Up for Debate: Vanderbilt feels policy pressure

Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 12:42am

How much of a negative effect do you think Vanderbilt University's "all-comers" policy has had and could continue to have on the school's reputation, as well as fundraising efforts? Is the university powerful enough to stand its ground? Or will it eventually be forced to readjust its stance on the policy?

Agents provocateur must love this "all-comers" policy... Federal, state and local law enforcement under-cover agents, Homeland Security agents, the FBI, the CIA, the Mossad etc. all welcome the all-comers policy....I see the membership of all the groups swelling, as well-paid undercover agents infiltrate the various clubs....more corporate welfare for the government's own agencies, I suppose.

I see the method to the madness now....those sorts of infiltration have been undeniably enabled....the opening will be exploited...no doubt about it.

Crap! No cummerbund! Hey Loner, can I get by with a 70's era white crushed velvet clip on bow tie?

By: slacker on 4/19/12 at 10:33

brrrrk, just show up wearing your ''Speedo'' you'll be admitted.

By: Rasputin72 on 4/19/12 at 10:34

Captain Nemo......It would appear that you have built a belief about the ineptitude of the eleven confederate states based upon what you would LIKE to believe. What I believe and obviously it is a moot point other than the discussion between you and I is that cotton, slaves and military might would be the strength of the Confederacy. Remember that the North had the industrial factories and the South had the Generals.

The Confederacy would probably be the Israel of today back in its time. I don't think Military takeover would be an issue.

What I do know is that Barack Hussein Obama would not be sticking his hands in my pockets to provide income for the unproductive.

I see, Ben, it was my spittle, not a rabid reactionary foaming incident.....do you need a towel?

Your tirade against President Obama had lots of froth....made my latte look wimpy.

I Googled it...let's look where the markets were on the day Obama was sworn in and now:

Dow Jones Close 1/20/09 - Stock Market Closing Prices
Stock Market Closing Prices - 1/20/09

Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 7949.09 Down 332.13
Nasdaq Stock Market Close - 1440.86 Down 88.47
S&P 500 Close - 805.23 Down 44.89

And now, let's look at what the market looks like these days:

Dow Jones Close 4/10/12 - Stock Market Closing Prices
Stock Market Closing Prices - 4/10/12

Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJIA ) Close - 12715.93 Down 213.66

Ben, it looks like President Obama saved the nation from total financial collapse, after the Bush-Cheney meltdown in the fall of 2008. On this basis alone he deserves another second term....especially if Romney is the alternative.

Ben's argument that Obama is an inept, corrupt, anti-business, anti-capitalism, socialist does not square with the cold hard facts.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 10:56

Rasputin wrote, ""Remember that the North had the industrial factories and the South had the Generals".....yeah, the South had the treasonous traitor Generals...no doubt about that fact...some of West Point's finest reneged on their oaths of office...very shameful...they gave a false sense of hope to the renegade white supremacists....Lee should have been hung...Jeff Davis too...IMO.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 10:58

Brrrk...Slack....there is no dress code at Loner's All-Cummers Club...we do require the use of condoms....and shoes....sexy shoes....other than that....do your thing.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:00

"Cummerbund"...I Googled it...it's German slang for "fudge-packing".

By: brrrrk on 4/19/12 at 11:04

Loner,

The same can be said about the gun issue. Despite all the caterwauling from the right on the 2nd Amendment and what this president "would do", there has been no piece of legislature either passed or pushed by this administration that restricts gun ownership. In fact, gun ownership has become less restricted under this administration.

But on the other hand, we've seen state by state what the extreme right is willing to do... but we're not supposed to pay attention to that because that's not what those politicians said they were going to do.

I smell hypocrisy.....

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:04

In Orleans Co. there is a tiny cross-roads hamlet called, "Hindsburg"...it's on the Hindsburg Road. Apparently, the place was first settled by a German Ass-worshiping cult...the members had been expelled from the fatherland....they found fantasy fulfillment in Orleans County, New York....now you know the rest of the story.

By: slacker on 4/19/12 at 11:07

Loner, I fear that brrrk and his friends will join your club, call for an election, and oust the Lone One as Prez...

