Up for Debate: Does Romney sink or swim?

Friday, September 21, 2012 at 1:08am

After facing criticism over the "47 percent" remarks and facing trouble in latest polls, is Romney's campaign battered beyond repair just about six weeks out from the election? Can Romney make up ground in the debates? What must he do, reel in his comments and play it safe, or go on the offensive? Also, for fun, care to make final outcome predictions in vote percentage?

I can't understand why any woman would vote for a republican and that includes Mitt. Also, why would a struggling family vote for a republican when they want to take away thier livelihood or safety net. The war on women has gone far beyond anything that I have ever seen. Mitt's remark on the 47% explains his true feelings. But, TN will go for Mitt because they refuse to look at what this man and his republican friends are really saying. If he is elected, we will end up with the poverty of the 20"s. I remember reading and seeing pictures of the poor in the south, and thank God for President FDR. If the GOP had their way in the great depression, we wold still be in a depression. They have tried every year since then to change and take away from the working poor, middle class and seniors. Everyone that has aging parents knows the importance of Medicare and Medicaid. All of my GOP friends hates the president, but loves the benefits, and coluld not survive without them.

I left out two lines in the original Arriverderci, Romney. post...here's the corrected text of the second stanza:

Arriverderci, Romney. It's time for us to part
Save the wedding bells for my returning
Keep my lover's arms outstretched and yearning
Be sure the flame of love keeps burning, In your heart

Arriverderci, Romney. it's time for us to part

Oh... I don't intend to leave Loner. I'm just not going to dig through all the crap anymore to see if anyone's offered anything worth considering.

Tennessee's going to put all of its electors toward Romney pswindle... and Corker's going to win in a landslide too because the Democrats don't even support their nominee. The most effective thing a Tennessee Democrat can do on election day is belly-up and drown your sorrows.

A throng of disenfranchised Tennessee Democrats walk into a gay piano bar on election day...

... and tune the TV in to Florida and Ohio like the rest of us so they can see who won.

And there is Ben, crying in his beer. He thought the Democrats would be disenfranchised and they aren't, they are just ready to Party!

By: BenDover on 9/21/12 at 10:38

It won't be because of your vote though bfra. Your vote is meaningless because Romney's going to win Tennessee by 10 and all of Tennessee's 11 electors are going to Romney.

You can't even support the Dem. Senate candidate against Corker because he's a gay basher.

Waiting in line at the polls this year will be just a ritual sacrifice to the inevitable. Your state is going to go to Romney and some senile ole Jewish lady in Florida will get to pick your president.

Little Bennie is attempting (completely in vain, of course) to persuade enough Nashville Democrats to stay home so that the Teapublican nominee (whoever that is) will have a chance to unseat Jim Cooper. Nice try but no cigar, Bennie.

By: Ummm... on 9/21/12 at 10:45

Little Bennie, your 11:38 comment would lead one to believe that you consider the Electoral College to be an antiquated impediment to truly representative democracy. Holy Mother of God, don't tell me there's something we actually agree on!

By: bfra on 9/21/12 at 10:50

Ummm - Little Beenie is full of it!

By: pswindle on 9/21/12 at 11:01

Of course Mitt will win TN. We have gone to the dark side of the TeaParty and the christian nuts have taken over our state. How many times have you gone into a store or etc. and as you leave someone shouts, "God bless You?" I'm a believer, but this act of brotherly love is almost more that I can take. The church and state are separate so says the constitution.

Welcome to the mob ( I mean board (or bored)), Captain Bringdown. Learn what position you want that click switch in and enjoy the frivolous comments you'll get from the "know it all" club.

Welcome aboard. Pull the anchor up and go in the seas.

By: dargent7 on 9/21/12 at 11:08

Face it. Running for president is an ego-trip and a chess match rolled into one.
Why else would anyone select that whiney Liebermann as a running mate if not to capture Florida's votes?
No one with any brains would campaign in the south: AK, TN, MS, AL, NC, GA, SC.
In their strategy rooms on their post-it boards, they all say, "Who Gives a Shit?" when the southern states come up.
Let's cowtow and lie to Ohio, Mich.,Wisconsin, Indiana, Minn., ...states that really matter.

By: brrrrk on 9/21/12 at 11:09

Wow! Did you see Ann Romney SNAP!! under pressure? Anyone else who saw it think of the show Grimm? Hexenbiest or Jagerbar? You tell me..... :-)

Darg, I bought a book last week that you might find interesting.....

