Up for Debate: Election Day 2012

Monday, November 5, 2012 at 10:45pm

So this is it. Make your final predictions. Who will be elected as the next president? How will the popular and electoral votes end up (roughly)?

No one really knows at this stage of the game but I hope Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama can't usurp the office again.

I'm astounded anyone could vote for a man as their president who refuses to identify himself. The only knowledge of him is his autobiography which proves he isn't a natural born citizen. Yet citizens are so willing to accept him as their "master".

By: Mike Burch on 11/6/12 at 2:20

I predict that President Obama will win, and the margin of victory will be wider than expected.

Bishop Romney has made it clear that he would get rid of FEMA or slash its funding, on the premise that states can handle floods and other natural disasters better. But Romney's personal record on helping flood victims when he was governor of Massachusetts was abysmal, and it makes no sense to say that having 50 disjointed FEMAs is "better" or will "save money."

Bishop Romney would send women back to the Dark Ages by forcing them to have babies they don't want and can't afford. He would get rid of or defund Planned Parenthood, meaning that more children would be born to poor girls and women who aren't ready or able to become nurturing mothers. That will lead to more suffering for the babies, and more crime in the future.

Bishop Romney says it is "immoral" to borrow money to help flood victims, but he doesn't think it is "immoral" to give $5 trillion in tax cuts (mostly to wealthy people) and $2 trillion to the Pentagon for things it hasn't requested and doesn't need.

Bishop Romney is wrong and backward-looking on every plank of his platform. If we want progress in a better direction, we need a president with the right values, goals and policies. That man is President Obama, in a landslide.

By: Mike Burch on 11/6/12 at 2:55

Here is just one of many examples of why Bishop Romney will not win the election:

"Look at my record: I vetoed any bill that was in favor of choice."

Where does Mitt Romney stand on a woman's right to choose? As a Mormon Bishop with a Diocese, called a Stake, by his own admission he told girls to bear unwanted babies, and he vetoed all pro-choice legislation that crossed his desk, even birth control [RU486] and sex education.

In 2007, while campaigning in Iowa, Mitt Romney appeared on WHO-AM 1040. The host, Jan Mickelson, brought the conversation around to abortion, questioning Romney's pro-life credentials. In a video of the encounter, a visibly agitated Romney explodes in defense of his record as an arch anti-choice conservative: "Let me help you understand. You don’t understand my faith like I do. So give me for a moment the benefit of the doubt, that having been a leader of my church, and a Bishop and a Stake President, I understand my church better than you do ... I was beaten up in Boston because I pointed out time and again that I encouraged girls not to get abortions, that I told them to get [sic] adoptions ... The [Mormon] Church says, "We are vehemently opposed to abortion ourselves, and for ourselves. But we allow other people to make their own choice. I disagree with that view [i.e., he disagrees with freedom of religion, individual conscience and other people's right to choose]. Politically, I looked at it and said, That's wrong! It's not a Mormon thing, it's a secular position to say, You know, I was wrong. We should have a society with a prohibition on abortion in the following circumstances ... I was governor four years—it’s not just what I’m talking about—I was governor four years. I had a number of pieces of legislation that came to my desk that dealt with abortion, abstinence education, RU486, and so forth. I vetoed any bill that was in favor of choice ... So it’s not just my word you can take—look at my record."

And this person who in essence murdered American citizens and service personnel in Libya deserves to be Commander in Chief ?? Pray that God will help us all and protect us and the world from him.

By: Ask01 on 11/6/12 at 5:53

I agree with all the comments against Willard, Ryan and Ann.

I am ready to do my part with my US passport and current voter registration card, just to test the polling place workers.

I may even use my DD FORM 2AF (RET) if I feel particularly testy.

Mr Burch makes many excellent points, but I prefer the baser, less sophisticated reasons I believe will drive an Obama victory.

Specifically, middle class anger coupled with anger in the African American community. Class warfare? Perhaps, but always remember which group fired the first volley.

