As Hillary Clinton continues to stretch her lead in national polls among likely Democratic Party primary voters it is becoming increasingly clear that the nomination is hers to lose – unless she makes a major mistake. In the most recent debate she may have done just that on an issue that resonates strongly with the voters: illegal immigration.
When asked about her position on a controversial proposal by New York Governor and fellow Democrat Elliot Spitzer to grant drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens Clinton expressed support, opposition and indecision about the plan…all in the space of a single answer. “Do I think this is the best thing for any governor to do?” Clinton said. “No. But do I understand the sense of real desperation, trying to get a handle on this? Remember, in New York we want to know who’s in New York. We want people to come out of the shadows. He’s making an honest effort to do it. We should have passed immigration reform.”
But the more she talked, the worse it got as she became more evasive and defensive. John Edwards noted that she gave two different answers in less than two minutes. And her spin machine exacerbated the situation by attacking moderator Tim Russert for eliciting the “yes, no, I-don’t-know” answer she provided. Then they resorted to their old standby of blaming President Bush.
The tap dance routine on the volatile issue of licenses for illegal immigrants has the potential to be particularly damaging to Hillary in 2008. A new Rasmussen Reports poll of voters in Virginia reflects the gaping disconnect between the Washington ruling elite and the voters on the issue of illegal immigration. Virginia is also a state where the demographics closely mirror other key states along with the nation itself.
The Rasmussen poll showed that eighty-two percent (82%) of Virginia voters are opposed to allowing illegal immigrants to receive a drivers’ license. Eighty-six percent (86%) say that illegal immigrants should not be allowed to receive public benefits such as rental and housing assistance. Backing up those views, 79% believe that if a police officer pulls someone over for a traffic violation, the officer should automatically check to see if that person is in the country legally. Sixty-seven percent (67%) believe that illegal aliens discovered in this manner should be deported.
Support for this aggressive approach to illegal immigrants is found across partisan and demographic lines. From an ideological perspective, 79% of conservatives believe illegal aliens discovered through a traffic violation should be deported. Forty-seven percent (47%) of liberal voters agree. The issue of drivers’ licenses for illegals could carry huge weight in general election next year and Hillary is likely to see the video of her response on the issue in attack ads. But only a candidate with credibility on the issue can raise it.
Recently, Fred Thompson released a detailed plan for dealing with illegal immigration that would crack down on employers hiring illegals, secure the border and deny any and all forms of amnesty. It is right on the mark when it comes to the views of the voters, based on the overwhelming results in the Virginia poll. He is the only one of the leading Republican candidates who could, and should, immediately take advantage of Hillary’s misstep.
Giuliani has a track record of supporting “sanctuary cities”; McCain sponsored the amnesty plan that sparked vehement outrage from the voters; Huckabee and Romney both have their own track records of being soft on illegal immigration.
Thompson has the opportunity to pounce on the issue and make it his, which would give him an advantage in both the Republican Primary as well as the general election. Granted, Thompson’s personality and style do not fit well with the image of a quick, cat-like “pounce.” So perhaps he should be more like a grizzly bear and launch a big pawed “swipe” at Hillary…with the claws out.
Steve Gill is a statewide radio talk host in Tennessee and the author
of “The Fred Factor: How Fred Thompson May Change the Face of the ’08
Election”. His website is www.gillreport.com
Why hasn't Fred done anything concrete to remove the illegals from TN?I want him to make a difference in TN first before I vote to put him in the White House. If he doesn't do it here he won't do it there. :-(
Why is Gill the only commentator that replaces the letters? He has a dog in the Thompson fight and just recycles old news.I like Fred but he isn't the one to beat Hillary. It will be hard for him to pick up independents and moderate dems and some of his votes are questionable like most favored nation status for China and the impeachment vote.He has the same problem as the dems do no administrative experience or personal achievements.
