Up for Debate: Trimming the tax hike

Monday, June 11, 2012 at 1:45am

When all is said and done, how confident are you Mayor Karl Dean's property tax increase and budget will pass as it currently looks? There are some indications the 53-cent hike will come down by at least a few pennies. What are your predictions on how successful the Metro Council will be at shaving off some of the impact of the proposed tax increase?

Yogi: "Your way of thinking"?
What does your rant have to do with Burch's article? Nothing, as usual.
I do not hate the south. But, this "southern hospitality" we from the north always heard about is a myth.
Everytime you turn around Tenn. is passing some hillbilly, backwards law taking the state back to the 1800's.
"Guns in Bars", guns in Employee parked cars(!), soon guns in parks.
"Say No to Gay", Say No to Sex Education", Say No to Evolution".
Chicken coops in backyards. The stupid list keeps expanding monthly.
I wouldn't use the word, "hate", but the entire Republican party is the vilest hypocritical group of individuals ever assembled under one roof/ tent.
You, as a "birther", exemplify that definition.

I do not think that a tax increase of any kind is justifiable from my perspective. Taxes are just too far out of line with adjacent counties. This in itself bears a lot scrutiny that does not seem to be forthcoming.

In the final analysis anything that can be done about the amount of this increase is a plus.

By: yogiman on 6/11/12 at 5:42

Please accept my humblest pardon, dargent7. I just based my opinion on your negative rants about the South.Could it be you just love our women beer than the ones you grew up with in the North but the South's basic style of life is so different?

By: Ummm... on 6/11/12 at 5:52

The Teapublicans are right- who needs taxes? Let my house burn down- who needs a fire department? Let the criminals do as they please- who needs a police force? If we get invaded by another country, so what? Better than having to pay taxes for an army. And to hell with a public school system- we want our kids to be just as ignorant as we are, thank you very much. And when the smell of all that garbage piled up in the street gets to be too much, we can just move away. I just hope when we do that we're not the car on the crumbling bridge when it falls in. Let me keep my money! I know how best to spend it! Now, how much is the cover charge at the nudie bar?

By: govskeptic on 6/11/12 at 6:15

Every proposed tax increase has a bit of padding to give cover to the
legislative branch required to pass said proposal to show their
concern and cut a few pennies! Since making sure not a single
government employee will be lost, that's always important, this
council like all others will certain not cut any more than the
bit of padding!

By: Captain Nemo on 6/11/12 at 6:26

The gov and I are on the same page. You always ask for more and then work toward the a more expectable total.

By: treehugger7 on 6/11/12 at 6:37

Ummm got it right! The shortsightedness of the TPs will harm us all. Ben Cunnigham lives in Sumner County. He needs to leave us alone! I, for one, do not want to live in a pauper state, which is what some seem to find desireable. I would like our children to be educated and able to find jobs. Nashville has greater responsibility as we are the capital city. I'm sure next week someone will want to move the capital to Sumner or Williamson county....I do not want to be part of the race to the bottom. (I suspect we on our way.) Grow up and deal with it!

By: Loner on 6/11/12 at 6:44

Good morning, Nashville.

How confident are you Mayor Karl Dean's property tax increase and budget will pass as it currently looks? There will be a tax hike, but somewhat less than the amount requested.

What are your predictions on how successful the Metro Council will be at shaving off some of the impact of the proposed tax increase? The 53 cent hike will be pared down to about 49 cents, IMO.

Whoever decided to hire the extra fifty cops using temporary stimulus money should be forced to explain their actions at this time; That decision is the primary reason that the Mayor is now begging for more public revenues....to keep the cops fat, dumb and happy.

I think that Nashville has enough cops already...they have been reduced to walking the sidewalks, sniffing the air for the fragrance of growing Cannabis.....meanwhile, murders occur nearly everyday in Music City.

Time to dump the mayor?

By: yogiman on 6/11/12 at 7:09

How about bringing your mayor down to Nashville to help them out, Loner? I'm sure he/she/'s the best in the 'good ole' USA and we don't want our capitol city put in a slop jar.

Because of the population growth, every city need more police and other employess to take care of the residents.

Consider: So many on this site talk about Antioch. I haven't been to Antioch in decades but I was born there when that area of Davidson County was all farm land.

My dad was sheriff of Sumner County in the early 1960s. He had only two deputies and the county did not support that office. His office was in the basement of the courthouse on the square back then.

How big is the sheriff's office today? How many deputies does Sumner County have today?

In my childhood, when you left the square and hit the bottom of that hill you was in the country. Gallatin goes to the river today.

By: Rasputin72 on 6/11/12 at 7:09

Ummm.......You are right on target this morning. I would prefer a "War Lord" system where privateers rule every gated community through private donations. This would take care of everything the 53% who pay a federal income tax would need. Then the 47% who pay no federal income tax can "root hog or die" as the saying goes.