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:07

Hmmmm...sniff - sniff...I too smell the stink of GOP hypocrisy, Brrrrk. Smells just like old money.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:11

That could happen, Slack....if Brrrrk and a friend joined the club, they would represent 66% of the membership...my reign of pleasure could be short-lived....it's party time!

By: slacker on 4/19/12 at 11:11

brrrk, so true. Obama and Eric Holder, even want to arm the Mexican's.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:13

Actually, there will be no democracy in the All-Cummers Club...we will use the tried & true feudalism model as our model....I will be the King...everybody else vassals....nice and simple....a time-honored approach to management.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:15

Yeah, the AG joined the Cartel Club...all-comers are welcome there...as long as they come with lawyers, guns or money.

By: brrrrk on 4/19/12 at 11:16

Last night I was listening to a radio program on which they were interviewing a reporter that had attended the NRA convention in St Louis.

He told a story about how he got on a mini-bus headed for the convention with a bunch of other people. During the ride to the convention, a person on the bus (who the reporter said he later found out was a lawyer for a gun manufacturer) stood up and told the following joke.

What do JFK, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama have in common?

The answer: Nothing.......... yet.

According to the reporter everyone on the bus howled.

Zevon Rules!

Here's the group live in 1982...doing "Roland, the headless Thompson gunner", one of my favorites:

That video makes me feel really ancient....where is the voice of protest today?

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 11:54

Brrrrk, this time around, they'll make it look like an accident?

I do not think that our closest ally, Israel, will wait out another four years of BHO. Realistically, Romney's chances are quite slim....the Israelis know this.

Those guys are the snuff-job pros...since 1945...when they snuffed Count Bernadotte.

Nowadays, they can use a cyber weapon to disable a critical piece of the President's security network, for example.

The days of using a schmuck, like Oswald or Sirhan Sirhan are over....they could use a false flag terrorist attack to do the job and get a revenge bonus...more war..more profit.

While some Secret Service guys are getting BJ's or whatever, some Mossad agent, or a lone wolf religious fanatic, or a bona fide Jihadist could attach one of those sticky bombs to the President's means of transportation....Al Qaeda or some new Islamic enemy would get the blame and/or take the credit.

Holy Wars Suck.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 11:55

I've heard that joke, brrrrk. With the partisan venom that keeps coming from both sides, I'm surprised that Loner's prediction, and that joke, hasn't come true.

Let's see...irrational hatred towards politicians plus record breaking gun ownership...yeah, It's just a matter of time.

By: slacker on 4/19/12 at 12:00

Loner..careful. You'll be summoned with ''The Nuge'' for a sit-down with the SS.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 12:15

I hope that my snuff scenarios are just that....scenarios.

I am not predicting that this will happen...I pray that it will not happen. But something like that could very well happen. The consequences could be catastrophic. The ripple effect would be enormous.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 12:19

Well, with Giffords, it already has come true. I forgot to add the increase in mental illness into my equation.

We're screwed.

By: BenDover on 4/19/12 at 12:38

Why should religious groups be discriminated against by the school?

By: slacker on 4/19/12 at 12:49

Ben, is it because most of them like Pat Boone's version of ''tutti frutti''?

By: BenDover on 4/19/12 at 12:50

Loner, you know the market crashed from a high of around 14,500 in 2008 on the promise of electing our first overtly socialist president to these United States.

Anyone paying attention to him saying he was going to bankrupt the coal industry, put a carbon surcharge on the air we breath and every step of fossil energy consumption; who was promising free healthcare and every other socialist benefit he could to the people at the expense of the evil rich; and who said we should double the capital gains tax rate out of 'fairness'... yes it could be expected that the sh*t would hit the fan as it became evident that this guy might be president... and even more-so when it became the certainty and as it turned out he really believed it all and wasn't just spouting a bunch of populist rhetoric to get elected.

Any market recovery has been despite this guy's efforts not because of them.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 12:53

Ben, if all the official Vandy clubs are being held to the same all-comers policy, I don't see where the religion-related clubs are being singled out for attack.