Fred's a player in this race, maybe not top ticket. We'll have to see what shakes out early next year. Giuliani might have the best chance of beating Hillary, if she doesn't beat herself...her debate performance was awful. The Real Hillary was on display...the slippery liar, without Bill's marketable charisma. That entire debate was pandering to the far left, the Nutroot BDS crowd, who view her with great ill-favor for her Iraq War vote. That small but vocal segment of Democrats (the far left KOS Kooks, the antiwar leftists, Code Pinksters, Marxists all) are overtaking the sensible Democrats (did I just say that?), and Hillary has to pander to get their love. That's why she mentioned President George Bush 27 times in her answers, and he's not even on the ballot! Here's how you know a leftist Democrat. Just ask them what they think of their co-nominee in 2000, Joe Lieberman. The leftist crowd hates him as much as they hate a tax cut...
For whatever she lacks in foreign policy and domestic policy, Hillary has the superior energy policy. Even though it is conservation based, it would save billions of gallons of jet fuel and gasoline because people would not have to move to Cuba to have their Socialist Utopia.
Ground Gore and you will save billions in fuel.Hillary has the machine, media included.
I am pulling for Edwards as I an unable to pull a lever for Hillary. 2008 just may be the year I become a conscientious objector.
BADCOPS: First, Fred does not now hold, nor has he ever held, any office in the state government; therefore, he does not have authority to do anything about illegal immigration in Tennessee right now. Second, by putting pressure on the other Gay Old Party candidates, some of whom like McCain do hold federal office, he keeps the corporate Republicans from colluding with the leftist Democrats.I note that Heath Shuler, Democrat from North Carolina, has introduced an all enforcement bill, known as the SAVE Act, that would require employer verification through a phase-in by employer size, and increase the number of border patrol officers and ICE agents by 9,000. Its the best enforcement bill yet, and its been strongly endorsed by anti-immigration groups like Numbers USA. The moderates in the Democratic Party who were elcted in 2006 and thereby gave the Dems majority status are getting tired of radical leftists from the North and the left coast like Pelosi, and may well pick immigration as the issue on which to stage a rebellion.
I believe the answer to BADCOPS question about why Fred Thompson hasn’t solved the illegal alien problem in Tennessee is simple. Although Fred Thompson does have a detailed plan, he doesn’t have the official authority to present it to the Tennessee Legislature. In fact, when we evaluate the actions in other states as well, none have introduced any feasible challenge to override the federal government’s authority on this national problem. The facts are that the federal government is doing basically nothing and it will not allow the states to do anything either.Thompson may be the only true Conservative in the race for President right now. Giuliani is certainly more Moderate and even Sean Hannity admits that many Republican leaders just don’t believe Rudy can successfully carry the Conservative banner. His position on amnesty and sanctuary cities are certainly problematic for a great number of voters. As for the Democratic Party's current front runner, I can not forget all of the investigations that plagued the Clinton Administration, many of which directly involved Hilary Clinton. Yes, she is smart. Yes ,she is driven. She is also well known for being ruthless and vengeful. My main problem with her is her character. I can not respect her. If asked “do you truly trust her to lead the United States of America” my answer is “absolutely not!” Give me a reason to expect her to suddenly change her previously demonstrated behavior and reputation.
For those same reasons, I can't support yet another Bush-like drone. We don't need another set of arrogant "above-the-law-in-the-name-of-God" cowboys leading either. Look where that got us.Edwards has real idea and experience. Typical, ignorant Americans just can't get past his hair and his wealth and that's too bad as all the candidates are in the same in that respect.
Illegal immigration is the hottest topic in the 08 race. We have politicians on both sides that have turned their noses up at the majority (some say as high as 85%) who want the federal laws immigration laws enforced. Trying to pass amnesty bills has got them nowhere and candidates like McCain have been hurt badly. Clinton supports giving drivers license to illegals and her waffle on this went badly in the last debate. I for one will vote for any candidate that will enforce our laws.
Ol Fred'll do it...When somebody writes the script...and somebody types it into the prompterAnd Fred's had a couple to steel his nerve.
