Up for Debate: Media response to Newtown tragedy

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 1:14am

What are your reactions to how the media reported the fatal Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings? How do you feel about the inevitable reports that name and show the alleged suspects in such mass shootings, particularly when it's done so alongside phrases that essentially rank the events based on deadliness? Is that an acceptable media practice or does it just encourage others to try to do worse? Finally, do social media sites — Twitter, Facebook and others — help or hurt the public discourse in such cases?

Blanket your need for mental healthcare is obvious. Sheesh! Capt. your boasts, oops I mean posts are not actually enlightening or exciting.

You people are so perfect that it makes the rest of the world pale in comparison. Yeah right! LOL

No Loner, the new normal is to allow nutcakes to run around telling us all how to live our lives. How to eat, how to think, how to dress and how much money they think we all need to keep of the hard earned money we are paid. Oh, they're libs in Washington. Got CONTROL and now we're all doomed to their desires.

Now how about some intellectual dialogue instead of you people hurling your usual insults at others. Play nice.

The media is what it is and is primarily made up of libtards so what do you all expect from them? They are looking for the Pul-lit-zer Prize winning photo or story or headline. You'd be doing the same if you were journalists.

No Loner, bud just reads what we post and then her robot brain takes over and goes the other direction.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/18/12 at 9:07

If and when you post something that is not trollish we will respond accordingly.

Man Robs Mapco with Knife:
Metro police are looking for a man who robbed a gas station at knifepoint early Tuesday morning in the Priest Lake area. The robbery happened just before 2 a.m. at the Mapco on Smith Springs Road at Anderson Road. Police told Nashville's News 2 a man between five feet, six inches tall and five feet, 10 inches tall walked behind the counter and flashed a knife at the clerk."

Oh my gosh! Gather up all the hunters' Buck Knives and the Heinkle sharp knives in housewives' kitchens. Knives are being used as weapons by CRIMINALS now.

The clerk at Mapco should have pulled out a 357 and showed the guy what self-defense is all about. Oh, and they think he robbed the Dairy Queen on M'boro road earlier in the evening. How about a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate and a bullet in the knee?

You people who think self-defense is not a good thing have not been robbed -- YET!

Is bud talking about herself in her 9:03 post?

Loner on 12/18/12 at 8:58
If Budlight is singing the praises of the new US Senator from NC, the guy has to be a full-blown Uncle Tom.....he's the kind of Negro that folks like Bud & Yogi like to see: Black on the outside....Lilly-white on the inside....Negroes who got their minds right....the "house negro" type, I suppose.

You mean like your "white boy" barack?

By: Captain Nemo on 12/18/12 at 9:11

Has anyone here ever been mugged by a bud whacker?

By: budlight on 12/18/12 at 9:12

Obama only speaks black when he's looking for votes and changes his entire being to channel his black self!

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 9:13

We tried the "house negro" politician idea here in NY too....when Gov. Spitzer was nailed in that prostitution scandal, his LT. Gov. took over the Governor's job....the replacement Gov. was a blind black man...after several miscues, he decided to not run for the office on his own....hate to say it, the guy was inept and corrupt....but before leaving office, he appointed Kirsten Gillibrand to the US Senate...she's a dirty bird....she and Chuck Schumer are full-blown Israeli agents.

Kirsten Gillibrand is on the take....check it out:

Ms. Gillibrand took in over 29 million dollars in the last election cycle...and the Republican challenger was a no-name sacrificial lamb with no chance of being elected...why did she need to raise nearly 30 million dollars to beat her opponent? Answer: She can now finance other politicians with her own PAC....that's what they do.

Gillibrand took in over $300,000 from the Israel lobby....but that amount was not even listed in the top ten donors who are financing the beholden Senator from New York.

Gillibrand is relatively young and her seat is absolutely safe....she's on the government gravy train for life.....living it up in the club car.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/18/12 at 9:14

You know what is going on with bud. She is not getting enough loving from hubby.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 9:27

The newly minted replacement for Jim Demint joins such notable black Republicans as Clarence "hi-tech lynching" Thomas, Allen "mock executioner" West, Colin "Clueless" Powell, Condi "converted" Rice and Herman "black walnut" Cain.

By: gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 9:30

What the hell does a stick-up involving a knife have to do with mass murder? Are you on drugs?

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 9:32

The hated nedia has done a fine job considering the scope of the tragedy/
The people, the real circus, want answers and the facts NOW!
They 1st reported the shooter was 24 then it turns out that's his brothers age and had his ID. They also reported his mother was a teacher at the school but she was only an aid years before.
Otherwise it was excellent reporting. I knew the shooter's picture would be shown, his mother's, his boyhood home, and some friends giving an interview.
It's the way it always goes.
And what's this horseshit about now having "designated defenders"? (Bud L.)
Have we all gone completely mad?
We now expect teachers and Principals to be ex-Navy SEALs?
Expert marksmen?

By: gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 9:34

Someone, yesterday, tried to tell me that assault weapons have never been banned, that only the magazines were illegal. Wrong.

