Up for Debate: What type of transit should the Broadway-West End corridor get?

What type of transit would you rather see along the Broadway-West End corridor, bus rapid transit or a streetcar?

Take advantage of the parking lanes on the sides and run buses up those strips. Once that service is doing well and demand requires it, maybe do some of that silly station stuff the Portland lovers want. Scratch that, expand bus services to the rest of Nashville that will not require the long trip to downtown. Forget the sill decorate planters and train-like stops for buses. Save the money that would go to the luxuries and use it for everyone.

By: dargent7 on 12/13/11 at 5:15

Light rail. Something like at Disneyland and Disneyworld. Both are about the same size as West End to East End. Then, when more gunfights break out in bars....Dead End.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 5:18

There will be some that will think that there is no need for any improvement to getting around Nashville. Cars are the only way to get around. Care to make a guess at which one of the posters that will be?

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 5:26

Bullet proof glass the windows, will take some of the gun fire from the bars. It is the rockets coming from the bars that concern me.

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 5:35

Good morning, Nashville!

Rails are a pain in the @ss for motorcycles and cars to cross and once they are laid down, it is very difficult to change the route(s)....streetcar-type rail is old technology...streetcars may look nostalgic and "San Francisco-esque", but rubber-tired buses are the only way to go.....cheaper and better.

Watch for kickbacks, graft etc. from competing parties to Metro decision-makers on a deal like this one...it is ripe for corruption.

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 5:44

Light rail is like clean coal....oxymoronic. Go with regular buses...problem solved.
Shall we go off topic now, or later? This board is rubber-tired, we can take it anywhere, we do not have to stay on the rails...what's your pleasure?

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 5:55

Gunfighter hops off the light rail streetcar and walks into a gay piano bar......

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 6:02

…he asks the bartender. “Is the Albany?”

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 6:11

Not bad, Cap'n Nemo....I miss Slacker and House_of_pain....and the running gay piano bar gag....we worked that thing.

Here's a hot cut paste snippet...seems like Dick Cheney is second-guessing the President, once again...maybe Dick is going to be the GOP savior and run for POTUS?...here's the CNN snippet:

Cheney accuses President Obama of failing to act on downed drone

Former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney says President Obama failed to take appropriate action to protect American spy technology when a CIA drone went down in Iran. In an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett, Mr. Cheney said the downed drone, which is believed to have landed largely intact, should never have been allowed to fall into the hands of the Iranian government. "The right response would have been...to go in immediately after it had gone down and destroy it," Cheney said. "I was told the president had three options on his desk. He rejected all of them."

The interview will be aired tonight at 7 EST...I think that we should strap Cheney to a Tomahawk missile and fire that A-hole into the area where the drone is being held....give him a cell phone and binoculars and call it a recon mission.

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 6:18

Somebody close to the President is leaking sensitive, if not classified information to Dick Cheney? Obama needs to ferret out the traitor....probably a member of the joint chiefs....somebody needs to be fired for losing the Sentinel and whoever leaked these details to Cheney needs to be fired....the President is not being well served, IMO.

To run a "rail system" from Belle Meade to East Nashville is kinda absurd.
Belle Meade homes cost $3.+million, they have their own Police force and everything they need is right there or in Green Hills, 2 miles away. All drive Mercedes, BMW, Porches, Lexus.
No way will anyone West of Vanderbilt take a street car, rail, downtown.
Maybe college students would use it, but not locals.
To a Titans game, which is 4 months of the year.
It's only 5 miles from Belle Meade to downtown.
I lived in Del Mar.CA (similar to Belle Meade), which was 25 miles from downtown San Diego. Qualcum Stadium was 15 miles south.
Nashville is too small to require a rail system. Buses are for the un-employed.
Maybe street cars like a novelty act? In any event, cars will rule.

I thought this was a newspaper--but every story seems to be old---where is the "new"?new stories? It's the same old sh**. Guess I'll go to the fish wrapper if everything is a retread.

By: bfra on 12/13/11 at 7:46

Loner - You probably have it right on the kickbacks & graft, etc.! Something smells for our spendthrift mayor not to go with the biggest, best, most costly idea. That is usually his MO, regardless whether it is the best idea or not.

By: dargent7 on 12/13/11 at 7:53

If Dean can get a Federal grant for $165. million to build SOMETHING, he'd be negligent NOT to try and spend it.
After all, that's what politicians do.

By: Kosh III on 12/13/11 at 8:00

Why does it cost 136 million for one line?

The BRT on Gallatin Rd was 800,000 for each hybrid bus, they run 6 daily on the line. Plus the shelters. Call it 5 million total.

Surely it does not cost 131 million just to designate one lane each way as bus only?

Metro, State and Vandy employees use the bus system in large numbers. As much as 1/3 of state employees use it regularly.
Jeff said
"train-like stops for buses. Save the money that would go to the luxuries and use it for everyone."

Those shelters are not a luxury!
Clearly you have never stood under one at 6am in 12 degree weather.

