degenerated. The herd closed in on her and she was dragged deeper into the crowd. It would have been impossible to see from a distance what was going on (unless with a helicopter I suppose) as she would have been literally surrounded by hundreds of people. Apparently they began touching her body and pulling at her clothes. She tried to resist and that is why they started slapping her around.

حاولت المقاومة وهذا هو السبب في أنها بدأت الصفع لها في جميع أنحاء.

I have been around this sort of men my entire life. Their primitive mentality is, if a "white" girl is among "men" she must be a slut and she is for the taking. If she doesn't like it then she must be taught a lesson. The fact that the majority of the crowd believed her to be a jew would have aggravated the situation dramatically and I'm sure the ringleaders would have wanted everyone to see how a "scorned Western woman" deserved to be treated. Which means they would have had no "moral restraints" and would have wanted to humiliate her in any way possible.

Since she was a non-muslim, she would have been deemed a Dhimmi slave girl. In Egypt, the following Quranic instructions apply to her, which led her to getting gang-raped: Quran 33:50, 4:24, 4:34, 23-5:6, 2:223. These are only three. But I can cite lot more. There is no surprise that what happened, happened. Such precepts allow rape/adultery with slave girls. Unfortunately Lara fell under the slave category.

سقطت لسوء الحظ لارا تحت فئة العبيد.

After being slapped around, she was dragged to the floor and the mob surrounded her. At this point, her fate was doomed. Apparently she was pinned down (arms, legs held apart) and her clothes were torn away. Once naked, as you can imagine, it was a no-holds-barred "free-for-all" scenario.

I don't want to relay too much of what I've heard about the actual assault as it would be too graphic for this forum, however by focusing on some of the descriptions given by the mainstream networks you should be able to read between the lines and decipher what actually happened:

"She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating " - CBS

"Sources familiar with the situation tell us the details of Logan's assault are horrible." - CBS

"It has been reported that according to network sources she was
at first unable to speak.”" - CBS

She won't be coming back anytime soon after suffering what the network called
"serious" internal injuries in the incident. - MSNBC

"After the attack, Logan spent 7 days in the hospital." - The NYPost

Yeah. We are so mistreatful of our 'sluts' here in America.

Why aren't these 'sluts' walking against Muslims ?

"Why not be honest about human sexuality and stop damning prostitutes while we’re at it? If they can make money by making other people happy, how is that a crime?"

Good question. Michael Jordan and Chris Johnson sell their bodies for fun and get lauded, idolized and paid millions.

Why doesn't the GOP demand that the government remove the onerous regulations on prostitutes? I thought the GOP wanted entrepreneurs to succeed and be job creators? Whyare they such NANNIES, controlling the lives of supposedly free citizens?

While I have much sympathy for women who find themselves victims of the sex trade I see no reason to glorify it as an alternative lifestyle to be sanctioned by society as righteous and I hope that the vast majority of the walkers in the slut strut would agree.

To treat oneself as a piece of meat for the pleasure of men is a decision often rooted in the abuses women have suffered earlier and for which this protest aims to condemn... if I understand correctly.

I'm not a prude and in my life I have partaken of much premarital sexual pleasure with my eventual wife and others; but this swipe at people who hold to a tighter moral standard for themselves and who tout a stricter and more traditional sexual life-goals as a better alternative to the promiscuous society of today is a broad-stroke against some time-proven social mores and against a lot of good people who try to adhere to them.

By: yogiman on 9/9/11 at 10:36

Well, I must say, my computer cracked out last night so I did watch Barry Soetoro on his show and I'll have to re-admit; he's the best damned acting liar I have ever seen on TV. And I'm still amazed at how many idiots he has in love with him because he'll say anything to get you sucked up his a$$.

Be consistent. Demand that Peyton Manning stop selling his body for fun and money.
Otherwise, why don't you NANNIES keep your nose out of what other people do? Your vaunted "morality" and hatred of sex has contributed greatly to the screwed-up-ness our society today.

OMG serr8d, this is brutal. I believe that most people who are on the extreme to middle side of libral cannot comprehend this type of occurrence.

When I was younger and worked among the dogs in DC, I was propositioned quite often and could have ended up retiring before 40 if I had taken them up on their offers. I chose not to sell my body. My standard line was (and would still be today): "This body is not mine; it is on loan from God for the time that I'm on this earth and I can't sell something I don't even own. As a matter of fact, I cannot even rent it out". The man in question would just stare at me as if I were speaking Greek and he had no clue what I meant.