Passed by Congress on Sept. 13, 1994, and signed by Bill Clinton later that day, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban prohibited the manufacturing of 18 specific models of semiautomatic weapons, along with the manufacturing of high-capacity ammunition magazines that could carry more than 10 rounds. The ban had a provision that allowed it to expire in September 2004.

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 9:39

Same bulls**** about allowing guns in bars where the carrier cannot drink and the lighting is 10watts. Ever been in any bar in Tenn.? They are purposly dim lit so you cannot see what a dump it is and the vomit on the floor.
They took 1- 8 hour class and now are defenders of the patrons?
Can't see beyond 5 feet abd want to pull out their Glock and start shooting?

By: BigPapa on 12/18/12 at 9:40

Loner is a true master flammer. (I dont mean gay, I mean in the context of internet message boards.)
from Wikipedia:
Deliberate flaming, as opposed to flaming as a result of emotional discussions, is carried out by individuals known as flamers, who are specifically motivated to incite flaming. These users specialize in flaming and target specific aspects of a controversial conversation, and are usually more subtle than their counterparts. Their counterparts are known as trolls who are less "professional" and write obvious and blunt remarks to incite a flame war, as opposed to the more subtle, yet precise flamers.[1] Some websites even cater to flamers and trolls, by allowing them a free environment, such as Flame-Wars forum.[2]

Loner is the definition personified.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 9:41

They have not yet buried all the murdered kids in Newtown...and already, the gun-nuts are claiming that this is the price of freedom in America. The 2nd Amendment is fundamental to our way of life, or so they claim.

The South tried "The 2nd Amendment Solution" to oppressive federal government, in 1861...dirt poor Southern crackers enlisted in droves; they schlepped their shootin' irons in with them....they were hopping mad at Washington, DC....sound familiar?

Today, the secession-friendly states are the biggest fans of the 2nd Amendment....nothing has changed.

The rebel-friendly Amendment should have been struck down when the South seceded from the union....when the Southerners were not in their congressional seats....tragically, the nation missed a golden opportunity to correct that flawed part of the Bill of Rights.

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 9:42

Gd: Correct. And in 2004 Bush and Cheney lobbied hard to let it expire. Especially Dickless.
Typical Republicans in the front and back pockets of the Nazi org./ White Supremacists known as the NRA.

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 9:47

Sorry, I see the "Uncle Tom" from SC so different from you, Loner.

I see you as a man of fair intellect, but I see him as a man of superior intellect based on your comments on this site and his comments on his interview.

Why do you keep bringing race in the picture with all of your comments? Could it possibly be you are a white racist equal to the man you say you admire as your president who has proven himself to be a black racist? And you know, I never heard him say he was an African-American one time. Couldn't I presume he's just a plain old (young) American?

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 9:51

Thanks, Papa. I did not know that my hobby actually had an occupational title....So, I'm an "internet flamer"...someone who stalks comment boards with the intent of inflaming passions....a verbal pyro-technician.....the troll with the torch....oh yeah, BURN, BABY, BURN!!!

Now, I feel that I have a "special purpose"....I'm an internet flamer....thanks, Papa, I needed that.

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 9:54

If you and your "buddies" knew me as well as you insist you do with your ignorance of me, you might begin to come up with some rational comments. But your comments are exposing your ignorance so much it's pathetic.

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 9:56

I heard Loner USED to be gay but took Michelle Bachmann's husband's "Curing Gayness thru Jesus Christ" intensive therapy course and is now happily straight.

FYI: Venture over to The Tennessean today (not for the faint of heart).
Front page article is re: "Guns-in-Trunks" legislation on track.
The think tank in Nashville is using the Conn. shooting as fuel to get it moving faster into law..
These morons would pour gasoline on a fire to put it out.

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 10:00

Yogi: This board, as well as all boards and blogs, expose the writer for who they are.
Believe me when I tell you a 5th grader can figure you out. You're consistent.
Every day.

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 10:02

I've got a little more news for you, Loner.
Many politicians are corrupt and it doesn't matter what race they are. Corrupt politicians in our Congress are corrupt in all four races of this earth. Just go to congress and look them over.

Good honest Americans of all races in congress to serve their fellow citizens are few and far between.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 10:04

My bad, the newly minted replacement for Jim DeMint will be representing SC, not NC...I miscued on my earlier posts....I "flamed out", I guess....."flamer", I like the title....stand back 500 feet....flame-thrower is fueled-up and operational, pilot light is lit.

By: gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 10:06

Interesting read...

By: BenDover on 12/18/12 at 10:08

"These morons would pour gasoline on a fire to put it out."

Excellent Bowie song.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 10:09

Hey, Darge....good to hear from the Left Coast...Obama says he's not going after the Cannabis-friendly states anymore...that must be big news in the Golden State...if Medicare covers Cannabis scripts in CA, I'll be flying out soon...could you check into that for me, old buddy? Free the medicine!

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 10:12

I agree with your 9:13 post. That's why I've argued for years as to where anyone running for a political office should be allowed to get their campaign money. At home, not around the world.

The President? Only U. S. citizens who are registered to vote.
Senator? Only from registered U. S. citizens in their Home State.
Representative? Only from registered U. S. citizens in the District of the State they are running in.

