Up for Debate: Employer access to personal passwords

Friday, March 23, 2012 at 1:10am

How do you feel about reports that some employers have requested access to would-be employees' Facebook passwords as a condition of employment? When it comes to the ever-prolific use of social media where are the lines drawn between employees and employers?

Totally over the line!

This practice MUST be challenged in all courts as to privacy and EEO concerns.

not a problem for illegals !

By: Ummm... on 3/23/12 at 4:57

Yet another good reason to opt out of Facebook.

By: govskeptic on 3/23/12 at 5:18

Another of many invasions we have absolutely no control over and
a national congress that doesn't care. Several states have passed
laws forbidding this, whether they have that right who knows. One
thing is for certain, this state will be the last to follow suit on that even
if that type law is affective!

By: dargent7 on 3/23/12 at 5:25

Check out The Marx Bros. "Password" bit. Hilarious!
What's next for these "employers"?
Now, they do "backround checks" and drug testing. Ok.
Want your driving "abstract". Some want your credit report, any banckruptcy reported.
They want your password for Facebook? Bullshit.
How about your bank's PIN while they're at it.

By: conservarage on 3/23/12 at 6:08

totally over the line. i would walk out of any interview of the sort - and refuse if a current employer told me i needed to give it to them.

soon, we will need to all create fake facebook accounts. or opt-out.

what is next - google search history?

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 6:09

Good morning, Nashville.

"Business-friendly" means worker unfriendly...and Tennessee claims to be the most business-friendly state in our union of American states.

Once workers are stripped of all meaningful rights, things like demanding your PINs etc. are to be expected. Employers have rights, employees do not in this Southern paradigm.

iI you want to work in the Volunteer state, you must first humble yourself and prove yourself worthy of employment...in TN and states with right-to-work laws, employment is considered a privilege, not a right....if you want a job, you WILL kiss @ss to get it and you WILL lick @ss to keep it.

TN is leading the way back to the dark days of Charles Dickens...the South is Scrooge-friendly and Tiny Tim is out of luck in Dixie.

I'm not on Facebook...and every day I find new reasons to stay off of the attractive nuisance. Facebook may not get you a good job, but you could lose a good job because of it...why take the risk? Are the benefits of Facebook so great that they are worth the risk of job loss, public humiliation, harassment or worse?

I guard my privacy for good reason...too many A-holes and nut-jobs out there....and they troll the social media looking for victims....I'll pass on that, thanks.

By: yogiman on 3/23/12 at 6:20

Welcome to socialism in the USA. The fact the national government will have this power is solid evidence the 17th Amendment should be repealed to turn the power of the Senate back over to the states.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 6:25

Big government loves these social media....the potential victims are dutifully lining up and eagerly awaiting exploitation....you couldn't get conformity like this with laws requiring such...it's much easier when the herd is self-concentrating and voluntarily obedient....the Nazis would have loved the internet and the social media, it would have made their work so much easier.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 6:30

States rights is what's causing these losses of human rights....the Civil War pretty much destroyed the validity of the states rights argument...states rights is code for white supremacy and the odious status quo. Guys with rebel flags on their pick-up trucks still long for the good old days...when folks knew their place....and the states had rights.

By: dargent7 on 3/23/12 at 6:37

I've had 12 jobs in the 5 years I've lived in Nashville.
Besides the backround checks and drug screens, I take all these silly "Personality Tests" that give you a read-out how you'd handle "employee issues" while at work.
Like, "do you steal pencils", or "if Jimmy eats your lunch in the fridge will you shoot him in the parking lot...?
I just wish the next employer I applied to would say, "How big is your dick?" "Can we see it?"
And be done with it.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 6:44

Darge, 12 jobs in 5 years is not going to get you a retirement check down the road...maybe TN is not a good fit for you? Ever think about returning to Detroit...or Hawaii?

By: Kosh III on 3/23/12 at 6:50

I guess yogi couldn't read. It's PRIVATE businesses, the god of Republicans, which are abusive; asking for Facebook access. The election of Senators has nothing to do with it although I'm guessing Fox must be pushing the 17th A. nonsense.

Why do Republicans hate freedom and the Constitution?

By: dargent7 on 3/23/12 at 6:51

Loner: Tenn. is a horrible fit.
If I had the money I'd already be gone.

By: yogiman on 3/23/12 at 7:03

Where do you think this idea came from for the PRIVATE employers, Kosh III. Just an idea passed down from employer to employer?

Go back and read the Constitution a little bit more. What was the reasoning for the Senate in the original Constitution? Who was they designed to represent? It was their states, it sure wasn't the federal government until they got the 17th Amendment passed.

