Up for Debate: Audit finds deficiencies in county clerk's office

What do you think of the state audit's findings regarding John Arriola's office? Should the district attorney's office take action?

If the findings were on illegal activities: Yes. If not: No. The only thing I heard about was his charging a dollar each for performing a legal wedding for couples at their request. The only question I see was if he was legally eligible to perform the weddings. And if he wasn't over all of these years...WOW..holy mackerel.

$120,000 in "fees" performing weddings? That's a boat-load of marriages.
If he didn't declare that money to the IRS on his income tax, I believe it's called, "tax evasion". Arrest him.
Who'd even want him marrying you? Is he a minister/ priest/ Rabbi? Weird.

By: bfra on 1/26/12 at 4:55

Arriola should already be gone, however, I doubt he ever took $1 and thought it was $40 like some dumb goofball, that can't read.

By: govskeptic on 1/26/12 at 5:42

These were fees forced upon those that needed the service versus
gratuity which the law allows. The problems go way beyond that to
the paying of overtime to employees when overtime didn't happen,
making it nothing more than a bonus or unauthorized pay raise.
In addition there were at least 2 employees on the payroll as full
time when in fact one was not really an employee at all and the
other only part-time. DA Johnson will never take this as criminal
charge, that's not his style or history and huge weakness!

Its going to be interesting to see if 'Barack Obama' appears in court as ordered today. If he isn't going on vacation or playing golf he might have to sit in the Oval Office and perform some duty which could deny him the responsibility to appear,... don't ya think?

That'll get my vote.

I agree totally, and I'd add further that if he was asked to perform those duties on weekends (his off time) then he is absolutely ENTITLED to ask for compensation. None of us would be willing to give up each weekend or evening for free, are we? Further, if he failed to file these fees with the IRS, then he's right in step with Tax Cheat Gheitner, which is not Metro's problem, but his.

By: Loner on 1/26/12 at 8:20

Good morning, Nashville!

I've been calling for an outside audit of the various and sundry Metro offices for a long time now..This guy is not the only rat in the shithouse....keep digging...I have a feeling that "you ain't seen nuthin' yet".

Woke up this morning and went to the Jerusalem Post, to check on last night's postings....almost all of mine were removed...and not only that, I get this screen when I try to submit a post:

The site has blocked you from posting new comments.

So much for the "shared values" claims...Israel is a police-state with tight media control....we were discussing the Atlanta Jewish Times call for Obama to be assassinated by the Mossad. Must be that I said way too much....I'm looking out my window...no Israeli drones are circling the shack...not yet anyway.

I'm now blocked on all the major Israeli sites....I had better check my car for magnetic bombs every morning, before starting the engine....these guys play dirty....they don't tolerate cogent criticism.

Running down Arriola in January? I know it's become a local media ritual but it's not even sweeps month yet. Is he still driving that really pimpin' SUV that everyone was raising so much hell about last year?

By: Melstruck on 1/26/12 at 9:15

The law states that the clerk can accept a gratuity up to $40 for performing a marriage ceremony. This means if the couple would like to pay him a gratuity, it can be up to $40. They can pay him $10 or $15 or nothing if they choose. Mr. Arriola and his office made it seem like the fee was mandatory. At the very least, that practice should get him fired. And saying he didn't charge it to "some" people like military personnel is crap. He wasn't supposed to "charge" it to anyone! Mr. Arriola makes $114,900 per year, but apparently it's not enough!

By: BenDover on 1/26/12 at 9:43

Oh geezzz... this is bullsh*t. The new hysteria is about tips for performing marriage ceremonies? Don't you people have something better to do?

By: Moonglow1 on 1/26/12 at 9:47

Moonglow1: He needs to be judged in a court of law. Yes charges need to be filed. It is not OK to accept tips. Really not OK. OK???

By: Moonglow1 on 1/26/12 at 9:49

P. S. I wonder if he married any gay people. Oh my. Nashville gone wild.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/26/12 at 9:51

Ben, smile when you call me 'you people."

By: yogiman on 1/26/12 at 10:11

I wouldn't just smile, BenDover, I'd laugh like h.... Most of these posters seem to think this is a social club site for chit chatting.

Did the Nashville City Paper set up this site for a social club only? I've always thought a newspaper wanted news.