Then I would add: "Oh and by the way, your self esteem would be much higher if you were not out here on the prowl seeking to bed down other women when your wife or girl friend is at home waiting for you."

It's always been my contention that women are in control of what happens (most of the time) with their own bodies and in reference to adultry, we, as women need to stick by one another. If you know a man is married or otherwise in a committed relationship (or at least his partner thinks it's committed), then send him packing. Take up and stand by other women. "Sisterhood"? If we are sisters, then let's start treating each other with respect. And treat your own body with respect.

By: BenDover on 9/9/11 at 11:26

I've argued both sides of this issue, Kosh.

I in no way have 'hatred for sex' and my vaunted 'morality' is something of which should not be casually disposed. I suspect we shall have to agree to disagree about which of our views has "contributed greatly to the screwed-up-ness our society today"

I've come to believe that there's a difference between physical labor and the false intimacy of the sex trade. I'm not sure if I would go so far as to say it should be illegal but I damn sure don't want my daughter mindlessly considering it as a career alternative.

By: Kosh III on 9/9/11 at 11:37

Ben I didn't mean to direct the "hatred" bit at you personally but you have to agree that there is a LOT of that "hatred" out there. You can still find reputable theologans(yeah you Pope Ratzi) who think ANY sex is evil. We can largely thank the heretic of Hippo for much of it, though Aquinas and many others added fuel to the fire.

Why should sex be different? If we treated as casually as we treat an afternoon of touch football, we could all be much more peaceful and less aggressive.

By: yogiman on 9/9/11 at 12:23

Kosh III,

I think sex is the most personal "activity" a person can "participate" in. And of course, it helps to have a "partner" of the different sex.God gave it to the men and women in different categories for the sole purpose of keeping human beings on this earth. He threw that "pleasure" ( called a climax) into it because if you didn't think you was going to reach a climax, would you even want to wear yourself out through the excessive exercise?

By: serr8d on 9/9/11 at 12:28

Why should sex be different? If we treated as casually as we treat an afternoon of touch football, we could all be much more peaceful and less aggressive.

Is that how you share your wife, sister, daughter? Your mother?

Let's assume for a minute that you are an atheist (that's probably not a stretch). As Bacon put it (19th century philosopher who invented the scientific method, among other things) "Without God, humans are but animals". So, you are an animal, a soulless creature with little more than a swollen braincase what separates you from other primates.

Let's look at the other animals: they breed much as you would; with abandon. The strongest males dominate the tribe of females. The weaker males are with each other, or with doorknobs and salad dressing. Sex is but a quick and dirty methodology to get your rocks off.

If that's what you want, by all means.

For those of us who realize we have these 'soul' thingers, that we are created with some expectations of behavior, who have God-given morality, things are a bit different: mothers are respected, daughters cherished and protected, and a close family takes care of it's own. That family might have ties to a church, where additional help and protection might be available. A community made up of churches might be a much better place to live; a nation formed with realization that rights are God-given (read the most important founding document closely: the Declaration of Independence, the 'first' and 'best' founding document, for evidence of our Republic's direction) might just last a couple-hundred years, until something breaks down.

We are breaking down right now. The Left, and their new vassals the Democratic Party, are the Party of atheism and low, animalistic moralities. As evidenced by your comment.

So, when this Republic fails, look no further than your attitudes. And blame your (collective) self.

By: BenDover on 9/9/11 at 2:01

Oh... I looked it up and it turns out the event really has little to do with Burch's tangent rant. The point is that someone said that when a girl was raped or sexually assaulted it was her fault for dressing like a tart. Given that context... more power to them and I think the protest is certainly valid.

I often use the example when discussing other idiots who want to blame the victim; like when someone forgets to lock their car and it gets stolen and/or used in a crime.

By: jvh2b on 9/9/11 at 2:23

Serr -- the major flaw in your argument is that man can't be moral w/o God...and nothing could be further from the truth.

Morality exsited hundreds of years prior to the god of Jehovah, and will exist milenna after.

Personally, I don't need a book of Jewish fairy tales to tell me right from wrong....

By: yogiman on 9/9/11 at 2:29

Fellow arguers,

Not to change the subject, but as you all know, Sunday will be the 10th anniversary of the attack on our WTC. Of course, many people "went to their aid" immediately, but we have had young military personnel in war since then. While many of the civilians at the WTC air strike were adults, the average age of the majority of the personnel facing combat on foreign shores is 19 years. "He" (yes, we now have young women in combat zones) is short haired, tight muscled and alert. They are usually considered by many in our society only as half man, half boy. Not old enough to buy a beer but old enough to willingly die for their country (including those who ridicule them).