Who else is any of them being elected to represent? Can you think of why someone from your district in NY donate to someone running for office in Tennessee? I can't. Convince me I'm wrong.

But consider: Why did the SCOTUS make their "decision" corporations and big businesses should be allowed to hand out barrels of money in political races? Where did they find that justification in the Constitution?

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 10:17

I don't smoke. Never really did past 1983.
Good thing because in the 6 years I was in Nashville, I took 6 drug tests and they look for cannibis.
Favored cocaine if it was given to me.
Weed made my contact lenses hurt.
You'd have a field day out here.
There's a mag. like Nashville's The Scene that has 5 pages of colorful ads for all the dispensaries.
Many have a Free 1/4 oz. with every prescription.
Over a doz. types and strenghts.
Now, just in time for Christmas, weed candy canes!

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 10:22

Wow...thanks for the fact-packed article cited in your 10:06, Gd. Very convincing...unless one's mind is completely closed on the subject.

Ben, "Bowie"...Jim or David?

The knife-man:

Or the axe-man:

Both guys were good singers.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 10:28

Darge, is there a website for the Cannabis-related magazine(s).of which you speak? If so, posting it here would be a public health service....thanks.

Yogi and I hit common ground...his 10:12 post actually makes sense. Or am I overly medicated?

By: BenDover on 12/18/12 at 10:33

David... he did a song, "Putting out fire with gasoline" that I thought was really good for his genre.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 10:39

Bowie, at his final gig...(Crockett in background)....the illegal and militant aliens making their final stand....land-grabbing elevated to the level of virtuous, patriotic sacrifice...no wonder then, that we support the Israelis in their land grabbing ways...it's an American tradition.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 10:42

And here is that tune, Ben:

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 10:51

The CA mag is called "METRO Silicon Valley" and they don't appear to have a web site.
Address is: 550 S First Street San Jose, CA 95113 (408) 298-8000 .
Might be hooked up with San Jose's local newspaper: www.mercurynews.com.
With your two hernias and slipped disc, you'd be a shoo-in for "medical marijuana".
They'd probably give you a Free pound.

By: dargent7 on 12/18/12 at 10:53

I preferred, "Flamethrower" by the J. Geils Band.
Was my wedding song. Little did I know.

By: Loner on 12/18/12 at 11:49

Thank you Darge...I will follow through on that.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/18/12 at 12:06

When a singular mass killing occurs in mainly affluent suburbs, it shocks the nation — and rightly so. But it might be a shock to some to know that this year alone 117 children died from handgun violence in Chicago. These deaths do not get discussed, let alone memorialized in the national conversation of tragedy.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/18/12 at 12:07

In 2008 and 2009, 5,740 children — “one child or teen every three hours, eight every day, 55 every week for two years” — were killed by guns. In 2008, 408 of them were under the age of 15; 148 were under 10. A year later, 354 under 15 and 151 under 10 were killed by gunfire. All in all, 34,387 children were wounded by guns in those two years.

gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 9:30
What the hell does a stick-up involving a knife have to do with mass murder? Are you on drugs?

Well since you asked, mass murder can be committed with kool aid (Jim Jones) or with knives (Charles Manson). The point is that it's a weapon. So now we need to all go crazy over banning kool aid and knives.

The media is saying that all these kids deaths are hitting home. Excuse me, what about the ones who are killed every day in this country by their so-called parents? And what about the guy in Denmark? Couldn't we see something like this coming?

And now if people are hyped up on pot, we're gonna have even more carnage on the roads and elsewhere.

Flame thrower -- good one BigPapa. They can dish it out, but they can't take it. They are just weenie whinners! Ohhhh. Let's tell Barack. Maybe he can fix it. Oh yeah, and how easy is for him to say he's black when inside he's all whitie and then some.

Anyway, it's been swell, but I'm busy and need to stop this nonsense. Remember, if you are at a convenience store and you're not packing, you could get stabbed!

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/18/12 at 12:19

"hyped up on pot"? Really?

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 12:24

The children in Chicago were different, B2. They were killed one at a time, not all together. They weren't entitled to the news.

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 12:26

So we finally agree on something, eh, Loner? Hang in there, young man. You might learn something and agree about the Constitutional qualifications for president some day.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/18/12 at 12:27

That's the point, Captain Obvious.

By: gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 12:32

lol blanket

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/18/12 at 12:34

Seriously, g.

By: gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 12:40

Bud too...well maybe, it's hard to tell being all hyped up on pot...lol

By: yogiman on 12/18/12 at 12:40

You can also get killed with a hammer, budlight... or a baseball bat or a sharp limb off of a tree. All it takes is a for a determined killer to find their target and what they want to use. And they all prefer someone that can't defend themselves.

How many times have you read where a killer has killed a [man] they thought might could beat the hell out of them?

By: gdiafante on 12/18/12 at 12:44

Yogi, please cite the instance where someone attempted a mass murder with a sharp limb, a hammer or baseball bat. That's an incredibly stupid train of thought.

I'll explain if for the intellectually challenged...automatic weapons provide the means to an end for those committed to killing people on a mass scale.

End of discussion.
