Up for Debate: Vanderbilt feels policy pressure

Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 11:42pm

How much of a negative effect do you think Vanderbilt University's "all-comers" policy has had and could continue to have on the school's reputation, as well as fundraising efforts? Is the university powerful enough to stand its ground? Or will it eventually be forced to readjust its stance on the policy?

For someone champing the right for free speech and letting private institutes run their on business, the GOP seems to be sticking there nose into everyone’s business.

Once again the Teapublicans talk the talk of "less intrusive government," but this is how they "walk the walk." Hypocrisy, thy name is GOP.

It is said that those that live in a tea bag will never learn the true meaning of freedom.

Dick Clark had a stroke 5 years ago and couldn't even talk. They still wanted him to do the New Year's Eve bash in New York. It was absurd.
I watched American Bandstand every Sat. I think David Cassidy and the Cowsills were on it. Not sure. I was starting to drop acid around that time.
My own dad died at 83. Some times it's just time to go meet and greet with Jesus.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 6:23

I agree Darge. It was uncomfortable to watch/hear him on the New Year's show after the stroke. They should have just let him retire...maybe it was his decision...but you could barely understand him. I'd rather remember him for introducing lyp-syncing artists and the 25K Pyramid.

Good morning, Nashville.

To the Topic: Once again, Tennessee's own"4-G" network, ( God, Guns, Gays & "Guvmint ) is getting media attention.

The Tea Baggers have hijacked the TN Legislature and the TN Governorship too....the result has been an embarrassing series of an anti-science, anti-welfare, anti-choice, anti-Muslim, anti-union, anti GLBT and some other "anti-" crusades.

The only active "pro-" programs are the pro-gun and pro-Creationism agendas.

Sometimes, I think that Abe Lincoln screwed up...he should have let those Southern Christian bigots go their own way....the former confederacy states are a national shame and embarrassment.

Captain Nemo...I'm a known sax offender...no need to bring that up here, is there?

Long Live Dick Clark! Long Live Rock & Roll!

I distinctly remember watching American Bandstand in the early 60's...in particular, I remember , "The Stroll".....enjoy!

Once you let the cat out of the bag you then have a free cat. However the GOP does not like free cats or anything else to be something other than what they think should be.

Sorry Loner it was a misplace musical note. Good morning!

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 6:35

Actually, I think they may have a point...about the policy being ridiculous...but it's really none of the state's business.

Isn't the point of a club to have members with common beliefs? Why would a Christian club embrace athiests? Why would a Muslim club embrace Hindus? Why is there an incessant need to include everyone in things that were meant to be exclusive?

PC run amuck...

By: Captain Nemo on 4/19/12 at 6:36

As hard as it was to watch Dick Clark the last few years, he would probably have died sooner if he could not preform one TV.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/19/12 at 6:38

With out the sharing of ideas, no one will learn from others.

GOP credo-

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 6:43

This started with legitimate concerns...blacks or women being excluded...and has snowballed into any person who is rejected crying foul and suing to be allowed in. It's a joke.

Think about it...the Boy Scouts were sued to let in a girl...I can't wait for a little boy to sue the Girl Scouts...but why shouldn't I be able to sell cookies to, mommy?

By: Captain Nemo on 4/19/12 at 6:43

Just like them there Vanderbilt LIBBERRLLS, haters of Christians WNATING to make us bring in sinner and hear our side of the coin.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/19/12 at 6:49

You have a good point there, gdia. I am not sure what to think myself and I would love to hear both sides of it. But the big question I have does the government have the right to interfere?

By: dargent7 on 4/19/12 at 6:50

This just in...the hooker who ratted out the Secret Service for "not being paid", wanted the going rate, $800. The shmoe offered $30.00.

I don't think they do, but if VU gets any federal funding, I'm sure the Feds think that gives them the right.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 6:51

I think that any club that enjoys official university sanction (blessing), should be open to all students.

If the Born-again bigots want their own Born-Again Bigot Club, fine...but don't attach the Vanderbilt name to it...OK?