How about Sunday? If you don't have a TV show to watch after church, how about "rolling": the prayer wheel for our troops? That is, if we aren't under any attacks in the US at that time.

"Prayer Wheel"

'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families or the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.'

You can give many "thank you" gifts to the GIs: A personal prayer in the very best one.

By: BenDover on 9/9/11 at 3:05

"Personally, I don't need a book of Jewish fairy tales to tell me right from wrong"

And why would you refuse such a generous and inexpensive lesson? Why deny yourself the fruit of the many long forgotten lessons preserved in our religious tradition?

gdiafante,

As they say, "Discretion is the better part of valor ... especially when you're swimming among sharks!"

By: Mike Burch on 9/9/11 at 6:36

Kosh,

The GOP has a simple plan: they want to protect us from gays and prostitutes while they gaily prostitute themselves to big business and special interests!

By: Mike Burch on 9/9/11 at 6:39

If Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann come to town, they can "heal" everyone's sexual desires with a wave of their magic wands ... er, magical Bibles. But when no one is gay, who will they blames earthquakes and tornadoes on?

By: Mike Burch on 9/9/11 at 6:53

Kosh,

It seems obvious that some of the "great" Christian theologians were very confused about sex ... no doubt because they read and believed the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), which commands the stoning of girls who were raped (Deuteronomy 22), and the murder of captured mothers and their male children, with only their virgin daughters being kept alive as sex slaves (Numbers 31). Hell, the OT even teaches that fathers can sell their own daughters as sex slaves, with the option to buy them back if they don't please their new masters (Exodus 21).

Why were Paul, St. Augustine and legions of popes and Baptist preachers twisted into pretzels over sex?

They read the "infallible word of God" and didn't question where it originated. Obviously, such verses didn't originate with a loving, wise, just God. So there is no reason to believe that premarital sex is "evil" or that being gay is "evil."

Who takes their morals from men who murdered and enslaved women and children?

By: yogiman on 9/10/11 at 9:11

Consider: Ten years ago, we witnessed America crying out in the horrific event at the World Trade Center in NYC, but tomorrow the mayor of NYC is denying clergy at the memorial event.

"President" Barry Soetoro (going by the name of Barack Obama) is going to make a "speech" at the event.

Remember, this is the same "Obama" that gave a speech at Georgetown University in April 2009 and demanded the university cover their image representing the name of Jesus be covered.

Wonder what religion will he mention tomorrow?

By: Mike Burch on 9/11/11 at 3:19

Yogi,

The "clergy" helped bring about 9-11 by insisting that the US support Israel, despite its practices of apartheid and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.

Do you think Jesus would agree that completely innocent Palestinian women and children should be treated like serfs, or animals?

If not, the "clergy" should be held accountable for their failure to be honest about the Bible and its human origins. A wise, just, loving God would not have commanded racism, intolerance, slavery, ethnic cleansing and genocide.

But according to Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon, et al, that's what the God of the Bible did.

Mike

By: serr8d on 9/11/11 at 7:56

Mike Burch:

"The "clergy" helped bring about 9-11 by insisting that the US support Israel, despite its practices of apartheid and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. "

Just wanted to get that out there, in bold.

You blame America for 9/11, obviously. Guilty parties include of course the entire world's population of Jews, the American Christian 'clergy', and probably anyone who is politically opposite to you in ideology.

Who else is on your 'blame first', instead of 'Islam-based Muslim terrorists who are easily swayed to extremism by Mohammed's false "religion", which is so easily corrupted because it was written by a warrior-first who was also a child molester, for to sway ignorant minds' list, sir?

Inquiring minds want to know.

By: yogiman on 9/11/11 at 8:48

Mike,

\You can blame the Jews all you wish. How can you you find anyone guilty for defending themselves? Can you name one conflict Israel has started?

Can you deny they gave some of their land in trying to have peace? Have many days of peace have they enjoyed?

By: jvh2b on 9/11/11 at 9:51

Ben - who says I haven't read it?

Just because I read it doesn't mean I need to have drank the kool aid and start trying to tell everyone how amazing it is.

Sure, it's a good read and had some good morals, but my point remains that it didn't create morality and it is not needed to know wright from wrong.

The same could be said about any religious text.

By: yogiman on 9/11/11 at 10:32

SHB "How" many days of peace have they enjoyed?