By: gdiafante on 11/6/12 at 6:09

I was leaning towards a Romney win, now I really don't care. I have election burnout. Just get it over with already.

By: Ummm... on 11/6/12 at 6:22

Poor Little Bennie, this is really going to upset him.

By: Loner on 11/6/12 at 6:26

Hopefully, Americans will vote to advance their own best interests, rather than being deluded into voting against their own best interests.

Romney won 85% of the vote in Israel, where some 75,000 Americans live, but still vote in US elections. Of course, Israel has no electoral votes...they don't need no steenking electoral votes...they control all 99 Senators and all but a handful of the 435 Reps in the House....but the Americans living in Israel go through the motions anyway.

If the efforts to flip the black and Jewish vote are successful, then Romney has a chance to pull off an upset victory...otherwise, Obama should win the EC vote...the popular vote could be close, but, as we know, that tally is absolutely meaningless.

Since Obama received less than 15% of the Israeli-American vote, I'd say that his chances of surviving another four years are doubtful...the Israeli PM and .the Mossad simply will not tolerate four more years of Obama's foot dragging....Israel may try to override the US voter's choice; they have made it abundantly clear that they sense an "existential threat" from Iran and they will not wait four more years to deal with it.

The last US president who ended up on Israel's fecal roster , JFK, was gunned down in cold blood...this time around, they'll use more finesse, I'm sure. Joe Biden is a "friend of Israel"....so was LBJ.

By: yogiman on 11/6/12 at 6:26

Let's see, you have to prove you're legally eligible to vote in a presidential election... but you don't have to prove you're legally eligible to run in the election; ain't this a great country?

Ain't it also great for the usurper this country has so many idiots who will vote for them because they are all so willing to vote for a candidate who refuses to prove they are legal citizens of the nation?

If Barry Soetoro aka Barack Obama usurps the office again, you can say goodbye to the USA and hello to the USSA.

By: gdiafante on 11/6/12 at 6:31

That's the problem, Loner. We have 300+ million voting for their self interests, not the best interests of the country.

I forgot my signature line: Good morning, Nashville!

I also wrote "all 99 Senators", of course, I meant all 100...I haven't taken my meds yet.

Got my latte and my meds...gimme a minute...I'll be back....one thing is for sure, everybody is glad to get this election over with, one way or another...let's hope that there is no long and contested recount etc.

By: bfra on 11/6/12 at 6:31

(definitely a FLUSH)

By: gdiafante on 11/6/12 at 6:34

I agree, Loner. Now Congress will have no excuses and can deal with the "fiscal cliff" that's looming.

Yeah right...

By: yogiman on 11/6/12 at 6:38

We have 11 weeks after this election. If "Obama" looses be prepared for a state of emergency to be declared and a martial law takeover. That is, if congress will allow it... and they allowed him to usurp the office to begin with. Be prepared.

By: Loner on 11/6/12 at 6:42

So, who will be running in 2016? (Just kidding!)

By: bfra on 11/6/12 at 6:46

Loner - Maybe one of the TARP or martial law brothers.:-)

By: Loner on 11/6/12 at 6:50

Gd: If Obama is in the hot seat, the GOP-controlled House will let him take the heat for the looming automatic cuts...if Willard wins, the GOP will find a way to avoid the cliff, to spare the new prez the wrath of America.

We can look forward to four more years of gridlock, partisan sniping and hate speech coming from both major parties...the blame game will continue as before.....the corruption will only get worse....the "donors" are going to demand some payback on their political investments....the nation will continue to slide downwards in most if not all categories.

Of course, we can expect another major war in the next four years...Defense, Israel & Energy will call the shots, regardless of who wins this election.

By: Loner on 11/6/12 at 7:04

Yeah, Bfra, martial law may be in place by 2016...no more annoying campaign signs in the lawns...no more negative political ads on TV....no more John King and his magic screens...just good, honest, hard work for the 99%...in their prison factories...designed to keep people out, not in, of course....turning the USA into one giant sweat-shop is easy, once you void the Constitution and neuter Congress and the courts.