Don't leave yet Ben, I've almost tracked down Kate's.. tits pics.

By: gdiafante on 9/21/12 at 12:07

Your vote is meaningless...

What an ignorant statement. No vote is meaningless. Votes may cancel out but it's more than just being on the winning side and bragging rights. We should be encouraging people to exercise their rights, not trying to convince them to stay home because this state is a lost cause...what a crock...

Be thankful you were lucky enough to be born free. There's plenty of people in the world who aren't that would love to have the ability to vote.

You're losing more credibility by the minute.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/21/12 at 12:41

Even if I don't think my candidate will win, it is my civic responsibility to vote. I will be there regardless.

By: slacker on 9/21/12 at 1:28

The first debate is Oct. 3rd., should be very interesting. I believe they'll both perform well.

By: dargent7 on 9/21/12 at 1:35

"I believe they both will perform well....."
That's what our in-laws said before our honeymoon night.
It was a disaster. Unmitigated.

By: BenDover on 9/21/12 at 1:36

You'd be more effective staying home and giving wake-up calls to your friends in Swing states, Blanket.

By: slacker on 9/21/12 at 1:47

I hear Mitt plans to break out in song, to pander to the gay vote.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/21/12 at 1:49

Ben, why are you so adamant that Obama supporters not vote?

By: bfra on 9/21/12 at 1:52

Just saw a picture of Mitten online, wearing blue jeans, getting out of a mini van. Guess he thinks that is fooling the peons, he so despises.

By: BenDover on 9/21/12 at 1:54

I think they should pro-rate the states electors (down to at least 2 decimals) based on the popular vote in the state, Ummmm.

By: BenDover on 9/21/12 at 1:56

I'm was just pointing out the futility to piss of Ummm and the B' brothers, Blanket.

So, Ben - if you lived in IL would you bother to vote?

By: bfra on 9/21/12 at 2:05

brrrrk - According to the comments that video received, it went over like a lead bomb. Anyone that tries to get people not to vote is unAmerican.

By: BenDover on 9/21/12 at 2:08

I just said the electoral college should be reformed guys... I'm not allowed to use our own state as an example... gmab.

By: BenDover on 9/21/12 at 2:20

Ummm... Coop's a bigot on against gays... he voted for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage... twice. How can you support someone like that?

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 2:23

Back on the board (bored?)....glad to see that Ben caught a buzz and came back..... before leaving.

I have said this before, the oldest, greatest and most effective tool for voter suppression is the Electoral College....both major parties are happy with Democracy Lite and so are the major media.....they hit the "EASY" button.

Either pro-rate the EC votes to reflect the state's popular vote, as Ben suggests, (each state would have to decide to do that on their own....never gonna happen).....or pull the plug on the EC, but that would require a Constitutional Amendment or two (never gonna happen).....the EC is a birth defect that has been with us since the birth of our nation....it wold require major surgery to correct the flaw.

Notice how we have not exported a bicameral Legislature (Congress), an Electoral College, a nine-member Supreme Court and a presidential-type Executive branch to the countries that we have destroyed and then rebuilt.. We know the system is flawed...so we do not export it...but it's good enough for domestic consumption....American are not all that picky....just keep the games on TV and all will be fine.

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 2:37

New York's Republicans and Tennessee's Democrats should have an online Pity Party on election night...in fact, MTV or somebody like that could host a show in which the disenfranchised voters in the solidly colored states get to blow off their steam....there are about forty states that are solidly red or solidly blue; those are the states that I'm talking about....the bulk of the nation.....millions of voters fall into this category....nearly half the electorate.....still, the GOP wants to supress the vote even more.

Folks do not seem to get it...states vote to elect the Pres and VP....citizens do not elect the President and VP....this is an original hang-over from the states rights argument ...a vexing issue that is as old as our republic.

One would think that the US Civil Wat would have finally ended the "states rights" BS....I care about people's rights, not state's rights.

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 2:57

Willard just released his 2011 tax returns.....there's gotta be something in there, some rotting albatross, to hang around his neck.

Suggestion to Mitt's people: I envision a TV ad in which Mitt, is dressed in a well-worn, blue jump suit & safety vest.... and he's hanging-on...game-faced....standing on that little platform...on the back end of a moving garbage truck...his wonderful hair blowing in the breeze. The voice over: "Mitt's taking out the garbage...and he's heading to Washington, DC"

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/21/12 at 3:00

But Loner, is he dark faced when he's doing it?