By: Mike Burch on 9/13/11 at 4:35

serr8d,

Who was responsible for the Trail of Tears and the decimation of millions of Native Americans?

Americans who called themselves Christians.

Who was responsible for slavery, the Civil War, more than 600,000 people dead and millions maimed and/or homeless?

Americans who called themselves Christians.

Who decided that God "gave" all Palestine to the Jews, and provided Israel with hundreds of billions of dollars in financial aid and advanced weapons, which were then used to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their native land, leading to 9-11 and two terrible wars?

Americans who called themselves Christians.

Do you see a pattern? When American Christians "believe" the wrong verses in the Bible and use them to excuse ethnic cleansing and the abuse of millions of completely innocent women and children, they open a Pandora's box of horrors.

It's happened three times, and in each case the result was a catastrophe.

By: Mike Burch on 9/13/11 at 4:45

Yogi,

If someone attacks me and I never did them any harm, I can plead self defense.

If I make it known that I am going to break into my neighbor's house, steal all his property, and endanger the lives of his wife and children if they get in the way, I cannot plead self defense. If my neighbor attacks me, he has a reason.

When Israeli Jews made it clear that they were going to seize control of Palestine, rob their neighbors of their land, and treat Jewish babies like princes and princesses, while ignoring the rights of Palestinian babies, of course some of the people who were about to be robbed and denied equality chose to fight.

If someone announced that my children were going to become second- or third-class citizens here in Tennessee, should I just submit?

Palestinians merely did what ANY other people would have done, if they were faced with being turned into serfs, or being driven from their native land.

Why did Sitting Bull go on the warpath? Because he knew what white settlers were really up to. Why did some Arabs choose to fight Israel? Because they knew Israel was up to exactly the same thing: colonialism, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and genocide.

So, yes, Israel did start all the wars, when the Jews refused to accept the simple fact that the Palestinians were the majority of the population, and had lived in the region for thousands of years, while most Jews had migrated to other parts of the world.

There is no populated place on the globe where millions of people can suddenly decide to return to the land of their ancestors, after many centuries away, and take over, without starting a war.

By: Mike Burch on 9/13/11 at 4:50

Yogi,

Israel has never returned any land to Palestinians in the form of a state where they have equal rights. Gaza is a giant walled ghetto and Israel keeps women and children locked inside, like animals. The West Bank is subject to a massive military occupation that has nothing to do with Israel's security. The military is used to protect Jewish settlers while they steal land and water resources from Palestinians. Why are armed soldiers protecting the robber barons, rather than the victims?

When Israel claims to want "peace" that is obviously a lie. No one can expect to live in peace with his neighbors if he keeps stealing their land. Israel is the only nation on earth that doesn't have fixed borders. Every day the "borders" of Israel expand more and more, as Palestinians are ethnically cleansed -- a house here, a house there.

How would you feel if the women and children who were being left homeless and destitute were members of your family? Would you consider that an act of war?

By: AtticusFinch on 9/16/11 at 6:33

“Ich bin ein survivor!”

It is important to note that President Kennedy said “Ich bin ein Berliner!” not “Ich bin ein Krout!” Words like 'slut' have been wielded as weapons to make people seem less human so that it is easier to justify less than humane treatment. In war, soldiers must think of other human beings as gooks or wops or krouts in order to make murder less impossible. Same thing! If a person is a 'slut' it is easier to justify abhorent crimes. There is no such thing as a slut! That’s the point this writer totally misses… sigh… proving once again just how necessary SlutWalk Nashville is.

One of the co-founders of the SlutWalk movement, Heather Jarvis, says, "I’m not trying to persuade people to call themselves ‘sluts’ but I will work to persuade them that this word is severely damaging in how it’s used to degrade people but can be unpacked to be seen as less about you when you’re called a ‘slut’ and more about them and widespread discriminatory ideas when they hurl it at you.”

It seems this writer has his own agenda and I personally find it disgusting! Mr. Burch’s inability to have consensual sex is not at issue and is very improper in a discussion about the very serious topic of victims’ rights. And as Ben Dover points out above SlutWalk Nashville has little to do with Mr. Burch’s rant. If only Mr. Burch had taken a few minutes to visit the website for the event at www.slutwalknashville.org, perhaps he would understand that also. One of the goals of SlutWalk is to open a discussion and raise awareness that RAPE IS NOT SEX! I do hope that Mr. Burch shows up for SlutWalk Nashville, and I do hope that he walks away a little more enlightened.