By: yogiman on 3/23/12 at 7:05

12 jobs in 5 years? You apparently don't please you employers very well, dargent7.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 7:29

Darge, just apply for welfare and the state of TN will give you bus fare out of the state....that's what they do in these right-wing fiefdoms....give it a shot...no kidding...I know folks who traveled all around the country using that tactic....just grow a beard and grow your hair long...wear a peace sign pendant when you apply for the welfare...or accept your bus ticket to your next destination point.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 7:38

Who is doing this? It sounds like another mostly faux smoke-screen story whipped up get everyone outraged about something other than the gas pump.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 7:40

Oh geezzz... it started at AP. Re-elect Obama central.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 7:45

Where's Burch's rant? Did he take the week off from his weekly libel of the republican candidates?

By: Kosh III on 3/23/12 at 7:55

"Darge, just apply for welfare and the state of TN will give you bus fare out of the state..."

Where did you get that? It sure doesn't happen in Tennessee, I can assure you that DHS does NOT do that. Maybe a private agency---wait---righties don't believe in social assistance; sorry.

By: Kosh III on 3/23/12 at 7:57

The gas price issue is caused by greedy Wall Street speculators more concerned with their own fat checkbook than in the "general welfare."
The President, neither O or B has any control over that.

btw, Keystone oil is ALL committed to going to Communist China or Japan, none is going to be refined for sale in the US.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 7:58

Dammit...the liberal media is at it again...whipping the masses into a frothing lather....demonizing employers once again.....exaggerating the harm done....making the world safe for Obama-style socialism....and dangerous for entrepreneurs and capitalists....will a member of the Bush dynasty - a banana republican - save us from the crazy lefties?

Jeb Bush! Please save us!! We need to bananatize the entire republic, not just Texas and Florida....Jeb is the top banana....Mitt, Rick & Newt are merely the chopped nuts....what this country needs is a good banana split?

By: Ummm... on 3/23/12 at 8:01

Mmmm, banana splits. But I bet the Republicans don't use chocolate syrup.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 8:08

They do it in places like Utah and Idaho, Kosh...I have first hand knowledge of that....that was in the 70's...maybe things are different today.

I imagine that some "charity" will pay the bus fare for poor folks who want to leave the state....if you are Jewish, for example, you can go to Israel for free...lots of non-profits out there willing to assist the needy who want to move out....I'd run an ad...In the Want Ads: Homeless & broke. Need bus fare to ___________. Contact: Loner@ General Deliver, Nashville, TN.

That should get a response from those who wish to see the low-life leaving town.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 8:12

I like Mike Burch's missives....Ben Dover loathes them....that's a sign of good writing, IMO.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 8:16

Ummm: A little surface chocolate is OK with the GOP....just enough to meet code...nothing substantive....it's just for show....the ice cream is all vanilla.....no chocolate chips.

By: jvh2b on 3/23/12 at 8:20

Ben - in order for Mikes op ed pieces to be libel - they have to be untrue..considering they are true, there goes that.

And I really expected better of you on this -- blaming the AP for showing this claiming it's a deflection for gas???? You borrowing yogi's tin foil hat today? The president has about as much to do with the price of gas as I do. Even Bush got an unfair rap on that one (but I will say his was a lot more suspect given his extremely close ties w/ oil...but still).

By: bfra on 3/23/12 at 8:47

As Bush is in the same oil cartel as the Ben Ladins & Blair, I would say his ties to oil were & still are very close.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 8:47

You guys just keep taking the WH talking points about gas and running with them... 41% and falling.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 8:48

... even with AP , Reuters, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, et al providing cover fire.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 8:56

This puff piece by the AP is worthy of an All Things Considered heart-stringer. Maryland Corrections Department is the only culprit named.

The bigger story is FB selling the info. And I'd be shocked if the NSA isn't getting a direct feed.

By: jvh2b on 3/23/12 at 9:09

Oh so because it's a 'talking point' it has nothing to do with that it's an actual fact......

Since you apparently know something that the rest of the world doesn't about some magic price fixing going on in the White House, would you please inform us of how you know this along with any proof?

I thought you were better than that....

By: dargent7 on 3/23/12 at 9:10

What I've noticed about "the South" is that they have NO f**in' idea what's going on in reality and the other 49 states.
Don't have health insurance? These southern nutz jobs say, "Go to the ER, that's what's it's for..."
Never mind you'll get a bill for $1,200. and be forced into collection.
Birth Control? No way. But, get pregnant and, "we'll provide counseling, even if raped by a big black guy who's escaped or out on parole. "It's ok, the act of insemination is an act from God...It's a blessing..."
Keystone Pipeline XL? 20,000 jobs, oh, maybe 15,000, oh, wait, only 5,000 part-timers.
Wetlands, aquifiers, be damned..."We need the oil".
This species, called Republicans, went extinct 20 years ago and nobody seemed to have informed them.

By: Ummm... on 3/23/12 at 9:11

So Ben, tell us all what the president can do about the high gas prices, since you apparently have all the answers.

