Those who favor continuing to allow illegal aliens to flood into the U.S. regularly tout our supposed need for “cheap labor” as the primary justification for ignoring our immigration laws. Unfortunately, for U.S. taxpayers this “cheap labor” is proving to be incredibly expensive.
Earlier this year, Robert Rector and his colleagues at the Heritage Foundation sought to quantify the burden that is being imposed on American taxpayers by the 12 to 17 million illegals that currently reside in this country. Rector’s research revealed that a household headed by an individual without a high school education, which included about two-thirds of the illegal alien population, costs U.S. taxpayers more than $32,000 in federal, state and local benefits. Granted, such a family would presumably pay some level of taxes, but the average of $9,000 a year paid in taxes by such families will result in a net tax burden or $22,449 per illegal alien household per year. Over the household’s lifetime that translates to a cost of $1.1 million that taxpayers must cover.
If the low-ball estimate of 12 million illegals is used as a guide that means illegals will cost U.S. taxpayers about $2.2 TRILLION over the next ten years. Many experts believe that a better estimate of the illegals population would be closer to 20 million, meaning the actual cost would be in excess of $3.5 TRILLION. Either figure makes it clear that “cheap” labor fueled by illegal aliens is anything but cheap.
When Rector and the Heritage Foundation produced their report the “let them in” lobby claimed that these figures wildly overstated the cost of the illegals. However, new data from Los Angeles County indicates that the estimated cost may actually be low!LA County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich recently announced that a new report indicates that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $35 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in the month of July, 2007.
According to the report, illegals collected nearly $20 million in welfare assistance for that month and an additional $15 million in monthly food stamp allocations. The estimated annual cost of providing those services to illegals in that single county is estimated to be $440 million.
Antonovich explained that an additional $220 million was incurred by the county for public safety and another $400 million for healthcare for these same illegals. That brings the total annual cost to taxpayers to over $1 billion a year – and that figure does not even include the skyrocketing costs of education for the illegals and their families.
The economic impact of illegal immigration pales in comparison to the human costs our nation incurs each year. Thousands of LEGAL Americans are killed each year by drunk driving illegals on our highways. Thousands more are murdered or seriously injured by illegals who commit serious crimes on our streets. At the end of the day, the costly qualitative and quantitative impact of illegal immigration on the United States is immeasurable. It should also be utterly unacceptable.
Steve Gill is a statewide radio talk host. His Web site can be found at www.gillreport.com
Each state was also given the power and as a Tennessean Gill, explain why the laws aren't enforced here.Other cities/states are enforcing the laws and even changing laws to provide more security but TN hasn't.Our law makers/enforcers do not understand the meaning of illegal.
The numbers are staggering.
It must be noted here that the "let them in" lobby is headed by George W. Bush. Conservatives continually try to paint liberals as the problem when it comes to policies regarding illegal immigration, yet the problem dates back to a Texan working overtime to keep Hispanics happy.
Who had control here? Democraps made this a santuary city and gave them drivers licences and continue to give them puplic services. As Tip O'neil said all politics are local.Yes Bush was a big problem but so are the craps that let him get away with it and helped.
Here's what's missing in the Heritage Foundation study: How much cheap labor lowers the costs of the goods and services it produces. Heritage only counts the costs of having these workers in this country, it does not calculate their impact on the cost of production.I'd like to see those figures, myself.
This picture completes the one displayed above.http://www.welaf.com/funny-picture-1127.html
How did Democrats "let him get away with it and helped"? The Texas Legislature has been in Republican control since the mid-1990s and, until last year, Republicans controlled both the U.S. Senate and House during Bush's reign.
It's just easier to blame the demo"craps".
I would gladly pay more for goods and services if we could get the illegals out of the country and quit importing so much from China. Between the two, our country is being bled dry. We built a new house some time ago and I told the contractor I wanted an American brick crew. He responded, "If you want brick on your house, you will have to have a Mexican crew. They've run all the American crews out of business by low-balling. Now they are starting to raise the prices because they know they can." So, I had a Mexican brick crew. The brick job looks great but they wasted at least 2,000 brick (estimate from the brick dealer) and left a mess that cost me hundreds of dollars to clean up. They got mortar on the shingles and windows. They broke one window and scratched others. The first thing they built out of my brick was a fire pit to cook their food! I might have saved some bucks up front but, just like the costs that Steve Gill is writing about, the bottom line was no bargain!I don't like being forced to make a decision between no brick on my house and using illegal labor. I don't appreciate the fact that most American flags are made in China! Will"Calling an illegal alien an undocumented worker is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist."
I'm a "democrap" and paid almost twice what most would pay to have a structure built because I sought and found a contractor who did not use illegals. Instead, he had a crew of rednecks who were hungover all the time, used the bathroom behind my garage, made lewd comments to every female in sight and had to be bailed out of jail on a few occassions. Nice.
HenryB, factually speaking, the so-called "let them in" lobby is and has been headed Senator Edward Kennedy and Liberals for decades. Though we may commingle, Conservatives should not be confused as Republicans. We are not one in the same. Moreover, there actually are a handful of Conservatives that remain commingled with the Democrats; but damned few.
