Up for Debate: Police fight gang with civil suit

Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 12:20am

Metro legal and the police department hope to use a civil suit to obtain a court-ordered injunction against the Kurdish Pride gang and its most active members. Do you believe such a tactic could work? Do you agree with the use of civil suits against gang members, or any group of people? Do you worry that the use of such legal tools could lead to an infringement of civil rights, such as the right to associate with others and right to due process?

And regarding taxes, who gives a sh!t. No one wants to pay taxes, that's a straw man, but at least I realize that I enjoy nice roads...police protection...fire protection...indoor plumbing...electricity...somewhat clean air...transportation standards (would you like to fly in a plane in Russia?), etc.

We've got one of the lowest tax rates in the world, with a very high standard of living, but it still isn't enough for some.

Greed, for lack of a better term, is good.

Ezra Kline (of Journolist fame) calls it, "the 'fastest, fairest and smartest policy think-tank in Washington"... lol

That doesn't mean underfunded public sector pension promises are not going to bankrupt the country gd.

LOL papa...can't think of anything to say so you declare yourself a winner.

You're special...and dog-gone-it, people like you...

BigPapa, thanks to the Repub. Supreme Court and its Citizens United decision, the lackeys of the oligarchy- like Scott Walker -can now rely on the Koch bothers and other 1%ers to buy elections for them. Thanks to all their money, Walker had an 8 to 1 spending edge over his challenger- not much of a surprise that he won.

Ummm, Obama was blatently missing from the battle to recall Walker. Obama knew that the dems would lose so he stayed out of the battle. There was no reason to even wage the battle. Walker just did what he said he was going to do before he was elected.

I'm getting an injunction against that arsehole (you know who you are) that cut me off in traffic on Harding road yesterday.
Gonna relocate the Putz to Antioch.

He probably already lives here. But honestly, the drivers in TN are all from some other part of the country so that might be the problem. Add to that the drivers who can't read English and still get a drivers license, plus the teenagers on dope and the DUI's who are still driving after 12 DUI's and you get . . . . you get a Putz who cuts you off in traffic on Harding road yesterday! LOL

Nobody says you should pay zero taxes, it's just how the money is spent and on what.

BenDover got it perfect Re: pensions
We should pay out pensions to those that were hired with that promise, but to continue to make a false promise to new hires is dishonest. New hires should be offered a 401k.
If the NEA or FOP want to offer a pension to their members, go for it. But when it goes belly up, go back to membership to cover the gap, not the tax payer.

Unless you're enjoying the odor you're getting now through your obviously fully stuffed nose, bfra, I'm afraid the you're going to find out it's communist s... you're smelling.

I don't believe they are, Ben. Because, employment will pick up, revenue will increase (it already has in many states). I've said it many times before, reform is the key, not elimination.

So you reform public pension plans, not act like a bull in a china shop and begin to eliminate collective bargaining rights, etc.

For some reason, being a public servant has become an unhonorable occupation. You don't want to attack big government, you want to attack the government clerk making $25K a year...or teachers, who IMO, deserve more than what they're getting.

Papa once said "Those who can do, and those who can't teach." Is there a bigger bunch of BS than that? And then he wonders why I think of him as a dullard.

By: slacker on 6/6/12 at 9:35

gdiafante, reform is what happened in Wisconsin..no?

By: gdiafante on 6/6/12 at 9:37

Removing the ability to bargain is reform? News to me.

That's odd, because the name attached is yogi.

How's that Romney family tree and Mormonism research project comming along, "yogi"?

By: gdiafante on 6/6/12 at 9:45

There is a difference between trying to fix public employee pensions and trying to destroy them. If you guys can't understand that, then this entire dialogue is as useless as trying to have a rational discussion with yogi.

Depends..... :-)

gdiafante, as I understand it, the union can bargain for pay raises, just not above inflation.
Also govt. employees are required to pay more into their pension & health ins.

By: BenDover on 6/6/12 at 9:52

The unions were p*ssed because Walker gave the employees the right to opt-out of the Union. They were willing to roll over on everything else.

By: gdiafante on 6/6/12 at 9:53

They eliminated all bargaining power for everything but pay. Note the word eliminated.

By: slacker on 6/6/12 at 10:00

Well, they can load up again when the Democrats get back into power.

By: BenDover on 6/6/12 at 10:04

I think it's a smart move that today's politicians can't negotiate to spend tomorrow's revenues... don't you, gd? That's a racket that's needed to have been fixed for decades.

By: Rasputin72 on 6/6/12 at 11:26

Well, things got off to a stumbling start. However with a little bit of priming it appears that we have a great day of showing the world how divided this country really is.

14 people right here in Nashville,Tennessee can only agree on one thing. This country is in sad shape for reasons that no one can agree on.

By: govskeptic on 6/6/12 at 11:53

We need to stop those Kurdish Bullies along with SEIU members that bully
our poor defensive council members about giving their members more & more!
Metro Legal can handle 2 of these cases as easily as one!

Well.. I take great pride in my German/Irish heritage, affectionately known as ''KrautMicks'' I'm now drinking a beer, whilst eating a Bratwurst.

By: slacker on 6/6/12 at 12:13

''KrautMicks'' never congregate in parks, mostly bars and honky-tonks.

I understand you went to college, dargent7. Did you graduate? Did you take any lessons in civics?

You keep bringing Romney's name up on legal eligibility. I've told you before but your mind apparently isn't working too well.

Mitt Romney is a natural born American citizen. How did he earn that honor? Because the man and woman who claim to be his parents are (if they haven't passed away) US citizens, both of them.

To compare, you said your father was from Canada. Did he become an American citizen before you was born? If not, you aren't a natural born citizen, only a native born citizen..., that is if you was born in the USA.

The bad issue on Romney is the Republican party keeps throwing Marco Rubio's name into the picture and Rubio is not a natural born citizen. He was 4 years old before his parents became American citizens and Romney isn't saying anything about it. Do they feel they can ignore the Constitution because the Democrats did it with Obama?

It has been claimed the Supreme Court has never defined 'natural born citizen'. Read their decision on the Minor v. Happersett and you will see where they noted why they determined she was a natural born citizen. Because her parents were American citizens... both of them.