Same goes for any Islamic Jihadist Clubs and Militant Zionist Clubs....same goes for the Papists too......let the Mormon heretics start their own club too....my only objection is official university support and approval of organized bigotry and xenophobia.

Politics and religion do not mix well.....religion and education do not mix well either...in my humble opinion....I prefer secular governance and secular education....but I'm just an old fashioned kind of guy....the new wave sweeping over the USA is pro-theocracy - Judeo-Christian, that is....the End Times believers have hijacked many of the statehouses in our republic....their self-fulfilling prophecies are official state government policy.

Holy Wars Suck.

This isn't just for religious clubs, Loner. Maybe I want to start a club for guys with male pattern baldness...the last thing the members would want is a bunch of newbies with thick manes running around...bragging about how they don't need thickening conditioners...how they don't have to wear a hat out on the sun...

By: Kosh III on 4/19/12 at 6:58

"Sometimes, I think that Abe Lincoln screwed up...he should have let those Southern Christian bigots go their own way....the former confederacy states are a national shame and embarrassment."

No, Lincoln should have had Lee, Forrest, Davis and all the others hung for treason.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 7:02

Yeah, Vandy is in cahoots with TN state government...just like the UT and its CBER programs....that funding gives government the power to write curricula, set agendas, determine priorities and regulate university programs....Vandy, UT and the others could give up sucking on the government teat and go their own way...but don't hold your breath for that to happen....corporate welfare extends to the institutions of higher learning too....they too are addicted to spending "other people's money"....they are Institutional Welfare Queens.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 7:04

That's why Lincoln was a great leader, Kosh. He realized that the nation needed to heal. There was already enough animocity from the South to last another 160 years...imagine if the North had started to execute the leaders...

IMO, had Lincoln lived, reconstruction would have probably been better and who knows, maybe the South wouldn't still have that chip on their shoulder.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 7:07

Kosh, I agree on that...the North washed its hands of the mess after the war and let the KKK terrorists and the carpetbaggers "reconstruct" the South. That federal neglect lasted for over one hundred years....Jim Crow was not rousted until the 1960's....even now, residual Christian white supremacist attitudes thrive in the former confederacy.

By: Rasputin72 on 4/19/12 at 7:14

Vanderbilt will perservere until the day that money is outlawed and replaced by "soylent green."

The tighter the noose brought about by the underclass the envious class and the liberals the faster the demise of the United States.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 7:15

The South never fully "healed", because a lot of the original decay was left in place and merely plastered over....as Washington turned its attention elsewhere, the decay spread beneath the surface. The South never repented and most Southerners still support, honor and respect the values of the defunct CSA and its treasonous armies.

Lincoln should have remained calm and said to the South, "Good riddance." He panicked and made some terrible decisions....he was only human after all. I no longer regard Abe Lincoln as a brilliant American hero...he was a tragic figure, not a heroic one, IMO.

The Rasp continues with his Dickensian schtick....it's no longer funny....but that's all he's got...or so it appears.

Truth be known, the Rasp is probably a homeless wino posting from the public library....working his fantasy life to the max, online.

By: Rasputin72 on 4/19/12 at 7:21

KOSH, If Hill had brought his troops up as Lee asked at Gettysburg you would have been arrested for treason for your comments of this morning.

We are all here over the last 2000 years for possibly the most insignificant event that changed history.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 7:22

Washington turned their back on the South because there was resentment in the North too. Lincoln had devised a plan for reconstruction where the Federal government was quite active and involved. When he was killed, all bets were off. Johnson, and then others, lost their will (or willingly abandoned it for political purposes) and the stage was set.

But if you think a scorched Earth policy...lay waste to an entire region and then walk away, is good policy, you should have no problem with our current wars.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 7:24

Had Lee and the South adopted George Washington's revolutionary war tactic of simply outlasting the will of the opponent to keep fighting, we wouldn't be the U.S., we'd be a series of small republics.