Perhaps we should put Kennedy in charge of transporting illegals crossing the border into America. That would solve the problem. :-)
What is the deal with the City Paper's online format? Some days you can comment on letters to the editor, other days no such luck. Are they billed by the number of reader opinion boards they put online? What gives?Since this is the case, I'm responding to C.W. Clouse's letter, which misuses the word "censorship". Clouse, you seem like an involved citizen and for that I thank you even though we don't see eye to eye on some things. But please stop misusing the word "censorship". When a newspaper decides to carry one columnist and not another, that's not censorship. I don't have a column in the City Paper. Am I being censored? No. However, I agree with your sentiment. It's foolish to call for Reagan's column to be dropped just because some reader doesn't like what he has to say. If all of us simply read those opinions we agree with, we'd all be as dull and unthinking as, well, some of the regular posters here.
Fundit you are full of DemoCrap. If, as you say, you FOUND (indicating that you researched the builder got references, i.e.; Angie’s List, etc.) a builder then you would have known prior to contracting with he/she of his gangs work ethic. Nonetheless, it is the builder’s responsibility to provide sanitation services to he/her employees/sub-contractors.However, my suspicion is that you are lying, which is far more believable than your story.
HenryB, the ONLY thing that will stop the invasion of these illegals is to secure our borders, take away social services and employment. There is no valid reason whatsoever for any employer to hire an illegal.
I agree with you 100 percent, Plant.
Yes, plant, I like to take my valuable time and lie to unsuspecting dumba$Ses on the internet...FYI, this person had renovated our house when bought it from him and did a fine job. Not everyone is the idiot you make them out to be, Mr. Know-it-all.
By: HenryB on 10/4/07 Perhaps we should put Kennedy in charge of transporting illegals crossing the border into America. That would solve the problem. :-)***If he would consider taking the "Bush" and the "Plant" too, I'd be all over it.
HokeyPokey, Having illegals working here does NOT lower the price of anything. Using illegals only increases the profit margins of those who employ them. Have you noticed the price of landscaping services, new homes or even hamburgers dropping because many of the employers are now paying less per job or per hour for employees? Thought not.
Democrats....Republicans.....what difference does it make? Our country is overrun by illegal aliens and neither party has done anything meaningful to enforce the immigration laws. Now there was that crock of $#!+ legislation for amnesty, but that was really the flag of surrender. How about abolishing the INS and just use all of that money to for a $100 bounty on each illegal. Unemployed American construction workers can just go by a construction sites and make about $5,000 a week. When that source of revenue dries up they can start on restaurants, department store chains, nail salons, and contract labor employers.Wake up people. Everyone knows where to find illegal aliens. Our government, regardless of party affiliation, has no intention of enforcing the immigration laws.
You got that right, Active. Until our gov't. seriously punishes those who hire illegal aliens nothing will improve.
Theresa, you got something against capitalism? I haven't ever bought a new home, and I don't know about the price of landscaping but it's for darn sure that the price of hamburgers is dropping, dropping at a time with other prices are rising.Have you peeked into the kitchen of every restaurant you patronize? I believe you'd be surprised at how many hispanic faces you see back there. In any event, neither my personal experience nor yours answers the question of what effect cheap labor has on the prices we pay for goods and services. Dodge the question all you like, I suspect you don't have an answer except to throw them all out.
It is not totally the fault of the illegal alien that there is additional cost to them being here. If this were the wild wild west of the nineteenth century, it would not matter. No one paid much attention to Karl Marx back then. We are modifying our total social system in ways that most people can not afford to pay for it. The fraction of those who consume more than they pay in is increasing. If you figure $96,000 as the going price for an education of 12 years at $8k per year, and the only way to pay for it is the Tennessee sales tax, then everyone would be be required to buy $1.6 million dollars of goods at the retail level during their life time. I am using 6% as the sales tax because that is approximately its true efficiency after exemptions and exceptions are figured in. If you made $1.6 million dollars over 40 years you would need to get and spend a minimum of $40,000 a year of after tax money to pay off your educational debt. This assumes no inflation, so you need to plan on that going up about 3.5% every year. Some places, school spending is going up 6% per year, so even this hypothetical is not going to hold together for long. The system of borrowing/stealing from the rich to pay for the poor will eventually turn into a system where the rich will have all of the power. And why shouldn't they since they are paying for it? Importing those who can not pay their fair share only hastens the collapse of our economic system as it is currently crafted.
Hokey, that IS the best answer. "Throw them all out" They came here ILLEGALLY so throw them out. They broke our laws. It has nothing to do with capitalism. They are here ILLEGALLY. He11, they are even under-cutting their "LEGAL Immigrant" counterparts. The silent invasion is not so silent any more.

Mr. Gill--You're only off by 17 million!! There are over 30 million illegals in the U.S. That is why the situation is so urgent. Everyday brings more anchor babies and pregnant foreign nationals from across the Border.
Meat packing plants is an illegal haven. Have you noticed chuck is now the price of what sirloin was not long ago. Anyone who honestly thinks that things are cheaper because of illegal labor is self-deluded. Hamburgers are not getting cheaper neither is hamburger meat. Service prices continue to go up despite cheap labor. Nobody is going to price a service based on labor which all could get deported next week.
The price of meat has a lot to do with bio fuels another rip off. Food and fuel are competeing for the same resource.