My guess is that this support of the underclass population is a huge reason there is so much difference betwwen the tax rate in adjacent counties and Davidson County.

By: Loner on 6/11/12 at 7:12

I left a comment on Mike Burch's column too....Mike has to be one of the more courageous professional writers out their today.....the Helen Thomas effect is strong across the fruited plain...any criticism of Israel, Judaism, the Bible, Zionism and the US-Israel "special relationship" is fraught with danger to one's career.....Helen Thomas was excoriated for telling the truth.

By: BenDover on 6/11/12 at 7:12

Ummmm is just as melodramatic as Burch.

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 8:05

Ben, I've noticed that if you move a few words around, Burch's latest CP column, is the same as his first. With the exception of coat hangers.

By: dargent7 on 6/11/12 at 8:14

L'ner: Tommy Cong has announced he has prostate cancer.
Says he's going to treat it with only cannabis oil.
Didn't say whether he ingests it or rubs in on his privates.
I figure you'd know where it applies.

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 8:17

Once again, the game is rigged. Mayor Dean has the votes in the council, they so want to stay in Dean's clique, very fashionable these days in Nashville. They'll reduce the increase a few pennies, to demonstrate barebones.

By: JohnGalt on 6/11/12 at 8:26

Last Friday I asked the police chief to his face why they didn't plan for how to pay the extra fifty cops hired with the grant after it ran out. His response was a blank stare and a big grin.

By: Loner on 6/11/12 at 8:30

Off to Northport, MI...Army buddy reunion....later!

By: BenDover on 6/11/12 at 8:40

Have fun Loner.

Hey slacker, remember a few weeks ago when we were discussing Kennedy's ex killing herself? Did you read what was really going on? She was nuttier than a fruitcake.

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 9:18

I just read it gdiafante, very sad indeed.

By: gdiafante on 6/11/12 at 9:29

We could save a lot of time and effort by just putting the entire world on Xanax...I think we need it.

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 9:36

I've been saying for years, we should bring back opium dens.

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 9:38

Pacquiao wuz robbed!

By: BenDover on 6/11/12 at 10:11

I didn't see it slack. Bad call?

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 10:53

Ben, IMO Pacquiao dominated.. but I'm a Manny fan. Pacquiao might have gotten by one, with his fight with Marquez.

By: gdiafante on 6/11/12 at 11:48

He was robbed. Boxing's a joke anyway, but man...

Ms. Kennedy called Robert Kennedy, Jr. a "philanderer and a sex addict".
What the F*** did she think she was marrying into? The Osmonds? The Cowsills?
As a Kennedy, you file for divorce, sue him blind, turn the other cheek, and date a 25 year old something to get back at him. She was very attractive at 52 years old, and rich.
She hangs herself with 4 children all orphaned? "Yeah, my mom hanged herself..." No guilt there.
Junior Seau had 4 children also. But, he had 1,000 concushions. Kennedy only had one from her head hitting the bedboard on several occassions.

By: dargent7 on 6/11/12 at 1:08

Front page of USA Today: Madonna. Do I win a prize?
Read The 50th anniversary of The Beatles in USA Today.
Lively discussion.
Ann Coulter and I attended U-M at roughly the same time.
She in Law school, myself excelling in Animal Husbandry and Morturary Science.
I caught a glimpse of her once on campus. Thought it was Marlyn Manson in drag.
Tried to get an autograph. Has an adam's apple the size of a cantelope.

By: yogiman on 6/11/12 at 1:51

Boxing may be a joke today, gdiafarte, But it sure wasn't a joke in my early years. I never heard of a "put up deal" in my short career in it.

By: gdiafante on 6/11/12 at 2:02

Well, if you were a boxer, that explains your brain damage.

By: bfra on 6/11/12 at 2:27

yogi's been brain dead for so long, he thinks he has done anything mentioned, only better! Hee Haw!

By: Captain Nemo on 6/11/12 at 2:59

Never hearing of a "put up deal", is very naïve or another lie.

By: slacker on 6/11/12 at 3:24

yogi was on the prison boxing team. He once fought Charlie Manson. Charlie looked at yogi and said: ''is it hot in here, or am I crazy as hell?''

By: Captain Nemo on 6/11/12 at 3:39

slacker, that would explain Manson’s madness.

By: yogiman on 6/11/12 at 5:41

Good joke, slacker.

Sorry though, I wasn't allowed to box in prison. I boxed in high school back in the 40s and went into club boxing after my school tenure.

Are you old enough to know anything about club boxing? Didn't think so, because you act like a child so much. You just haven't matured mentally yet. But hang in there, you might make in some day.

By: bfra on 6/11/12 at 6:35

yogi's new saying "hang in there". He has been hanging so long, he thinks everybody else has. Just monkeys yogi & you!