By: dargent7 on 4/19/12 at 7:24

" 2000 years..." ? I think America is just shy of 230 years.

Great, forward thinking lawmakers we have here.
"Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard..."

By: Rasputin72 on 4/19/12 at 7:34

giafante......An excellent observation! I am not so sure what effect these small republics would have had on the outcome of WWII. I can however see that the splintered politics and social mores of this country could lead to an attempt at creating smaller republics.

dargent7....The events of the last 2000 years certainly allowed the United States to exist for 230 years.

By: dargent7 on 4/19/12 at 7:35

Calling it a, "homicide and assult". At 8 weeks? Has anyone seen "yogi" at 8 weeks?

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 7:39

If GD is intimating that I supported Sherman's March To The Sea, he's wrong....today, that campaign would be termed a "war crime"...collective punishment etc. It was a counter-productive action, IMO.

We can only speculate, of course....If President Lincoln had not acted in haste and anger, the war might never have occurred. Some 618,000 Americans died in the 4-year war...thousands of amputees....hundreds if not thousands blinded....many of the others were driven to madness, alcoholism or suicide....for what? To hold the union together? The price was too high, Mr. Lincoln.

The North could have responded by completely cutting-off the cotton trade, by way of US Navy blockade alone...the naval blockade was working...it should have been given a chance to succeed before committing troops to battlefield confrontations. Once blood was spilled, both sides hardened their positions....compromise was impossible.

We have the benefit of hindsight....folks at the time were whipped into a frenzy of hate....and that was BEFORE right-wing TV & radio.

Both sides used their churches as recruiting stations....Holy Wars Suck.

Got a link to a source on that, Darge?

Snippet:

At eight weeks:

All major organs and external body structures have begun to form.
Your baby's heart beats with a regular rhythm.
The arms and legs grow longer, and fingers and toes have begun to form.
The sex organs begin to form.
The eyes have moved forward on the face and eyelids have formed.
The umbilical cord is clearly visible.
At the end of eight weeks, your baby is a fetus and looks more like a human. Your baby is nearly 1 inch long and weighs less than one-eighth ounce.

Source (includes pictures):

http://womenshealth.gov/pregnancy/you-are-pregnant/stages-of-pregnancy.cfm#first

Notice how this government run site refers to the 8-week-old fetus as "your baby"...sounds like right-wing spin to me.

"Why is there an incessant need to include everyone in things that were meant to be exclusive?"

Like heaven? Only for members of YOUR denomination, according to many fundamentalists.

Fundamentalist Christians often confuse a "war on religion" for simply not getting their way.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/19/12 at 7:54

If the south had won we might not be here at all. France, England, Spain, Mexico would divide us into bit-size tidbits.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/19/12 at 7:56

Bingo global_citizen.

By: dargent7 on 4/19/12 at 7:56

Loner: Then at maturity, send them off to a worthless, 100% falsified war(s), and have them killed, maimed, crippled, and come back and are so screwed up, they commit suicide.
Take your pick.
I say...at 5 weeks after conception, and verified "you're preganat", make a F*** decision.
Make it legal. Get it done.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 7:58

War is hell, Loner. Had the North instituted a blockade, as you suggest, do you not think the South would have reacted with force? The path towards civil war was laid in 1787. There was no way around it.

By: dargent7 on 4/19/12 at 8:10

War isn't "Hell'. War isn't an option.
You want something that isn't yours? You're afraid of someone who isn't like you?
You want to 'spank" them? Fine. Economic sanctions. It will take a while. But, all we all share is time, 24/7.
Ground wars and invasions/ occupations is SO wrong.
Christ...in 2003 with Iraq and Afghanistan, isn't that a least bit obvious?
It's 2012 for God's sake.

By: Rasputin72 on 4/19/12 at 8:12

Captain Nemo........A guess like yours is as good as any other when comes to how these small republics were formed......The one thing I do know is that the eleven states that seceeded from the union would have continued to be an alliance of some sort.

The reasons still exist.