I can see where an all-comers policy is ripe for exploitation by agents provocateur, trolls, knuckleheads and the "authorities".

The policy needs a re-think, IMO....I'm sure it was well-intentioned...but it could lead to hellish consequences..... freedom from infiltration trumps a lot of cards here.

In my UU church, an all-comers policy has been in effect for a long, long time....I "infiltrated" with no trouble at all.....give it a shot....no need to go undercover...all who come are welcome....that's standard UU policy.

By: slacker on 4/19/12 at 12:57

As I understand it, a gay person was kicked out of some Christian group, and complained. Vandy responded with the policy.

By: BenDover on 4/19/12 at 12:58

No, loner, one of the chorus was singing the 'ban religious organizations' ballad... that's what I was talking about. I think you, too, were even singing in, though I could be mistaken.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 1:17

Ben has that well-worn rant down pat: "Loner, you know the market crashed from a high of around 14,500 in 2008 on the promise of electing our first overtly socialist president to these United States."

According to Ben's theory, the specter of an Obama presidency rightly spooked Lehman Bros, Wall Street and Main Street too. The fat cats and the scaredy cats saw a boogie man and they grabbed their cash and ran....Ben still thinks that taking the money and running was the smart thing to do.

Here, as rebuttal, is a Sports Analogy:

Ben, that's the same old explanation for how and why Bush & Cheney fumbled the ball...and we lost all that economic yardage....the instant replays are clear, Bush dropped the ball - bad snap from center...our new QB has moved the ball down field...no need to change the signal caller...the snap-taker....no need to change the snapper....Mitt Romney hasn't taken a snap since his Massachusetts Ivy League QB days....we have the venerable Joe "Follicles" Biden on the bench, as the back-up QB....we have momentum, old Mo on our side....this is just half-time....Barrack "No Drama" Obama's gonna open up a six-pack of Whup-ass in the second half.....stay tuned....now get a beer.

The state is sticking its nose in the business of a school that is sticking its nose in the business of student organizations and only the first and last are wrong? In what quantum universe does that make sense? Either everyone is wrong for limiting freedoms or no everyone is allowed. Picking and choosing based on your flawed sense of who I like most is wrong on every level.

Actually the specter of BO was just a strong catalyst... the economy was already doing a delicate balancing act around the sub-prime mortgage bubble due to activist regulatory authority exercised under the CRA, artificially low prime rates, and loose lending practices encouraged by Fannie and Freddie; among other things.

TARP stopped the run on the banks though.

Then Obama, Pelosi and Reid blew the half trillion dollars in TARP repayments from the banks on pork salad for the 2010 mid-terms.

Now we sit with around $4,000,000,000,000 in debt over where we should be right now because the senate hasn't passed a budget in 3 years (and that's the way they like it)... and because in the two years they did have both houses of congress and the Whitehouse, the Democrats expanded the bureaucracy and entitlements with abject reckless abandon.

And all you guys sitting around in willful denial can do is sing, "It's George Bush's fault!"... and "Republicans are racist, sexist, homophobic meanies!!!"

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 1:51

Loner, you know the market crashed from a high of around 14,500 in 2008 on the promise of electing our first overtly socialist president to these United States.

Wrong. The market crashed when McCain was leading the polls. And honestly, if you believe that absolute BS, then you must believe that there were no inherent problems within our economy and the global markets.

The complete irrationality of some educated people is mind-boggling.

By: BenDover on 4/19/12 at 1:55

Actually I'm much closer to right than you imagine, gd. The market isn't defined by one day swings but by the trend-line all through the election process... up to and including the actual election result. The S & P 500 is inversely proportionate to Obama's Intrade numbers.

By: Loner on 4/19/12 at 1:56

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 1:58

I agree, those who solely blame Bush are misguided and almost as bad as those who whine about Obama. Both are completely in denial.

By: gdiafante on 4/19/12 at 2:06

Well, considering you claim that Obama is in bed with Wall Street, why would they panic to have him elected? Your argument makes completely no sense.
