Up for Debate: Bill Nye on creationism

Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 12:37am

Bill Nye, "the science guy," has weighed in on teaching creationism and denying evolution to children in a YouTube video. Do you agree or disagree with the points he makes?

Evolution is not contradiction to God. Evolution begins to explain what life is and how we got to were we are today. Adam and Eve may have been the proto types of what we are today, but I seriously doubt they were the first homo-sapiens.

"Science has still not overcome the overwhelming statistics of life just bootstrapping itself out of the mud. In my world complicated systems don't just create themselves out of nothing."

And so the "answer" is to throw up your hands and attribute it to a God? How many things in the history of mankind have been attributed to God(s) only to find that there's a scientific answer? Do we still believe that lightning is thrown from the hand of Zeus? Or that Apollo still drives a chariot of fiery horses across the sky to give light to the world?

Look, just because YOU don't have the answer to the big question, it still doesn't legitimize faith as a form of science.

Captain: I must say even as a Christian, I note your 11:54 posting to
be very much my own thinking on this subject.

KOSHIII,,,,,,You may be correct. I may not be able to do your "technical" job whatever that is. I can however do your supervisors supervisors supervisors job.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/29/12 at 11:18

I think science came first and then religion. Some enterprising man understood the basics of science and used it his avenge over others superstitions. Something like a Rasputin like witchdoctor.

That's his argument, brrrrk...because we can't do it right now means it can't be done.

So, does that mean that it was impossible to split the atom before the 1940's? Nope. Atoms have always been able to be split but our knowledge and technology didn't allow us to do it until then.

By: gdiafante on 8/29/12 at 11:23

How can you be a supervisor if you don't know the job?

"Um boss, I have a question about the job..."

"Damn it I'm a supervisor, I only know how to tell you what to do, I have no idea how you're supposed do it."

Translation; Since I have no other uses on earth, I can supervise others and make believe I am important.

Exactly. What I love are these Intelligent Design types who deny that their position has nothing to do with faith, religion, or the existence of God. Want to see them go into convulsions, accept their premise and then suggest that the "intelligence" in Intelligent Design could be an extra terrestrial from another planet or universe..... stand back and watch the fuming. :-)

"leadership is nature's way of removing morons from the productive flow" - Scott Adams

By: Captain Nemo on 8/29/12 at 11:33

Before you make that mistake again Rasputin, I am not your good Captain or anything else. So just drop you’re self-serving monolog, you do not impress anyone here except for yogi and yourself.

By: Captain Nemo on 8/29/12 at 11:34

LOL brrrrk

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 11:40

Gdiafante......Management has been managing the business since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution without knowing how to make the rectal thermometer that the company sells.

Do you think that Harvard Business School teaches anything other than management?

In actuality a truly productive company needs the skills of the entire organization.

Now I do have a caveat to your statement. I truly do not believe that KOSH for example is 7 million five hundred thousand dollars a year less valuable than the fellow who is managing the ship. In fact I bet KOSH makes fewer errors a year on his job than does the CEO of HOME DEPOT or CHEVRON CORP.

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 11:42

MY GOOD CAPTAIN.........You are an entertainment delight.

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 11:47

Gdiafante.......If you sometimes wonder why so many companies are moving their operations out of the country, look closely at the comments of people like Captain Nemo,Brrrk,Ummm,Dargent7,KOSH. Can you imagine trying to run a plant or shop with employees who think you the person paying their wages and benefits are the enemy.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 8/29/12 at 11:48

Waiting for Ben to use the phrase "bootstrapping itself out of the mud" one more time....

Nemo replied

"Yes"

Unless you're entering a management training program, businesses usually require some knowledge of the business, especially if it's technology driven.

You wouldn't hire someone to run a lab if they've never set foot in one.

Well, maybe you would, but I wouldn't.

By: slacker on 8/29/12 at 11:50

Rasp.. always gets cheeky at the end of the month.
It means his social security check just came in.
Rasp.. is gonna drive his Dodge Dart to Kroger's, and get a can of Spam, and some Pabst Blue Ribbon. Life is good.

By: gdiafante on 8/29/12 at 11:51

Raspy, neither would I want management to have such contempt and air of superiority regarding their subordinates.

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 11:52

Gdiafante.....Include slacker in that group as well.

By: slacker on 8/29/12 at 11:53

nazi..lol don't forget strawman lol

By: slacker on 8/29/12 at 11:56

Hey Rasp.. you gonna dump me just like that?

By: gdiafante on 8/29/12 at 11:57

I always thought Conservatives loved it when things pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and hated intervention...

By: slacker on 8/29/12 at 11:58

Come on Rasp.. take me back. No more cummerbund jokes.. honest.