While Hillary was speaking out both sides of her mouth at the last debate over the issue of drivers licenses for illegal aliens, what went unsaid is that this is a recipe for increased voter fraud. Under the federal “Motor Voter” law, states must provide applicants for drivers licenses with the opportunity to register to vote. Giving legal drivers licenses to illegal immigrants is wrong and would provide them the opportunity to register to vote in our country. People who are not citizens of the United States should not be encouraged by pandering liberal politicians to further break our laws and risk whats left of the health of our political system. The Dems are all dancing around this issue and Americans are tired of it. Immigration will likely be the shot in the Democrat foot. I hope Fred does take this opportunity and run with it.Hokey, it seems that Hillary is crafting that script for him.
Export, I certainly hope so. I voted Democratic first, and still do in my district. But I can't vote leftist.Fundit, John Edwards is not a candidate for the average people, as he pretends to be. Did you see where he set up his campaign HQ? That's a video he didn't want to allow you to see. Made by student journalists in North Carolina, not welcomed by John Edwards. "The Carolina Week staff learned the importance of standing their ground against a disgruntled source, even when that source is a candidate for president."Good for them. The video is still up.
Fred's sticker is on my car..... and I'm a registered Dem!!!! Yeah Fred~
The City Paper may not be printing any letters to the editor because there may not be any. Or at least any worth printing. As for commentaries by Gill or Reagan, they are still better than those by Cookie Roberts.
Vchest, the occupation of Iraq is the hottest topic of the 2008 election. Health care is second. The economy is third, & immigration is fourth. Americans are all over the map on immigration. A high percentage wants all “illegal” immigrants thrown out. Another high percentage wants to let them stay under some sort of “amnesty” bill. A lower percentage realizes that the problem of “illegal” immigration has less to do w/ the immigrants & more to do w/ exploitative employers. A lower percentage actually pays attention to the issue & sees it in context & knows that immigrants do not use more social services than native-born Americans, that almost all immigrants have jobs & thus, support American society, and that immigration laws are created by the majority culture to control minority cultures. That last argument will never fly in any presidential “debate” or even here. It’s way too complex. As to next year’s election, no one has voted yet, and Iowa & New Hampshire may surprise people (think of Howard Dean vs. John Kerry vs. John Edwards at this time four years ago). Whoever wins the Democratic nomination (even someone as right-wing as Hillary Clinton, who’s practically a Republican) will be better than whoever wins the Republican nomination (and I include Ron Paul, who is, at least, entertaining). Neither field is what it could be, but the addition of lazy, sleazy Fred Thompson didn’t strengthen the Republicans one bit. Does the G.O.P. really want its standard-bearer to be the former lobbyist for Philip Morris, for savings & loan deregulation, & for abortion rights? As for the investigations during the Clinton Administration, ActCit, excepting Monica Lewinsky’s blue dress, they came to naught. The Clintons are hardly squeaky clean, I agree, but if Clinton gets the nomination against Giuliani, then we have dirt on both sides. That goes for Romney, Thompson, & McCain. Again, I’d rather not defend Clinton, since I would hold my nose in voting for a conservative like her, but she certainly will be a step up in leadership from the irresponsible mendacious march-into-the-quagmire leadership of Bush-Dick.Whoever gets the Democrats’ nod next spring, I hope that he/she is ready for serious vote-counting in certain states. The Republicans stole the last two presidential elections. The Democrats cannot let that happen again. If they do, then they don’t deserve to win.(Of course, what are we doing arguing this after this idiotic column by that moron, Steve Gill? Let’s wait for real news in order to have this discussion!)
MJB has spoken, we can all go elsewhere now!!
Wow! This MJB person is obviously living in a far, far left liberal chasm of intense mental instability. I don't think a post like that with all its insane liberal drivel can be topped. Good grief, "Hillary practically a republican" I have heard it all now. MJB obviously needs help with the mental dilutions.
dooley, I haven't seen your name (or posts) in a while; I guess because I gave up my home computer years ago. I;ve been living on the road for years and like to frequent the public libraries, for air time. I remember when you would sign on early every morning, with a good post, and I'd chime in 2nd or 3rd among the usual gang.As for the Fred and Hillary article here today (and opinion posts) I'd wager that Ms Clinton will be on the Ballot next year (1st or 2nd) and Fred won't even be on TV (if I were a bettin man, which I'm not).
