Up for Debate: Fisk may profit from art collection

Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 12:19am

Do you agree with the appeals court decision that Fisk may profit off of its Stieglitz collection, which contains works from Georgia O'Keeffe?

Sure, why not?

By: dargent7 on 12/1/11 at 6:12

There's a great topic over at The Tennessean: Starting tonight, they're requiring a Facebook account to post comments.
The typical poster, a scared little man child, who hides behind monikers like, "Mr. Big", can no longer.
Everyone's upset so far, with violating their First Amerndment rights.
These same people are sure Democrats want to take away their guns.

By: bfra on 12/1/11 at 6:30

d7 - If you can prove, you are an illegal, a renegade or support Karl's spending 100%, you can probably get a pass for the posting.

By: nash615 on 12/1/11 at 6:30

Turns out there's no first amendment right to post nonsense in a private forum, anonymously or otherwise. The newspapers provide the service because it increases readership, which might help returns to profitability.

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 7:32

First Amendment rights does not give you the "right" to enter your personal comments in a privately owned newspaper. That's why they have editors. To uphold their rights.

I think this is a good way for Fisk to generate needed income to operate without losing it's collection.

Fisk needs all the support it can get: maybe if some of the super-rich in this city want another tax write-off they could consider a hefty endowement. Surely Lee Beaman can spare a few million for this instead of spending time and money buying legislators who will destroy civil rights?

By: Loner on 12/1/11 at 8:52

Good morning, Nashville!

I suppose that Fisk has to do what it has to do....so be it.

Posting from my hotel room in Albany, NY....nice blue sky, but nippy outside.

On another topic, looks like Cain is delusional...he thinks he can BS his way out of this. Like I said, the Koch Brothers backed a pig, in a horse race...they may be delusional too...surrounding oneself with "yes men" can do that....the hamartia of the super-rich.

By: GoodGrief on 12/1/11 at 9:14

Fisk has been financially walking a tightrope since the 1870's. Gaining access to 30 million dollars, if managed using past practices, is not going to help. Ms. O'Keeffe's legacy will be dwindled away until the next great brainstorm (the first being the Jubilee singers) arrives to save the day. Tragic.

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 9:32

If the paintings were endowed with the condition that they not be sold then I don't think Fisk should be able to sell them. As for the management of the money I think we all know some people that will prioritize their cable bill and take-out pizza with the money they have because they can get sympathy from people to help with the utility bill and rent.

By: Loner on 12/1/11 at 9:37

Gotta check out...I'll be on the road for a few more days...keep the faith!

Loner out.

Postscript: If I was a 1%er, I'd spring for you guy's airfare to the Bills-Titans game and put yous up in a five-star hotel....treat yous to real Buffalo Wings....but, I am merely a lowly, retired, Rural Letter Carrier....definitely in the 99%er club. It's the thought that counts....right?

By: Kosh III on 12/1/11 at 9:41

Only if the 5 star hotel puts us in penthouse suite # 420

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 9:51

Thanks loner!

Y'all wanted to "see proof" on an issue. Go to 'evidencevault.blogspot.com'.

What did Michelle Obama mean when she stated they went through Africa to his homeland of Kenya? And why did Barry make the comment he was "glad to come back home" when talking to a group of Kenyans in Kenya?

Good morning Nashville. I am on a browed computer so I won't be on very long. I a..m in Virginia visiting my daughter. I spent all day yesterday in North Carloina on business.

Change of subject I understand that there is a 45 car pile up in Summner County. One dead and I don't no about injuries.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 10:05

Shut up old fogi

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 10:11

Hope you are enjoying your trip, Nemo.

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 10:12

You might try bending over backward, dumba.. and kissing your own.

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 10:15

I think there's a certain lack of class in suing over this endowment.

I guess desperation can lead to that though; and anytime lawyers get involved classlessness becomes the norm. Right and wrong quickly fall to the question "What I can get away with?"...

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 10:17

I am Ben. I was in High Point, N.C and then in Deep Gap. N.C. Still alot of sonw at 3500 ft. and just beautiful country.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 10:18

Why would I want to ben over backward and kiss my yogi?

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 10:23

I think so too Ben. Maybe if they need the money they should send it on tour and raise money. I don't know if that is the answer or not, but it does send a message to all that Fisk won't honor any commitment.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 10:27

I will check back later. Right now I am going to spend some time before coming bac. If I don't get back by Friday have a good weekend.

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 11:05

It would make you feel better, dumba... You would think you had kissed the best a.. in the country.

You are really showing your ignorance today!

By: Kosh III on 12/1/11 at 11:54

As I understand it, they will not sell, they will loan parts of it to other venues, much like stuff from the Getty might tour at the Frist.
It will not be all of the collection, IIRC, most will stay here and stuff will rotate in and out of Fisk.

I also don't think the artist would want the gift to help cause the financial ruin of Fisk, on the contrary, it was probably looked at as a way to improve Fisk.

If a fine old school can be saved, then do it.

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 12:14

I would think the O'Keefe Foundation would best represent the desires of the artist and since they sued to prevent it this would seem to contradict your point, Kosh.

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 1:14

I'm sure you can explain why the Obamas said what they did, bfra. Mind telling me why they said it?

By: dargent7 on 12/1/11 at 2:07

"...the paintings are endowed..." The paintings aren't, but Loner is.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 2:07

The old fogi is so gay about himself.

Ask the dummy that wrote the "blog"! Do you know what a blog is?

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 2:34

If .....ss could think, he would see that he is only a joke/door matt to the world.

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 2:45

I though loner would pick that up first d'arge... I should never have doubted you.

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 3:45

Don't guess I know what a "blog" is, bfra, but when I saw those "blogs" in a "news cast" (on two different occasions) I thought those "news" announcers knew what they were showing in their newscasts.

I guess both of them must have been fakes. Sorry.

By: dargent7 on 12/1/11 at 3:48

I was in Lawyer's Focus Group all day...2 DUI's, and 1 Malpractice.

Yogi: You have to have discrimination and cognitive abilities to KNOW FOX News is all right wing.
If anyone can stomach Dick Morris, Ann Coulter, Hannity, Karl Rove....you need to donate your brain to science. Or list it on Craig's List under, "Abby-Normal".

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 4:16

What was you in court for? DUI? Or what did you malpractice; mixing your drinks trying to "make a little more money"?

By: BenDover on 12/1/11 at 4:17

"... 'ump... what 'ump??? "

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 4:23

Which "news" do you prefer, dargent7, the lefty wingers? Sure looks so. But to help you with your ignorant information, I do not get my "news" from Fox news or any of the left wingers on TV or radio.

Both of those "shows" were shown over "news casts" that I saw. But as you all are showing your obvious Marxist socialist agenda, I can understand your comments.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/1/11 at 5:09

Shut up you old fool.

Then why did you give blogspot as your (ha,ha) proof? Go read some more of your Enquirer!

By: yogiman on 12/1/11 at 8:23

I'm sorry I didn't realize your juvenile intelligence, bfra. I thought you would understand the pictures were of different shows your favorite stars were on. Again, I'm sorry for your ignorance.

By: a_heather on 12/4/11 at 1:34

Of course they should. I would think that is at least partly why they were gifted the collection. They need the funds to take care of and house this amazing collection, and hopefully to improve other aspects of their campus and curriculum, ie. their arts curriculum. The collection is amazing, and when properly taken care of and displayed should attract positive attention to our city and add yet another tourist attraction to the many we already have. I really hope we get to keep the collection here. I saw it about 10 years ago, and in addition to really liking the art, I also loved the building on campus in which it was housed.
