Up for Debate: Is there room for a driver-owned taxi company?

Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:58am

Should a request by taxi drivers to start their own driver-owned company be granted by allowing more taxi permits? Would the potential competition among companies help consumers more than a possible increased strain on Metro resources might hurt?

Should the "guvmunt" have the authority to deny someone the privilege of going into a privately owned business and deny them a competitive business?

As of now, we are still living in the good ole US of A. Why should the "guvmunt" use their power to determine whom can be in a particular business? Is that authority also considered for all other businesses to determine competition?

This is just amazing that yogi would be standing up for people from Africa, to have their own business. Has the old fart changed his ways, or is it that he does not understand the whole story and just venting his rage on the government?

So should teachers make $150,000 a year? Maybe $300,00? The fact is this, teaching isn't that hard or difficult nor does it require very specialized knowledge. These are the things that get you paid big money in the USA.

Most people are very very replaceable and they don't earn much, those that do have very specialized, sought after skills make bank. It's really THAT complicated.

How long have you been teaching?

Just ask your "buddy" dumba.., dargent7. I'm sure he can give your directions to my home. But be warned, have your funeral pre-payed before you come for said purpose. And I must advise you, I never shoot to wound. You ain't gonna sue me for plastering your behind.
When I read yogi’s post, I couldn’t help but to think of the story of the sex crazed flee climbing the elephants back with rape on is mind. It was a tragic ending for the silly flee, when the elephant sat down.

Financial responsibility and accountability should be the main concern for
those approving these type license for anyone individually or corporation!
"Taxi Service" is a public conveyance and deserves more scrutiny than many
other types of private business!

Note the comparison between the Dung Beetle and Barney Fife.

By: yogiman on 11/16/11 at 1:58
Heck bfra, me 'n Barneys' knowed each uther fer yares. Heck, he could come on in fer 'nutha cupa coffee. We'd have a good argument (agreement to you) over yore crap.
Barney is often overly analytical and alarmist about benign situations, such as the modest Mayberry crime scene. He takes a minor infraction, blows it out of proportion, and then concocts an elaborate solution (sometimes involving inept civilians, like Otis Campbell
or Gomer Pyle
Gomer Pyle is the name of a bubbly, gentle, rural auto mechanic played by American singer/ television actor Jim Nabors. Gomer Pyle became a character on..) to resolve it. This only inflicts tremedous angst on Andy. In one early episode, where Andy was briefly summoned away, acting sheriff Barney proceeds to book and lock up nearly everyone in town. Despite his shortcomings, Barney is zealous about law enforcement, regularly spouting off penal codes and ordinances to thugs and jaywalkers alike.

An emotional powderkeg, Barney often overreacts with panic, despair or bug-eyed fear. He has what he describes as a "low sugar blood content." Barney is smug and self-confident, until true leadership is sought, whereupon he dances about in a fluster. Outwardly "a man of the world," Barney is truly naïve and easily duped. Though constantly warned by Andy, Barney falls for countless scams. This gullibility is evident in many episodes, including, ("Barney's First Car") where he is conned into buying a lemon

There were so many funny Barney Fife episodes. Andy Griffith was like Seinfeld. You could watch them over and over.
Nowadays, just try to not wince watching 2 minutes of, "Two and a Half Men", with Charlie Sheen. The sound engineer just keeps the laught track on FULL the entire show.

I'm watching 2 Brokw Girls now.

"oops!" I believe talking about Barney Fife is "OFF Topic".

There cannt be a dumber, un-funny show on tv than "Two and a Half Men".
And that Sheen idiot got $2. million an episode?

This just in...re: dumb: Gingrich's excuse why he received $300,000 in 1999 and $1.8 million in 2002, calling it "strategic advice", from Fannie and Freddie Mac.

Good morning, Nashville!

As for the topic of the day:

I went to the main article and board for this story., to get some background. Here is a snippet:

"It’s a challenge. Everybody think it is easy,” said Michael Solomon, executive vice president of Taxi USA of Tennessee, which operates Nashville Cab, Allied Cab and Diamond Cab."

So, one guy operates at least three cab companies and he's the main obstacle to increased competition, from an owner-based competitor? And the bureaucrat who approves the permits,, Brian McQuistion, director of the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission, is also against any new competition? Hmmm...follow the money....I smell corruption here.

This Solomon character owns three cab companies? Something fishy there....and the drivers own , insure and maintain the vehicles that carry his logos? You gotta be kidding.

Now, some African immigrants want to take advantage of America's freedoms, its free marketplace and its free enterprise....but they are now facing an entrenched, time-honored,sweetheart arrangement that is telling them to go to hell.

My advice is to investigate and audit Mr. Solomon and Mr. McQuistion and their respective operations. Gotta be some kind of kickback-sweetheart deal going on here.....this stinks.

By: yogiman on 11/17/11 at 7:43

People from Africa should go in business in their home country of their Continent of Africa. Why would they want to go in private business here in the USA? But if they come to the USA legally and want to go in business, why should they be denied?