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 3:14

Good question, Blanket....after this latest kerfuffle about the candidate's attempt to colorize his face, it's a tough call....maybe Mitt's hue could change as he rides in the breeze....a rainbow of facial hues.

The voice over is augmented by multi-lingual subtitles crawling across the bottom of the screen:

"Mitt's taking out the garbage...and he's heading to Washington, DC"
"Mitt está sacando la basura ... y que se dirige a Washington, DC"
"Mitt a sortir les poubelles ... et il se dirige à Washington, DC"
"מיט לוקח את הזבל ... והוא מפונה לוושינגטון"
"Mitt sta portando fuori la spazzatura ... e si sta dirigendo a Washington, DC"
"Mitt zabiera śmieci ... a on zmierza do Waszyngtonu"

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 3:20

It's 4:20 in Nashville...do you know where your employees are?

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 3:28

I took the Polish translation and pasted it down, then asked for the English translation of that Polish...as a check...here's the result:
"Mitt takes the garbage ... and he's going to Washington, DC"

Big difference...sounds like Mitt is taking garbage to Washington, not going there to collect and remove it....no wonder then, that these diplomatic statements are so carefully worded.

By: bfra on 9/21/12 at 3:31

Loner - I saw that Mitt's campaign headquarters reported his 2011 tax info.. WHAT? No paper work to back that up? They can report whatever they opt to?

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 3:41

"Mitt's taking out the garbage...and he's heading to Washington, DC" was the original English text...I tried re-translating the other Google Translator translations back into English and I'm quite amazed at the results.

I did the same translate-back exercise with the Hebrew and got:
"Meat takes out the trash ... and is evacuated to Washington."

Did the same for the Spanish and got:
"Mitt is taking out the trash ... and that goes to Washington, DC"

With the French, we get:
"Mitt was taking out the trash ... and he goes to Washington, DC"

The Italian translation was the most accurate. In re-translation it yields: "Mitt is taking out the garbage ... and is heading to Washington, DC"

Human language is a fuzzy thing, isn't it?

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 3:47

If it's a federal tax return document, Bfra, the figures reported are usually accepted as honest and verifiable.....if there is an IRS audit, then the paper work has to come out to verify the claims....Mitt is not being audited....yet.

How about Mitt's five sons, are they in the 47% club too? I'd wager that at least one of them paid no federal taxes in at least one tax year.

By: bfra on 9/21/12 at 3:52

Loner - I saw no reference to a tax return document, the article I saw just said his headquarters had released his tax info & posted figures.

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 4:03

I see, Bfra, not tax returns, just claims in Mitt's accountant's letter.

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney fought back on Friday against Democratic charges he paid no taxes in some years, releasing a letter from his accountants saying he paid an effective federal tax rate of at least 13.6 percent annually over 20 years.

If the average was around 13.6%, then some years were probably below that number...single digits, perhaps...like the Limbo Pole dance...how low did Mitt go?

People want to know the full facts, not some nervous accountant's claim...show us the Federal Tax Documents....1040 form or whatever.

By: Loner on 9/21/12 at 4:11

Yep, Willard stepped in it when he suggested that 47% of the American electorate are gaming system....receiving the bennies, but not contributing their fair share to the federal pot. Now it looks as though he is a master gamesman....paying proportionally less than he should....a tax-evading, draft-evading, question-evading candidate would make for an evasive administration with little or no transparency and very little credibility.

Romney's supporters are so fed up with BHO, they would elect Darth Evader as his strong-armed replacement.

By: yogiman on 9/21/12 at 4:23

So Mitt has shown a paper. Is Barry going to follow suit and show one of his papers? I'm wondering which one he'll show first.

Okay, click the button, children.

As of 5;20 yhis afternoon 144 comments were made by 16 people.

Two commenters were well intentioned but perhaps a little unsophisticated in their knowledge of how the world works

eight commenters were just normal people voicing their beliefs and bias about the country and the world

six commenters were intellectual and financial buffoons. if you remove those in the 1 percent who pay no taxes and the elderly who live on social security only you can see thatroughly 40 percent of those posting today are the people that Romney was referring to and I have mentioned on numerous occasions.