We now have tens of thousands of combat-trained veterans in our National Guard and Enlisted reserve ranks...and they are trained in crowd control and such....they are just awaiting the orders to "pacify" America?

The POTUS certainly has the Executive power to order these domestic forces into action at a moment's notice...for our own good, of course. Imagine Bishop Romney wielding that much power...it is frightening.

By: bfra on 11/6/12 at 7:14

Loner - The king troll has been yelling martial law for the span of his undocumented comments forever & Ben has harped about TARP forever. Just saw where Tarp is still being repaid, so all of it hasn't been spent as Ben keeps harping.

By: gdiafante on 11/6/12 at 7:18

If Obama looses...

I suppose he means that Obama will break apart, like a gingerbread man, crumbs everywhere...then, yes, we'd probably need the National Guard to pick up the pieces...

But that's Obama...those guard members could have been helping rebuild after Sandy, but noooo....

Regardless of the outcome tonight, I hope Obama can keep himself together...for the good of the country...

By: Captain Nemo on 11/6/12 at 7:25

Good morning. I want make any predictions, as I have not done for years.

I'll see you all tomorrow and then we'll see how it goes from that point.

By: yogiman on 11/6/12 at 7:29

Loner,

Why do you think Barry is lowering the number of our military personnel and building his personal army?

That was his first goal right after he issued an EO to lock his papers in a real thick safe. I wonder if he also has guards on it 24 hours per day... at our expense, of course.

Hello, all you members of the steenking internet backwaters! This place, still not with hyperlinks, harkens back to the '90's in political commentary...how can you stand it ?

But, be that as it may, I had to waste a couple minutes to drop in and say hello! to all the crusty denizens still unable to find any modern outlets..

Hey LONER! old pal, good to see you still kicking, and still getting the USPS pension (which is something you deserve, but given the gawdawful economic situation given to us by #DirtySocialists in various political offices (those who seek to garner votes by proffering the contents of our Treasury; mostly Democrats, but certainly not limited to Democrats, since BOTH political parties are corrupt) and staying, I hope, healthy; riding that Big Thumper thinger with the one cylinder up and down the canal's roadways! Keep safe and happy!

Oh,on to the subject of Barry "Benghazi" "Big Bird" Obama! Is there any way this little Republic can re-elect this #SCOAMF? Can we afford another 4 years of stuttering, abysmal failure? I don't think so.

Vote this lying POS out of office! But if he stays, we certainly deserve the fate that awaits us.

By: BigPapa on 11/6/12 at 8:10

Well the good thing about today is:
If Obama wins, the lefties can celebrate and hope to move the US 4 more years leftward "more free stuff!". The right can grouse and play defense and hope for an even stronger candidate in 4 yrs.

If Romney wins the right can bask in the glory of making Obama a 1 term pres. just like his counterpart in history Jimmy C. The left can grouse and claim it was a conspiracy, racism, sexism, and every other ism they can think of. They too can then start looking for their candidate for 4 yrs from now. Heck, Obama is a young guy, maybe they run him again.

By: tomba1 on 11/6/12 at 8:10

Let me see if I got it correct.

We spend over $600 billion a year on the military. We've got thousands of airplanes, tanks and missles, and 1.5 million soldiers, and the terrorists murder our ambassador and three of our military in Benghazi, Libya, because we can’t defend one building. And you want me to vote to reelect Obama to run the military?

You must be insane.

By: Loner on 11/6/12 at 8:16

I don't believe it...Serr8d has paid us a visit...we are not worthy....but seriously, I missed his right-wing verbal towel snapping. He's smart, but, sadly misled and misguided...I've been working on debullshitizing my old friend, Serr8d....it's a long slog.

Thank you, Serr, for the kind words and for your genuine concern for the lone one.

Serr8d is a lot like Ben Dover, only edgier....and a bit more passionate in his misguided beliefs, perhaps...but he has one thing going for him....he shows the proper respect for yours truly....flattery will get you everything.