I think Hillary can manage the immigration issue by just staying away from amnesty and amnesty by any other name versions of legislation. The Republicans have to be bludgeoned to keep from siding with the Democrats. Only McCain has learned his lesson and I don't trust Alexander or Corker anymore. Failure to represent conservative opinions can turn into apathy at the polls. Hillary and the democrats could have the same problem with a third party or apathetic voters, but I think it will just equal out on both sided. I think both sides are becoming intoleratnt of practical solutions to problems.
MJB, are you having fun?
Hillary appears to take a stance on illegal immigration in the debate and then comes out on the next day with a statement saying she will support amnesty for illegals. The issue of flip-flopping and avoiding an honest answer in the debate as Hillary just did on immigration is just another example of dodging hard issues, Hillary is taking the typical political position that if you have got a lead in the polls, you tend to get real restricted in what you answer for fear you will make some kind of mistake, instead of saying what is in your mind and on your heart. Hillary is trying to straddle the fence and be noncommittal. The media is in her pocket so the average voter will not see her stance on immigration for what it is. In any traditional campaign this sort of flopping would be the demise of the campaign but I will wager the media will not report it. I just hope America is paying attention and ignoring main-stream media bias.
Oh, Plants, I’m no good at having fun, but it’s nice to say hello to you, even though I always know that your vote & mine simply cancel out each other. Well, I guess, that that give me a reason to vote.Have you noticed, Plants, that the Hillary Clinton-bashers (who follow the sexists’ lead & refer to her as “Hillary”, while the male candidates are Giuliani, Edwards, Romney, &c.) cannot explain Eliot Spitzer’s plan or Clinton’s replies, nor can they proffer a proposal to “solve” the “problem” of “illegal” immigration? They simply bash Clinton, because they fear that she will win: Radical Regressivism mixed w/ Tremulous Misogyny. It’s entertaining but sad.Anyone who thinks that Clinton isn’t a conservative Democrat (practically a Republican, which she used to be) has looked neither at her record nor at her past.
I can see MJB “talking”, but it just sounds like “blah, blah, blah, blah”!
MJB, I said that because I have come to think that I know you a wee bit, and it appears to me that you were just having some fun jerking the chain of these pups. Yeah, MJB. I, too, am perplexed at the obsession that “Conservative” Talk radio hosts have with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. (It is much like the obsession that Air-Head America talk host have for W. Bush) I say that because I do not see any one person being elected to the Presidency being able to greatly impact legislation one way or the other because our legislative system is too polarized and adversarial. Just look at what has, or better yet - what has not happened since Republicans were shown the door this past election. Moreover I have noticed that a few “Conservative” nominees to the Supreme Court turned out to be less than “conservative” once seated. That has had more impact than any Presidency. As far as Ronald Reagan’s Presidency is concerned; prior to his election, few if any knew that his legacy would become as great as it has. Moreover, I believe that it was Jimmy “Woe is me” Carter’s economic and foreign policy blunders and indecisiveness that won the election for Ronald Reagan. Not that Reagan had himself done anything spectacular prior to being elected to the Presidency. As I have previously stated I am more disgusted than fascinated with modern politicians and politics. I liken politics to an English Rose Garden being taken over by noxious weeds - politicians. BTW, do not be so certain that we are disagreeable and our votes merely cancel one another.
Stevie boy is still as deluded as ever. Is he any kin to Marsha Blackburn?