By: Ummm... on 3/23/12 at 9:14

Darge, the extinction of the Republican party is indeed at hand, we are witnessing its death throes during this freak show of a primary process. Once the old white men die off, there won't be anybody buying the tripe they're selling any longer.

By: brrrrk on 3/23/12 at 9:21

Ummm... said

"Mmmm, banana splits. But I bet the Republicans don't use chocolate syrup."

That's exactly what Republicans do..... they USE chocolate syrup.

Interesting piece of information about anti-social security darling Paul Ryan that I had completely forgotten about....

"After his father’s passing, young Paul Ryan started collecting social security benefits until the age of 18 years old. He took this benefit and saved it for his college education. Representative Paul Ryan is one example of the millions of people whose lives have depended on our social contract with the American people. Without this benefit, his mother would have had to make even tougher decisions and Representative Paul Ryan may not have been able to pay for his college education. This social contract lifted him and his entire family out of a tough situation."

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 9:33

Burch's serial lie is that if you elect a republican they will ban birth control. He knows it's not true but he keeps repeating it. It's just like the lie that Paul Ryan wants to abolish Social Security.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 9:36

Ben, what AP puff piece are you referring to?

Darge, you gotta get out of there...take a road trip...life is like a checkers game, don't stay on the same square too long...keep moving...or you'll never get "kinged".

High gas prices? Blame the War Super Lobby (Defense, Israel, Energy: DIE).

Here's how it breaks down:

Defense Lobby: Hungry for conflict & funding; ready for war in the oil-rich ME.
Israel Lobby: Threatening the Iranians and driving up the price of oil by so doing.
Energy Lobby: Sucking in the profits at this point.

The Defense Lobby represents multinational companies, not the US public.
The Israel Lobby represents the Israeli public, not the US public.
The Energy Lobby represents multinational companies, not the US public.

The US president is beholden to these same special interests....regardless of who is in office.

The major media are happy with the status quo, they don't talk about the War Super Lobby and such....they are making money off the bread & circus.

By: yogiman on 3/23/12 at 9:38

When, and where, have I made a comment about Obama pricing the gas, jvh2b? The only thing I have said about Obama is he's in that office illegally and should be removed and tried for treason.

And the more proof coming out on it and the more you accept him as your president, shows more about how ignorant, along with your fellow Obama fans.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 9:40

As for gas prices Obama has sided with the radical Muslims in Egypt over Mubarak, over Mo Mo in Libya, and has let the Crazy Imams in Iraq get the bomb.

And for all of his rhetoric he is no friend of the oil industry and through regulatory agencies and executive fiat he as minimized development of fossil resources in this country at every turn.

He does this to advance his cause of laundering taxpayer funded campaign contribution money though energy grants non-viable 'green' companies.

If Obama had 10% of the criticism that the media offers everything conservative he'd be in the low 30s approval right now.

That's just the point.... they don't have the GUTS to say it. They are cowards. I may not like Santorum, and I think he's nuttier than a 50lb fruitcake, but I respect him for saying exactly what he believes and what he would do... or at the very least try to do.

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 9:45

Santorum has said he will not ban birth control.

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 9:46

Troll finally sez something we all agree on: The only thing I have said about Obama is he's in that office illegally and should be removed and tried for treason."

That's about the only thing he has ever said...and he says it again, and again, and again.

By: brrrrk on 3/23/12 at 9:47

BenDover said

"Santorum has said he will not ban birth control."

Yep.... just like Scott Walker said he would never go after unions...

By: Loner on 3/23/12 at 9:56

By: BenDover on 3/23/12 at 10:45

Santorum has said he will not ban birth control.

Santorum would take away our human rights, like the right to contraception and give that right to the states to decide. And we know what backward Bible Belt states would do with that power.

Santorum would allow the states to ban contraception....and a whole lot more. I do not think that the nation as a whole is ready or eager for dissolution over social issues...Santorum is a closet secessionist?

We need to ask Santorum how he feels about vasectomies...are they sinful? Should insurance companies pay for them? Should states be allowed to ban vasectomies too?

How come nobody has put that vasectomy question to the saintly one?

By: jvh2b on 3/23/12 at 9:57

Yogi I never claimed you said one word about Obama and gas prices. Any one that can read knows all you do is troll on and on about usurpation .

I merely made a reference to your insanity (given the massive, earth shattering, conspiracy theories needed for your POV to be anywhere near reality) and related it Ben's almost equally crazy conspiracy theory.

Sorry if you couldn't tell the difference....

By: Ummm... on 3/23/12 at 10:02

Ben, you said: "As for gas prices Obama has sided with the radical Muslims in Egypt over Mubarak, over Mo Mo in Libya, and has let the Crazy Imams in Iraq get the bomb."

First of all, you cannot possibly know whether the "Crazy Imams" in Iran (not Iraq) have the bomb, and any military action taken against them (which you seem to favor) would, without question, drive the price of oil much higher than it already is. If you're going to make this dubious argument, at least try to make sense when doing so.