By: gdiafante on 8/29/12 at 12:00

It's your name, slacker. As a supervisor's supervisor's supervisor, Raspy won't tolerate slacking...even if he doesn't know if that's your job or not.

By: rawhide on 8/29/12 at 12:01

Captain Nemo, the "flaws" I spoke of are the gaps in the theory . . . it is unscientific to ignore the gaps much less pretend they don't exist. The two biggest gaps that come to my mind are the failure to explain the origins of life and the fact that there is no record of any transitional species. Yes, I start with the premise that there is a supernatural realm--something beyond what I can see. That premise is based on the historically-sound conclusion that Jesus of Nazareth died and was raised from the dead.

I don't know all of what Ben Dover has ever said, but he seems to be generally right on this issue. Most of the comments on here manifest the belief that a mere theory should be taught as fact when the theory is riddled with weak presumptions. That's not scientific.

And I think the whole global warming (now, "climate change") debate is similar. People professing to be scientific ignoring inconvenient facts because they're interested in moving past the argument and on to the fun stuff: no restraints on our big gov't melodramatic agenda in one situation and no restraints (in the form of God or objective truth) on our personal or public agenda in the other.

I'd say that the vitriolic, hateful reaction spawned by this subject hints at how insecure you are in your opinions and how intent you are in silencing those who would dare to challenge the secular overlords. What harm is it for you--or Nye, that children would be trained to be skeptical or to think critically? Nye's assertions are laughable: we can't build bridges if we don't buy hook line and sinker his view of the origins of life? America is exceptional because of, not despite, it's founders' premise that we--humans, are created and we are more than a random occurrence.

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 12:03

Gdiafante.......Your comments about contempt going down is so important. I have seen companies large and small with that culture. I have also seen good companies without that culture be bullied and shoved by an employee base that is very much like KOSH,BlanketNazi,Slacker,Nemo,Ummm,Dargent7 and Brrrk.

Every single on of those companies have moved their operations out of the country.

Gdiafante.....I might not hire a Lab supervisor who does not understand the requirements of the Lab, I probably would hire someone who told me we could increase our quality performance if we had a Lab.

"Can you imagine trying to run a plant or shop with employees who think you the person paying their wages and benefits are the enemy."

Can you imagine working at a plant or shop owned by an employer who thinks you, the person doing most of the work, should get as little compensation as possible regardless of the social ramifications?

By: slacker on 8/29/12 at 12:10

Rasp.. you could start a Meth. lab. in the back of your Dodge Dart.

Really? Based on what? There is no conclusive scientific or historical evidence whatsoever to support this statement. And referencing the Bible is like saying that dictionaries exist solely because of the fact that the word dictionary exists in a book called the dictionary....

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 12:15

Gdiafante........As a supervisors supervisors supervisor my skill and worth to the company would be to unmask people like Slacker,Nemo,Kosh,Ummm,Brrk during the interview process so that they would not be hired. That skill will make the company lots of dollars in reducing employee turnover, employee morale,,employee turnover, absentism, workmans compensation and lost productivity.

I have no idea what these people do if anything for a living but you can bet that they are someones problem. It may be me as a taxpayer and purveyor of welfare checks and food stamps,

By: Rasputin72 on 8/29/12 at 12:20

Brrrk, If you worked for a company that you thought only hired you because you were the cheapest hire they could make you should either get yourself another job or improve your wage earning ability. Perhaps there is something wrong with you if you cannot improve your wages and working conditions. You may already know that and are one of the welfare recipients for all I know.

Let me guess...because the Bible tells me so...

If we're using fiction as "historically sound conclusions", Abraham Lincoln was indeed a vampire hunter...lol

Oh Raspie, I've worked as a consultant for more fortune 500 companies than are dreamt of in your philosophy. So far I've been paid well and have had no complaints.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 8/29/12 at 12:53

Raspie doesn't run a company. His personality is one of a contractor of sorts. He doesn't have the people skills to run a company.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 8/29/12 at 12:54

Anyone who disagrees with Rasp must be a scumbag or wants free stuff. Pretty narrow world view he has going on.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 8/29/12 at 12:55

Ben, I'm waiting for you to toss me another "strawman" or "bootstraps" comment. My day won't be complete without it!

I am entertaining, I wish I could say the same for you.

With the exception of a few intelligent people, I'm seriously beginning to think that religion is a mental disorder.

Between the circular logic and inability to reason without saying because God said so...

Seriously...watch a couple of episodes of Hoarders...and every time someone tries to rationalize with the hoarder...just place god/religion in place of the hoard in the hoarders response...same thing.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 8/29/12 at 1:16

jvh, you got that right!

Joust? Rasputin there have been better people than you on this board. What you call joust we call practice.

Being SS check day, Rasp is going down to Bobbies Dairy Dip.
He so.. loves those sprinkles.
