Up for Debate: MNPS to cut 100-plus jobs

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 11:50pm

What do you make of Metro Nashville Public Schools' announcement that 100-plus teacher aide positions would be cut as federal stimulus money vanishes? The move comes at a time when a property tax increase is before the Metro Council, and Mayor Karl Dean has said that new tax revenue would not only allow for the hiring of more teachers, increasing their starting salary by $5,000 annually, but also prevent to loss of 50 police officers hired via a federal COPS grant. Are the MNPS cuts a good move, bad move or just plain necessary move?

Beer: The LA Times has Obama's Birth Cert. on line. Full view.
Once "yogi" recuperates from his catarac surgery he may be able to read it.
The headline might confuse him, "Certificate of Live Birth" throws the "Birther's" off.

By: Beernazi on 5/23/12 at 8:50

darge, I don't think it's the cataracs that prevent the message from getting through - lol!

By: BenDover on 5/23/12 at 8:51

Stimulus wasn't big enough? Holy crap dude... how long do you think we can prop up as much as 10% of GDP with deficit spending? That's the math that doesn't work and the reason there's been no private sector recovery is because everyone knows that chicken must eventually come home to roost.

Breaking government windows to advance the economy forgets that spending is fungible and that money would have otherwise been spent on productive purposes that didn't necessarily involve Obama's favorite voting blocks.

Now we're staring down unsustainable spending levels that were ratcheted up under a flawed Keynesian philosophy that is so popular with the government class (because it rationalizes their desired behavior spend and it's easy to ignore the call of Keynesian economics to pay back the deficits in the good times); and not only do we have a great big tab for all the spending we've already done but also we have raised on-going spending levels to add to the hang-over.

Once again, to quote the great slack one:

You can lead a horse to water but you can't shut up a birther!

By: Beernazi on 5/23/12 at 8:52

but on a more important note....

Ben, have you tried the Salvadoran place for breakfast yet?

By: Captain Nemo on 5/23/12 at 8:53

dy, I’m glad that my instinct told me not to buy.

@ yogi

That is instinct as in 1
: a natural or inherent aptitude, impulse, or capacity
a : a largely inheritable and unalterable tendency of an organism to make a complex and specific response to environmental stimuli without involving reason b : behavior that is mediated by reactions below the conscious level

Not "end stinks" as in yogi dirty diaper needs changing.

lol, Nemo!

Do they have Mimosas?

By: Beernazi on 5/23/12 at 8:57

LOL! Uh, that's about as likely as Hermitage Cafe having Mimosas! They have coffee, juice and soda. Whaddaya think this is......

Hawaii has "verified" a birth certificate, dargent7. If it is actually a certified birth certificate, why has it been kept under lock and key so long and millions spent to keep it and all other papers on Obama under lock and key? Let's see what they show the officers from Sheriff Arpaio's Passe going over there to see it.

They only "verified" it because the Sec. of State of Arizona said he would pull Obama's name from their ballot if they didn't certify his birth record.

Another question: Why did that publisher show him as being born in Kenya when promoting his literature in 1991 and repeating it in 2007? Why was his birthplace changed in 2008? Could it just possibly be because he wasn't thinking about running for president from 1991 to 2008?

eastsidegirl nailed it. Actually, our property tax rate is really low compared to cities of similar size. Services are not free!

Our taxes are higher than Willliamson County, Rutherford County and Wilson County all of which have great neighborhoods and services.

By: Beernazi on 5/23/12 at 10:00

Davidson County has more population, though.

By: yogiman on 5/23/12 at 10:01

That "piece of paper" shown by the LA Times as a
Hawaii's "certified" copy of Obama's birth certificate is the same piece of paper Obama showed on TV last year to get WND off his back. It is a fake from the word go. It is a computer generated paper.

"PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani doctor who helped the U.S. track down Osama bin Laden was convicted of high treason Wednesday and sentenced to 33 years in prison, officials said, a verdict that is likely to further strain the country's relationship with Washington.

Shakil Afridi ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden's presence at the compound in the town of Abbottabad where U.S. commandos killed the al-Qaida chief last May. The operation outraged Pakistani officials because they were not told about it beforehand."

Darn thos Pakistanis; you can't trust a single one of them. 33 years for turning in the Osama! Wonder how many years the Pakistanis would give Obama for taking credit for the kill? Hmmmmmm! We need to be careful who we jump into the proverbial sack with. I have never trusted those Paks! Met some in Yellowstone Park one time who were "touring". Funny thing, they were all engineers and did not seem like the "green" outdoorsie type to me. One of them made a statement that I have never forgotten: "The U.S. underestimates Pakistan and the power of Pakistan". He was a scarey scarey guy!

Oh well, Obama took credit for it so at least they won't come after any of us peons in the City Paper!

By: Rasputin72 on 5/23/12 at 10:11

Captain Nemo......I want you to go back and re-read my earlier post. Try with all your might to look deeply at that phrase about Hume Fogg and MLK. After you read that phrase over and over and over, come on back and post where you think that sentence is derogatory towards these two schools.

