Cooper, Blackburn stimulus votes on the money

Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 12:02am

Tennessee just cannot seem to get in step with President Barack Obama’s administration, whether during the campaign or now in the infancy of our new president’s White House.

When it comes to the supposed economic stimulus package passed overwhelmingly by the U.S. House Wednesday, it is just as well that history not record Tennessee’s Congressional delegation — Republicans or Democrats — as being on board with this financial farce of a bill.

Certainly, this country given its shaky economic moorings needs a thoughtful, targeted economic stimulus bill of New Deal proportions from Congress. This legislation does not get that job done, and thankfully even Tennessee lawmakers from Obama’s own Democratic Party were brave enough to stand up and tell the truth about the bill’s shortcomings with their votes.

Perhaps the most admirable and principled vote among the Democrats voting against the bill was that of Nashville Rep. Jim Cooper. It would have been quite easy for Cooper to vote for the bill, which among other things does propose to deliver about $76 million in mostly infrastructure funds to Metro Nashville Public School’s Title I facilities.

It also would have been easy for Cooper to get on board since he was one of Congress’ original Obama supporters. Since Obama carried his district overwhelmingly during the general election, Cooper could have voted for this bill and never heard another word from most of his constituents. The fact that he chose not to says volumes about Cooper and this bill.

As Cooper correctly put it, this is not cash money the U.S. government has in its pocket to dole out. This is money that will add to our national deficit.

Furthermore, as Cooper pointed out, only about 5 percent of this money is actually headed to the New Deal-style infrastructure projects most Americans think this bill is intended to fund. Half of it is, according to our Congressman, old-school pork barrel spending on behalf of a Congress that saw the country vote for “change” but refuses to do so itself.

Nashville’s other member of the House, Congressman Marsha Blackburn, also voted against the bill along with Tennessee’s other House Republicans. Blackburn made her own case against the bill, saying it simply fails to target the economy. Instead, it seems to target Congressional pet causes within the palette of government programs.

Hopefully the U.S Senate will back away from this reckless spending plan and present a more sensible, focused stimulus package. Perhaps then the bill can be altered in a conference committee session. If that does not happen, then the Obama administration will own this very poorly crafted, expensive and undisciplined stimulus package.

They will not be able to say Jim Cooper didn’t warn them.

CORRECTION: This editorial originally stated three other Tennessee Democratic House members voted against the stimulus bill. Cooper was the only Tennessee Democrat to vote against it. This editorial has been altered to reflect that correct information.

Cooper did the right thing. The school money is just a bailout and would not have stimulated the National economy which is the intended purpose.

Yep, he did do the right thing. There's too much fat on this bill.It should be about the infrastructure, energy, etc. for jobs, and helping the homeowners in trouble, not the greedy banks. We gave them the money and now they want tohold onto it to loan in better times !No restrictions. What a bunch of idiots we have representing us.Cooper did the right thing.Stop with the bailouts. If they're gonna fail, let'em fail. This is capitalism, not good ole boy socialism.

The notion of "stimulus" is: that since we have 600 billion a year going to China, we will run out of cash in this country. True. However, the only solution being selected is to overspend here. This will achieve a temporary goal each year of replacing the lost cash. And it decreases the percentage of US cash outside the country. But then you must continue to do this every year; the economy never "gets well" by being "stimulated". It will result in an ever-increasing torrent of inflation. It will be a defacto tax on everyone. Look at Britain. Everything is tremendously expensive compared to take home pay.Another method that will be more stable is to do away with the corporate income tax in proportion to the percentage of a corporate budget that is spent domestically. Then corporations will move home. The money will still be received through income taxes instead of corporate taxes. The economics of this are not hard to understand; instead they are being ignored and misinformation is being put out. In other words, you know they are lying when their lips are moving.

It's easy to be pricipled when your vote is meaningless.

Here is a wonderful article from US News about what is in the bill (albeit 2 weeks old).http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/stimulus/2009/01/15/summary-of-spending-proposals-in-825-billion-stimulus-bill-proposed-by-house-democrats.html?PageNr=3

Well, I just looked at it Dragon. The first couple of pages are ok, but then itgets like "...and in my backyard, I'd like ayellow Tonka with a GI Joe..."They're gonna bounce this thing back and forth for a while before anything gets passed. We should have a "politician college" whereyou have to go and graduate before you can run for office. At least that would eliminate the ones that can't add$1B + $1B.

2010 should be a good year for Republicans in Congress.

By: Dragon on 12/31/69 at 7:00

pandabear, I wish. The bill was crafted with the Democrats and Obama (meeting with the Democratic Caucus). Obama has claimed ownership and the Democratic leaders in both houses see no reason to debate or challenge any part of the bill.Expect the Republicans to raise alarms directly to the public. Really, does the Department of Agriculture really need $44 million for "repairs and security improvements at USDA's headquarters"? I suppose anytime the government spends money, they think they "stimulate" the economy.

Just brings closer my dream of bankrupting it out (a la USSR) and starting over. It'd be a lot easier than an armed revolt. The Democratic Republic of Tennessee... sounds good to me!

I'm sorry but I am confused. If I got it right there was only ONE Democratic Congressman from Tennessee who voted against this bill and that was Representative Cooper...the rest of the Democratic Representatives voted yes for it and all the Republican Representatives voted No.Is this not correct? The letter above says "among the four Tennessee House Democrats voting against the bill"http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2009Jan28/0,4670,HouseRollCallEconomy,00.htmlDemocratsAyesCohen, Y; Davis, YGordon, YTanner, YNaysCooper, N; RepublicansNaysBlackburn, NDuncan, NRoe, NWamp, N.

By: Dragon on 12/31/69 at 7:00

I suspect the article should have said "among the four Tessnesee House Democrats voting for the bill...."Cooper makes the fifth Democrat. Regardless, it is a poorly written sentence.