And what type of insect was you talking about on the elephant's back? Was that a flea fleeing, or was that fleeing insect a flea?

By: yogiman on 11/17/11 at 7:50

Where did the term African immigrants come into the picture, Loner? Did I read a different article on the issue? I understood they were 'talking' about "anyone" except the current corporation owner(s)..

By: dargent7 on 11/17/11 at 8:33

Most cabs I've taken (few) in Nashville, the drivers aren't American, don't speak English, and are Egyptian, Lebonnese, definitely Mid-Eastern..
In NYC, 80% are Arabs.
Driving a cab only requires eysight and a license. No brains, no language skills, no personality.
"yogi"...you should look into it.

Oh my, I made a yogi, when I spelled flee instead of flea. My bad. lol

By: BenDover on 11/17/11 at 8:43

They've set up some limit so that you have to have a minimum number of cabs in order to get operating license I believe. It's a barrier to entry designed by the established companies to inhibit competition.

The other side of the coin is that fares are controlled and capped. I guess that puts competition as a matter of the level of service (or opportunity and graft).

This is a long-time government crony relationship game because consumers rightly demand some consistency in fares so as not to get ripped off. I don't know if there's a good solution but the idea that someone must save up enough for 10 cabs before he can get a license to shuttle people around the city seems a little over-board.

By: BenDover on 11/17/11 at 8:46

Medallions in the larger cities cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars though. That's no better than having to pay the mob protection money in my book. Legalized theft.

By: Captain Nemo on 11/17/11 at 9:04

In London, England a cap driver has to know every street in the city before they are issued a permit.

By: Loner on 11/17/11 at 9:22

From the main article:

Looking to improve work conditions and financial viablity (sic), a group of cab drivers, primarily Ethiopian-American immigrants, have put forth a plan to start a new taxi company called Volunteer Taxi. Drivers who formerly worked — or perhaps currently work — at Nashville’s five existing licensed cab companies would own the company.

Last I knew, Ethiopia was in Africa. Of course, their country of origin is not terribly relevant to the issue....just wanted to silence the troll's incessant whining.

Ben Dover, if one guy owns three Nashville cab companies, competition is already dubious, just on the face of it.

If Nashville cab drivers own, insure and maintain (fuel?) their own vehicles, but operate under Solomon's logos and Solomon's permits, then you gotta wonder just what does Solomon do?

Some possibly pertinent questions:

Is Director of the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission, a political hack position? How much oversight has there been over the last few decades? When was the place last audited? Who operates the dispatch services?

Any comments on the current Director of the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission, Brian McQuistion?

By: Captain Nemo on 11/17/11 at 9:31

Loner says, "Last I knew, Ethiopia was in Africa. Of course, their country of origin is not terribly relevant to the issue....just wanted to silence the troll's incessant whining".
Most people know where Ethiopia is, unless they were educated in yogi’s youth when he was young. Then it is a haphazard attempt at knowledge at best.

As far as to keep him from whining… well yogi was born to whine.

By: yogiman on 11/17/11 at 9:43

Maybe a group of individual cab owners get together and form a co-op, which would basically be the same as Solomon seems to control.

But as the CEO, he sets their rules and "share earnings". A new co-op could set it up on a more individual scam.

By: Loner on 11/17/11 at 9:50

I Googled: taxicab licensing corruption....oh yeah, it's out there. In Washington, DC, for example, a taxicab bribery scandal was uncovered back in October, 2009....here's a snippet:

The indictments, unsealed today, allege that Syume, Leghese, and Ghirmazion, conspired to bribe the Chairperson of the District of Columbia Taxicab Commission, who was working with the government in an undercover capacity, to obtain licenses for multi-vehicle taxicab company licenses. According to the indictment, the defendants made a series of bribe payments to the Chairperson totaling approximately $220,000. If convicted, Syume, Leghese, and Ghirmazion each face up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.....“The allegations contained in these indictments are serious—describing alleged corrupt activities at the heart of our taxicab industry—and reflect our determination to root out corruption in our government,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Phillips.

For what it's worth, those charged in the DC sting operation are also Ethiopians.

We may have a nation-wide taxicab corruption problem....Sixty Minutes should dig into it? Senate hearings?

Maybe the NCP should continue sniffing around on this taxicab licensing issue....my crystalline spheres of clairvoyance indicate that Nashville, TN has a Washington, DC type of problem, when it comes to its taxicab industry and its government regulators....the spheres have been quite reliable lately...they made the call about Herman Cain's catting around months before the scandal broke.

Of course, investigative journalism in areas like this requires balls of steel...not crystal.....good luck, NCP.

When I visited Nashville, I rode the Metro buses...the taxi fares were way too expensive...now, I see why that is.

Graft looks like a food-chain....start with the minnows and work your way up the food chain....there's usually a couple of sharks at the top....swimming around in what they perceive to be a sea of impunity.

Time to drain the aquarium and start all over? Could be.

Has this board fizzled out?

By: JohnGalt on 11/17/11 at 1:27

Pretty much, since the clique has turned it into an instant messaging system mostly for members.

