Up for Debate: To catch a catfish

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 11:46pm

On a Wednesday a fascinating report surfaced of a tangled web of deception involving Notre Dame's star linebacker Manti Te'o and his girlfriend that didn't exist. That report lead to more exposure of the practice known as catfishing, basically using a fake online persona to deceive someone. What do you make of the media reports — first the Deadspin article, then the other previous ones that perpetrated the myth? What do you think of Te'o — was he a victim or a hoaxer?

He was in on the scam. There's no one that naive and/or ignorant that isn't named yogi.

By: govskeptic on 1/17/13 at 6:58

It's rather amazing how gullible the media is playing this story along with the folks
at Notre Dame. This all took place before the Heisman Trophy was presented,
maybe even before final selection. It would appear to this reader it was a plan
to get more publicity and sympathy votes for this player toward the trophy. Even
now the Univ. officials are playing damage control for next year's season. In several
interviews he spoke of his sadness for this "girlfriend" and her family. Baloney!

By: yogiman on 1/17/13 at 7:08

Yes there is, gdiafanti. He's called "I'm an idiot amongst many" named gdiafanti. You've been fooled like the idiot you're proving yourself to be by accepting someone as your president who has identified himself to be in the Oval Office illegally.

Or has the been an amendment to our Constitution authorizing a British subject to be our president?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 7:21

I thought the story was about Rasputin, but then what is the deference? On line deception is used to lead the gullible into believing that the world will end on 12/21/2012. To sell to this easy to fleece, doomsday merchandise to dim-witted people that think they can survive the end of the world.

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 7:22

I have to be honest, reading about this last night I thought the hoax was a hoax. It's almost too fantastic to be true.

By: Rasputin72 on 1/17/13 at 7:23

I guess the media feels deceived. I am of the opinion that no journalism school in America has turned out a sports journalist of the caliber of Grantland Rice,Furman Bisher or Fred Russell in the last 50 years.

I would like to ask Te'o or the preps why they did this?

In the meantime Americans on the left and Americans on the right have a much bigger problem. The proliferation of the amoral and immoral underclass is the number one problem in America.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 7:26

You may have something there govskeptic. You just can’t take the word of religious folks anymore.

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 7:41

The proliferation of the amoral and immoral underclass is the number one problem in America.

I know, but what can we do...deport you for acting as such? I'd do it.

Throw you in jail? That'd be nice.

Ignore your idiot ramblings? The most efficient, perhaps. Maybe you and yogi would like to get a room and you can show him your ass. He likes mens asses...he was in the Navy.

This comes from the mouth of a less than perfect male prostitute. LOL

Raspy will now say that he has struck a never. LOL

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 7:46

LOL gdia

By: Rasputin72 on 1/17/13 at 7:52

Gdiafante......I can't believe that a struggling angry working class fellow like you would say such a horrible thing about someone like me.

You need to have your mouth washed out with soap.

It is a little windy but beautiful here today and I will bid you and the Samoans "boy" adieu while you try to get the Lord to forgive you for your attacks on those that are better off than you. I feel I will break 80 today.

By: Loner on 1/17/13 at 7:54

Good morning, Nashville.

I was reluctant to comment on this topic, as I am turned off by tattle-tale gossip that passes for journalism today....and the subject matter seemed too trivial to bother with....but, I went to the lengthy backgrounder that this article links to and forced myself to wade through the sensationalism, spin and innuendo.

Manti Te'o may be great at smearing the ball-carrier on the gridiron, but the kid is a consummate fool...or an asshole. If he was a victim of the hoax, he is a blithering idiot of a fool....if he was one of the perpetrators of the hoax, to garner more media attention & sympathy, then he is a first-class scumbag.

Any person who converts to Mormonism is a gullible and easily duped individual; the "religion" is a mega-hoax....so, the young jockstrap may just be stupid.

But, If this ambitious social climber was in on the hoax, then he is a complete jerk.

So, there it is, this college-level football super-star is an idiot or an asshole....once he gets a few dozen concussions in the NFL, we will be reading more about this "hero"....and it won't be pleasant reading.

So true Rasp. Grantland Rice would have shown up wearing his overcoat, and press pass tucked in the brim of his Fedora. He would have gotten the real story, and rushed to the nearest phone booth to call it in.
''Stop the presses''

This clown almost beat ''Johnny Football'' out of the Heisman.
I predict he'll end up in wrestling.. tag team pardner of ''Rowdy Roddy Piper.''

By: yogiman on 1/17/13 at 7:59

Well, at least you have enough intelligence to spell Navy with a capital N, gdiafarte. Was you assigned to the mess hall because you could read the recipe so well?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 8:00

I suppose it is Rasputin’s flexible morals that keeps him from understanding what morals mean.

Do the Wealthy Lie, Cheat and Steal More Than the Rest of Us?

The simple answer appears to be "yes" -- in certain circumstances. The research supporting this conclusion was not conducted by Occupy Wall Street, but at the University of California, Berkeley, where social psychologist Paul Piff and a team of graduate students devised a series of experiments to assess the effect of wealth on ethical behavior. Their paper, published at the end of February in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that the rich are more likely to cut corners than others when confronted with a number of ethical challenges.