And by the way, I see where a court hearing is being held in Georgia today on 'Obama's' legal eligibility to be placed on Georgia's ballots this year. They're having three cases presented today and its "open to the public".

You can watch them on your computer so I know what I want to watch today.

By: Loner on 1/26/12 at 10:11

The guy had a sliding scale? Veterans free...others had to pay more, depending on the whims and prejudices of the County Clerk? How much for a White-Black couple to get married? White-White couples? Black-Black couples? How much for gays or lesbians to get married, or is that verboten, even for bribe-taking rats?

Yeah, git a rope....and some tar & feathers for the nostalgic touch? Just kidding.

You can't let a rat go, once he's been caught....they are very difficult to trap a second time...they got rodent-smarts. You are now forced to dispose of the rat....good luck with that....rats run in packs...if you see one, there are ten nearby....they breed quickly, so you gotta keep watch for re-infestations.

The auditors should be rewarded with more rodent-control work....watch for more rats abandoning ship, if this rat is squeezed....put the squeeze on...squeezed rat's rat out on each other.....they squeal.

By: BenDover on 1/26/12 at 10:32

I was referring to the news-media trying to make hay of this Nemo. D'arge... how much tip income goes unreported from the bar tending gigs?

By: BenDover on 1/26/12 at 10:38

Loner, Obama runs around spending 10s of millions of taxpayer dollars a trip to every fund-raising gig he goes to and you wanna worry about courtesy gratuities for doing courtesy weddings? Is he even doing it as a representative of Davidson county? Hell I can marry people with my internet preacher credentials.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/26/12 at 10:39

We got one poster that makes disparaging post about others making this a social club site for chit chatting. Then he goes on to make a long winded chit chat post about something else.

“Words should be weighed, not counted.”

By: Loner on 1/26/12 at 10:45

I agree, Ben, Obama should hitchhike to wherever it is he wants to go...no more free transportation on the taxpayer's dime. Junior Bush and his daddy never billed the taxpayers for their travel expenses, right? Those two were always out there, on the super highways, trying to thumb a ride.....Obama should use the Bush royals as a guide to fiscal discipline.

I too am authorized to marry people, Ben...I've performed several campsite weddings over the years...I never charged a fee...maybe a little kind bud or whatever...but never a fee.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/26/12 at 10:47

BTW Ben every time President Bush made a campaign trip, he spent 10's of millions of tax payer’s money. What is the difference?

Good question, BenDover. How much "tip" does dargent7 get working as a bartender that he "reports" on his income tax?

How 'bout it dargent7, how much?

Actually I couldn't care less about Arriola. I was just being contrary.

Looks like Obama and Jan Brewer were about to settle the AZ immigration issue with fisticuffs.

By: Loner on 1/26/12 at 11:31

Ben...I saw the photo...Jan Brewer sticking her finger at the prez....experts are trying to determine what they said...lip-readers claim that Brewer, known to have had a few brews, told the president, "Mishter preshident...pull my finger....(burp)"

See ya, Cap'n.

Actually what I think she's saying is, "I'll get you my pretty..... and your little dog too....". Good thing it's nice and dry in Arizona.

And I understand her book sales took off like a fart in a whirlwind. And I believe the pictures showed Barry off from her as she was talking to him.

Being gentlemanly or getting the hell away from the truth?

By: yogiman on 1/26/12 at 12:00

Meant to "say" walk off.

By: bfra on 1/26/12 at 2:56

A bartender is not an elected official, entrusted to uphold the rules & regulations of an office. County Court Clerk is & it has been made quite clear, he had no authority to "charge" $40 per ceremony, require it in cash and keep for his own. The two that made the comparison between Arriola & d7 are just the two I would expect, tightwad & know nothing.

By: BenDover on 1/26/12 at 3:24

So it's OK for D7 not to report his bar tips.

By: bfra on 1/26/12 at 3:35

Do you know that he didn't?

By: yogiman on 1/26/12 at 3:52

But do you know that he did?

I'm glad I fit into that 'know nothing' category in your frame of mind, bfra. It makes me realize how much more intelligent I am than you.

By: bfra on 1/26/12 at 4:03

Your first comment of the day shows your intelligence! Show the site where Arriola charged 1 dollar for a marriage service. Learn to read or comprehend, which ever comes first.

By: bfra on 1/26/12 at 4:04

Ben you aren't keeping very good company.