By: Kosh III on 11/17/11 at 1:59

Some of us got tired of yogi's incessant lies and insults regarding our Commander-in-Chief.

It doesn't help that the topics TPTB choose are often lame as well.

By: bfra on 11/17/11 at 2:32

Kosh III - Amen on both comments!

By: dargent7 on 11/17/11 at 2:33

I agree. Combine the lame "Question of the Day" with "yogi's" constant drone of "usurpers" inhabiting the W.H. and those who had lives, have moved on.
It's gotten so bad, I miss the days when Sid Vicious would threaten me and Loner with a class action lawsuit, demanding paternity tests.

By: JohnGalt on 11/17/11 at 2:34

Those "incessent lies and insults" to which you refer are, of course, any opinions differering from those held by you who consider BO god incarnate, right?

By: Kosh III on 11/17/11 at 2:38

I don't consider the President to be "god incarnate," that belongs to Jesus bar Joseph.

Heck the President wasn't my first choice, or even my second but he's better than the war-loving Republicans who despise anyone who isn't them.

And it's NOT an opinion to state that the President is not legitimately elected, it's an untruth.

By: dargent7 on 11/17/11 at 2:41

I hope Newt Gingrich has a gigantic aortic valve malfunction.
Listening to this highly educated, "brilliant Historian" blather, boviate, and bullshit, generally LIE about his receiving $1.8 million from Freddie Mac, giving only, "strategic advice", "I am not a lobbyist!", defense, is beyond vulgar.
And, to Republicans, who's IQ started behind initially to begin with, and who's moral compass was sold out decades ago to the highest bidder, he's surging in the polls.
Cain's still trying to figure out what the fuss about "Lybia" was all about.

By: dargent7 on 11/17/11 at 2:47

All this rightist's accusations that we on the Left, consider Obama to be, "The Chosen One", The Messiah", "The Annointed One" is total horseshit.
That had to of come from only Rush Limpbag.
Obama did run on the slogan, "Hope and Change". So, what?
Sounds American to me.
Bush accelerated on, "Shock & Awe"....killing thousands in the process.
You pick.

By: bfra on 11/17/11 at 3:22

Repubs thought the "truth" about Bush/Cheney were insults. But, just out & out "lies" about our present, President is basically the only way they can insult him. True, there are things I don't agree with, but look what an 8 yr. mess he is following.

By: Loner on 11/17/11 at 3:30

Galt! He hunts by ambush...he's always monitoring the action...but waits for the perfect opportunity to strike.

Once again, John Galt snipes and runs....I would like to debate the guy, but he streaks in and vanishes into the ether....he feels that he has been denied membership? Galt plays the victim card....again.

Kosh, by gosh, you ain't just a joshin'....these Up for Debate boards are a reiteration site...the main articles already have their own comment boards, why duplicate that here?

Don't get me wrong, NCP Webmaster, I appreciate this site; but we might want to try something new.

IMHO, there ought to be a free forum board, where there is no topic of the day....the posters would decide what to discuss...like an open mic...an online, real time, relatively uncensored and unmoderated regular comment board....kind of like what this Up for Debate board turns into everyday anyway.

Question, children: If I'm so wrong in my argument about Barry Soetoro's usurpation of the Oval Office, why did the E-Verify unit reject 'Barack Obama's' SS number?

And why is New Hampshire now looking into his legal eligibility? I question why they didn't look into it before.

With your 'children's' current mental capacity, if you think you will favor the nation he is making us, how about moving to China, or Russia or maybe North Korea for a few months until he gets it completed? It would be good to know what you would be coming home to.

And You're right, JohnGalt, the "select few" feel this is a self service site.

"Speaking" for myself, and perhaps budlight, I must say I understand your your ignorance by calling me a Ku Klux Klatcher. But to refurbish your ignorance, I've never been in the dumbacrap party like you and your ignorant "friends" Sorry I can't "join" yore's. It simply isn't the kind I would volunteer in to. Your ignorance apparently doesn't tell you the Ku Klux Kla[tch]n was was created, run by and is still the base of the dumbacraps of our nation. I would never be a 'gang' member with such fools.

And constantly calling me a racist? You're constantly proving your arrogant ignorance. And I thought you was a reasonably intelligent man. Sorry, I guess my 'half brain' made another mistake.

The troll's 4:14 post is a fresh* example of why "The Manure Spreader" might be an apt name for this board.

*A fresh example of the troll's stale manure, that is.

Same old "usurper" and "Barry Soetoro" BS...reminds me of the dairy air in Sherman, NY...it fertilizes the earth...or so the BS spreaders claim.

It's all udder nonsense......but I'll milk the analogy anyway.

Tell you what I'll do. Y'all put up with me until 11/6/2012 and I'll "shut up", whether said usurper wins or looses. Then y'all can have this site back to yourselves for your little 'self-friendly' 'git' togethers.

Perhaps in the meantime you can study the Constitution a little bit more and decided whether it means anything to you or should just be placed in the outhouse. Which is where it will go if Barry pulls his stunt off.