Is Rasp. the victim of an imaginary Swiss bank account?

By: Loner on 1/17/13 at 8:03

Teo was born in Hawaii? Where's his birth certificate? He looks like a Kenyan....is he constitutionally eligible to play football in the USA? The usurping SOB is a Muslim, a communist and a dictator.....ain't that right, Yogi?

By: slacker on 1/17/13 at 8:05

Nemo, is there really a person named.. Paul Piff?

By: Loner on 1/17/13 at 8:09

FOX News should hire Lance Armstrong and this Te'o kid as sports consultants and analysts....their lack of credibility and ethics would dovetail in perfectly with every other aspect of FOX News...the phoniest, if not the funniest news on planet earth.

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 8:11

I respect the Navy as an organization, but the dolts they get to enlist...like yogi...scraping the bottom of the barrel...a global force of god-awful dumbasses...it's a wonder we've accomplished anything by sea...no wonder you see so many in bellbottoms mopping the deck...that's probably an advanced MOS for most.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 8:11

You had better not show your ass to much, Raspy old boy, we wouldn’t want you to get a sun burnt on both of your faces.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 8:23

gdia-

Being in charge of the Ships Head was just ideal for yogi. It was just the thing for his low IQ.

Now enough wasted time on the village idiot.

Thanks Teo,

Never heard the term 'catfishing' in this context before.

"Nemo, is there really a person named.. Paul Piff?"

Go to IMDB and note that Richard Gere's middle name is: Tiffany. LOL

By: wataboutbob on 1/17/13 at 9:07

All of you commenters going back and forth at each other with your nasty libelous remarks are absolutely childish and the reason I hardly ever read these comments anymore.

I wish there was an administrator that would block every one of you!

By: slacker on 1/17/13 at 9:10

Bob Piff?

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 9:10

By all means Bob go for it.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 9:12

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 9:20

Thanks for your input, bob, now good day.

I SAID GOOD DAY

By: yogiman on 1/17/13 at 9:20

Sorry, Loner,

I won't be interested in that young man's data until he throws his hat in the ring to become our president. But I do know foreigners are allowed in our schools and are authorized to play the school's sports and they can become elected to different government offices if they become citizens, but the President's office isn't one of those offices.

So tell me, Loner, according to his autobiography, your man Barry was born with a British subject his father; so how can he be considered a natural born citizen as required by our constitution? And don't throw that race crap in the ring, Loner; just give me an honest answer.

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 9:21

LOL Ben. to both

By: Captain Nemo on 1/17/13 at 9:23

I think Bob and Rasputin would be great on a date. Don't you?

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 9:24

Where does the Constitution define natural born citizen, yogi?

Just give an honest answer...

By: yogiman on 1/17/13 at 9:33

Well, gdiafarte,

I guess the Navy really screwed up when they offered me the opportunity of get in the field and learn Aerology after boot camp. They required college to get in that field back then but I was so dumb I hadn't even finished high school when I enlisted.

What qualifications did the Marines require you to 'pound the ground'? It sure wasn't a intelligence factor.

By: Loner on 1/17/13 at 9:42

Teo.. walks into a gay piano bar.. with an imaginary girl on his arm...and the Book of Mormon in hand. He accuses the bartender of insulting his girlfriend; he does a horse-collar tackle on the fleeing bartender and begins preaching Mormonism....later, he blames it all on a concussion he received while playing football.

By: Loner on 1/17/13 at 9:44

Aerology - the study of air-heads and air-headedness. Yogi was one of those test subjects we read about....poor devil.

By: Loner on 1/17/13 at 9:50

Hey Bob, with your brains and Rasputin's money, you could pool your resources, buy the City Paper and then throw us all out....until then, you'll have to deal with it....free speech isn't for everybody....Bob has trouble with the concept.

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 9:51

They certainly did, yogi. As I said, bottom of the barrel. Need proof? I submit any of your posts.

I rest my case. Now answer the question, twit.

By: yogiman on 1/17/13 at 9:51

As you possibly know, gdiafante (of course, I'm not sure you do), the Constitution doesn't define the "natural born citizen" status. That is one of the two bad mistakes our founders made.

The natural born definition has been questioned several times over the decades and the final one was well noted when the Senate determined John McCain was a natural born citizen because BOTH of his parents were American citizens and your man Barry voted yes on that issue.

So I still would like an answer to my question: If John McCain is a natural born citizen because both of his parents were American citizens, how can Barack Obama be determined to be a natural born citizen when he was born a British subject?

Another question I would like an answer to, gdiafante: Why did Barack Obama refuse to be questioned on the subject even though he was the one that opened the question on John McCain... and voted yes on the both of McCain's parents being Americans issue?

Do you have the answers?

By: gdiafante on 1/17/13 at 9:58

Actually, yogi, the issue with McCain and his parents concerned the Panama Canal Zone, not their citizenship status. If you read the U.S. code, which defines natural born, there was a gray area as to children born outside the United States and that very narrow area was clarified after he was born.

This isn't an issue with Obama because he was born within the United States, so U.S. Code, section 1401 (A) would apply.

Now I hope you understand what I just put forth.