I am not discrediting you as we all have a skill in which we earn a living. I would guess that your skill is more in line with something non-academic and intellectually non-sophisticated.

Why don't you let your newly graduated daughter read these posts for you and give you an educated opinion as to what they say?

Except it was common for people to put that as their race...you know...just like they now put African-American...etc. Now you know, Scarlett.

If you want to know the "natural born citizen" definition of the Supreme Court, I suggest you go to;

Do you agree or disagree with the Supreme Court?

By: Loner on 5/23/12 at 10:44

It's good to see BN back on the board.

If they have to let 50 cops go, I hope that they keep that cop who could smell Cannabis growing inside people's homes....from a distance....Officer Gruff, or something along those lines....he has a nose for trouble....worth 50 cops and 50 police dogs for sure.

And if some teachers have to be let go, let's hope that they fire the teachers who teach about evolution and those pesky "gateway body parts". Fire the liberals!

By: slacker on 5/23/12 at 10:47

The Supreme Court, is the Supreme Court.
-Natural born citizen

By: yogiman on 5/23/12 at 10:52

What are you saying, slacker? The Supreme Court is simply a name only? What is your understanding of a "natural born citizen"?

It will only take 10 minutes of your time. I suggest you listen to that program I referred to in my 11:40 post.

By: gdiafante on 5/23/12 at 10:53

The Constitution does not define the phrase natural-born citizen, and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its precise meaning. The Congressional Research Service has stated that the weight of scholarly legal and historical opinion indicates that the term means one who is entitled under the Constitution or laws of the United States to U.S. citizenship "at birth" or "by birth", including any child born "in" the United States, even to alien parents (other than to foreign diplomats serving their country), the children of United States citizens born abroad, and those born abroad of one citizen parent who has met U.S. residency requirements.

Source: "Qualifications for President and the 'Natural Born' Citizenship Eligibility Requirement". Congressional Research Service. November 14, 2011. p. 2. http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R42097.pdf. Retrieved February 25, 2012. "In addition to historical and textual analysis, numerous holdings and references in federal (and state) cases for more than a century have clearly indicated that those born in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction (i.e., not born to foreign diplomats or occupying military forces), even to alien parents, are citizens 'at birth' or 'by birth,' and are 'natural born,' as opposed to 'naturalized,' U.S. citizens. There is no provision in the Constitution and no controlling American case law to support a contention that the citizenship of one’s parents governs the eligibility of a native born U.S. citizen to be President."

Supreme Court Opinions:

United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898): 169 U.S. 649, 42 L.Ed. 890, 18 S.Ct. 456.

Perkins v. Elg (1939) 307 U.S. 325 at 329, 83 L.Ed. 1320 at 1324, 59 S.Ct. 884 at 888.

Read it and weep, sweet Scarlett

Loner, no problem, no one will be let go. I hear they're gonna hire 50 more police officers with those ''super sensitive'' nostrils, complete with a Rhinologist.
They're affectionately known as ''The Jimmy Durante Squad.''

By: yogiman on 5/23/12 at 11:01

I'm a "birther", Beernazi? I must disagree. I'm an American citizen that wants a natural born American citizen as required by my nation's Constitution in my White House. And I don't have one currently. I know it, and Barry Soetoro (a.k.a. Barack Obama) knows it.

Otherwise he would have readily shown his true birth certificate and saved himself a couple of million bucks.

By: gdiafante on 5/23/12 at 11:05

Um...you just defined exactly what a "birther" is, Scarlett...major fail.

By: Loner on 5/23/12 at 11:08

The JD Squad...I like that, Slack....but will the cops discriminate in favor of white guys with Slavic roots and against guys with SE Asian roots?

When it comes to length of snozzola, the Poles and Russians have a natural advantage....I know...I am one of those Slavic types. Apparently, the snows were so deep back in the Motherland, that the Slavs developed a snorkel-type of nose....long and internally hairy...they carried their noses high....to keep the snow out.

To Zuck, or not to Zuck, that is the question...

By: Loner on 5/23/12 at 11:16

FB was valued in the $100 billion dollar range...before the stock offerings to the public...zuckers invested....now FB resembles an inner-tube losing air....they say it's a "slow leak"...no need to panic...the boys are pumping more into the inflatable toroid....she'll be fine....heh, heh....keep pumping boys!

By: slacker on 5/23/12 at 11:17

Loner, no..no.. those guys would arrest their momma. They're gonna crack down more on prostitution also.Gonna use federal grant money, to hire off duty ''Hooters Girls'' as bait.
They're motto: ''Whatta you think God gave you a right hand for''

By: gdiafante on 5/23/12 at 11:17

Looks like the feds may investigate, Loner. Seems investors may have been mislead.

Personally, I don't believe that anyone on Wall Street would resort to such tactics...