Yes, MJB there was the Monika Lewinsky scandal, but did you did remember thatBill Clinton was the only president ever impeached on grounds of personal malfeasance. He was also the President with the most number of convictions and guilty pleas by friends and associates, and:- Most number of cabinet officials to come under criminal investigation - Most number of witnesses to flee country or refuse to testify - Most number of witnesses to die suddenly - First President sued for sexual harassment. - First President accused of rape. - First “FirstLlady” to come under criminal investigation- The Presidnet with the largest criminal plea agreement in an illegal campaign contribution caseThere’s also the :The Whitewater land deal scandal. According to the McDougals, the Whitewater files were transferred to the Clintons, but in the 1992 campaign, the Clintons said they did not have the records. The discovery of the Rose law firm’s “lost” billing documents in the White House. The White House Travel office scandal. The use of secret FBI files by Ms. Clinton to investigate political opponents. The FEC investigation and fines for improper campaign fund reporting. The infamous dealings with Johnny Chung, John Huang, Ng Lap Seng, Mochtar Riady, the McDougalds, Craig Livingstone, Webster Hubbell and Jorge Cabrera, and military secrets sold to China, and the Enron connections. Now there’s about thirty more pages of this stuff, that just as MJB says “came to naught”However, it sure makes the Clintons look really bad when you start reviewing all of it.
Plants, I don’t make statements merely to shock, although I do realize that some of my statements may. I do know that when I point out how conservative Hillary Clinton is (more conservative than Bill Clinton, and he was the most conservative Democrat since Woodrow Wilson) some (regular watchers of FOX or listeners of Limbaugh—or his ilk, I imagine) will feel their jaws drop open. What can I do, though, Plants? Must speak the truth, and shame the devil.I’m glad that you think that we could find more common ground, but, speaking of the devil, I cannot agree w/ a characterization of Ronald Reagan’s legacy as great. During his administration, we suffered through--double-digit inflation (yes, that began before him, but it lasted until 1984)--very high unemployment--a new widening of the gap between rich & poor (a gap that had been shrinking for twenty years)--a bloody fiasco in Lebanon--the funding of terror--the practice of terror w/ the bombing of the Iranian Airbus--support for Saddam Hussein--a tripling of the national debt--the biggest increase of the deficit in the last fifty years--the homeless crisis that still plagues our cities--an Executive Branch w/ more scandals & corruption than we had seen since Nixon or that we’ve seen since--an incredibly spendthrift & wasteful arms buildup--cuts in funding for education & for low-income housing--trading arms for hostages, in direct violation of the law--supporting drug dealing terrorists in order to overthrow the elected government of Nicaragua, also in direct violation of the law--absolutely no effort made to reconcile Israel to its neighbors, or to help the Palestinians--the deregulation of the airwaves, creating the pernicious ownership conglomerates we see today--the deregulation of the airline industry, a strong contributor in the feeble security during 9/11/2001--the rollback of Carter’s progressive energy policy, w/ a concomitant increase in U.S. dependence on foreign oil, leading to, among other things, the current mess in Iraq--no increase in the minimum wage, and lower wage & salary increases over all--the largest one day fall in the stock market--and, right after Reagan left office, the biggest recession since EisenhowerThere’s much more, but that will suffice to demonstrate that Reagan’s presidency was pretty lousy. As to the reason that Air America focuses on Bush-Dick, well they ARE the current administration, after all. Clinton is merely the junior senator from New York. her power is pretty slight. Besides, radio is still viciously, idiotically, right-wing. Air America cannot yet balance the myriad of regressive mouths from coast-to-coast. yes, we overstate the impact of any president, any election, but the president still has much more influence ^& power than any single senator. (In addition, although the Democrats in congress have not done well this year, the Republican were hardly “shown the door”. The Democrats’ majorities are slight. It’s true that the Democrats, if they behaved like Republicans, would have, given even these paltry majorities, impeached Bush-Dick by now, but, as the impeachment would never result in conviction, why tie up the Senate for weeks? The Republicans didn’t care & they paid the price in 2000, losing seats in both houses & getting the presidency only through theft & cronyism.ActCit, I recall most of this, but you’re merely listing charges brought against the Clintons by the Republicans. considering how much time & millions of dollars were wasted on investigations that didn’t result in conviction, this list shames the Republican Party much more than it does the Clintons. (by the way, Bill Clinton was hardly the first president accused of rape.) if you want to see judicial convictions, then look back to the Reagan administrations. Remember Raymond Donovan, just to name one?As I said, H. Clinton is not squeaky-clean, but none of her Republican counterparts is either. If you want to vote for someone really clean, then I suggest Obama, Edwards, Kucinich, or Paul.