It's true, we do not have hyperlinks here, but, with my outfit, I just highlight the URL and right click on "open link"...after reading the info, I hit the back page arrow and I'm back to the NCP Is that too much work for you, Serr...where's your Protestant work ethic? Hyperlinks are for the mooching, lazy 47%, not you, my friend.

By: yogiman on 11/6/12 at 8:22

If you aren't born a natural born citizen, BigPapa, you can never become one. That is, unless congress will let you pull it off like they did Barry Soetoro.

By: Rasputin72 on 11/6/12 at 8:26

Mike Burch is right on. It will be a wider margin in the electoral in the electoral college than my friends and associates think. I have 21 gentlemen's bets on Obama.

I know that if I were earning less than 60,000 dollars a year with no chance of ever exceeding that, I would sirely vote for some "free stuff" from the government.

By: Mike Burch on 11/6/12 at 8:26

How can we protect hundreds of building in hundreds of countries from every possible attack? Romney and Ryan plan to reduce spending on the protection of embassies, if I remember correctly, the way they plan to reduce spending on FEMA, Planned Parenthood, etc.

Just because things are bad now doesn't mean they can't get worse if Romney and Ryan raid the budget in order to give $5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in increased military spending. If they start more wars, the people in our embassies will be less secure, with less protection.

Good post, Big Papa...I agree with most of that...as for the "free stuff", both the right and the left want that....greed and selfishness are bipartisan.

There will certainly be grousing, gnashing of the teeth and chafing for the losers...four years of carping from the sore-losers is a sure thing. Limbaugh will probably vote for Obama-Biden. Rush Limbaugh is better at carping than cheer-leading and he knows it.

If the GOP takes the Senate and increases its hold on the House, but Obama stays in office, then major obstructionism is guaranteed. If the GOP sweeps Congress and wins the White House, we are in for sweeping change, especially if there is a GOP super-majority in the Congress....that's not likely, but, it could happen.

Imagine Bishop Romney as POTUS with a GOP super majority in Congress....I might have to exercise my "Canada Option", if that were to happen...there's just forty miles of Lake Ontario between me and potential refuge....I could become one of the "North Coast Boat People".....eh?

By: BenDover on 11/6/12 at 8:32

So when does the push start to begin pro-rating Tennessee's electors based on state popular vote? I will concede that it's not really fair for my vote for Romney to count like 2.182 votes while the Tennessee Democrat votes for President Obama count for nil.

By: gdiafante on 11/6/12 at 8:35

Actually, Papa, here is how it will be...

If Obama wins, nothing changes. Special interests won't allow true reform. Congress will still be inept and despite the complete ignorance of the masses, they still control the purse strings.

If Romney wins, nothing changes. Special interests won't allow true reform. Congress will still be inept and...well, you get the picture.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...(for idiots, the "boss" is special interests)

Death, taxes and this election is the most important in the history of the Republic rhetoric...yawn.

I'm sick of these people playing Russian Roulette with our democracy, our country, our troops, our own lives. The people who vote for obama won't even know what hit them if he wins. Win or lose, he will announce his allegiance to allah via the muslim community. And when he does, I told you so. He is not a leader; he is not a commander in chief. He does not have the backbone to take charge.

I hope the country wins and he is not the POTUS any longer. I'm sure the NY, NJ and PA votes will be a nightmare to count. They proposed in one of those states to let certain people have as many paper ballots as they needed. DUH!?

My crystalline spheres of clairvoyance have finally come up to operating temperature, (old tube-type balls), and I am now gazing into the future...the veil of time is thinning....I see an image...it looks like a red, white & blue bus, about to go over a cliff....the bus has been hijacked by men in white sheets, with tea-bag lapel pins...the bound & gagged driver is a black man....apparently from Kenya....the men in sheets are singing, "God Bless America".....now the image fades...dammit, I forgot to put a penny in the fuse box...I'll fix that...gimme five minutes or so....