By: bfra on 12/13/11 at 8:03

d7 - What I read, best "chance" to get Federal funding. But with Dean's record, even if we get this Federal funding, what guarantees that it well be used for what it is intended?

By: sidneyames on 12/13/11 at 8:32

sidneyames Message for Yogi: Hey Yogi, hope you're having a good day. How about those Denver Broncos? Mmmmmmm! Must be that quarterback. Funny how when he's winning no one on this site is yacking about how he can't play football. Oh well.

Back to the subject: mass transit. Yeah, it will be a help to us in Antioch, but then we're not on that rail line, are we?

Oh heck!

By: yogiman on 12/13/11 at 8:38

"Grant money" is nothing more than our tax money being spread out to keep local governments under control. You know, robbing from Peter to pay Paul.

And it makes a lot of profits for 'political friends' who are in business building anything.

Why are government contracts more expensive than civilian contracts of the same category?

By: judyboodo@yahoo.com on 12/13/11 at 8:44

Re-posted from the first story,
Karl Dean, aka the consultants Mayor, has another money scheming plan to enrich our lives. Good, bad, or indifferent the bottom line is money. “We’ve been working with consultants, looking where the best chances are to get federal funding,”. The Federal money tap is about to be turned off people. We have to quit looking to Washington to fund local dreams. If the people of Nashville want it then we can pay for it! Lower my Federal taxes and convince me to pay for it locally. Is it worth more local sales tax? Is it worth more property tax? Put it to a vote. Then see how enticing this kind of idea is. That is the real test. Just like LP field and unlike the MCC.

By: yogiman on 12/13/11 at 8:45

Having a great day, sidneyames. I'm still breathing and having a great time trying to educate our fellow Americans on our "Guvmunt". But as you know, it's hard to get through those thick skulls into those pea sized brains.

First lesson for today: www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=375625. They might learn something before the sun rises too high.

Have a great day, y'all.

You're waking up to the point how fast our government is becoming socialist, judyboodo. The next mode will be communism.

With your backing of the usurper in office I hope you are ready.

By: judyboodo@yahoo.com on 12/13/11 at 9:01

I beg your pardon Yogi, please show me where I have seemed to give you the mistaken idea that I've ever supported the current POTUS.

By: BigPapa on 12/13/11 at 9:03

Some form of mass transit would be nice, but it needs to be accessible, cost effective, and "time effective". Back when gas got up to $4 a gallon I looked at taking the bus and it turned a 30 min car ride into a 2 hr commute. My time is worth more than the extra cost of the gas, even at $5 gal.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 9:08

The bus service is for the maids of Belle Mead not the denizens of Belle Mead.

By: dargent7 on 12/13/11 at 9:09

The bottom line in Washington, is everyone, Politicians, wants a BIG peice of the pie for their contituents.
"Bridges to Nowhere...", "Hog farming", sexual appitites of gnats...who cares?
If Dean can get a 100.+ million for a "rapid transit system', get it.
What's he supposed to do? Act like Gandhi and become a monk and refuse government assistance, based on "principle"?
The mayors of Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, will be more than happy to take our share and spread it around their states. You can bet on it.

By: BenDover on 12/13/11 at 9:13

Obama's an idiot if he had a shot on taking out the drone and didn't take it.

I see also he's taking credit for a democratic Iraq... the same Iraq he lobbied vehemently to abandon to certain chaos, civil war and disaster in '07.

By: judyboodo@yahoo.com on 12/13/11 at 9:21

That kind of thinking d7 is what perpetuates the financial mess we have in this country now. This is why the Repubs are doing so well. Giving to much of your money to the central government to be doled out at their leisure is a bad idea. It just gives the power to people who don't produce anything of substance. It's got to stop or we will run out of money. It's just buying votes. Money is power. Keep it for yourself.

The paradigm of politics in Washington will NOT change in our lifetime.
Lobbyists run the government because they keep the Congress in a job that is nothing more than window dressing and bullshit.
Just as soon as these virgin Congressmen and women gain access to Washington and see how money is really made (insider trading, A-ok), and how real power is attained and kept, they change their tune, ie., LIE.
Why else would someone, already a millionaire, spend $200. million of their own money to make $180,000. a year?
Romney's willing to spend $500. million to make $400,000.
As is fatso, Gingrich.

The only comments I have read from you to, or about me, has only been in a negative fashion. Was I misreading them?

My goal on this site has been to show "Barack Obama"'s usurpation of the Oval Office. But it seems the bulk of this site are Democrats and they accept the man in office whether he is in there legally or illegally simply based on party.

Be that the case, I've got some news for you: Barry Soetoro is a Democrat in name only. He has made too many mistakes showing himself being in the office illegally.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 9:43

My goal in life is to turn every right thinking person in idiots.

Nemo - Isn't that yogi's motto, so he could have something in common with other people?

By: yogiman on 12/13/11 at 10:13

The one thing in common I would like with my fellow American citizens is a president sitting in that office legally. We don't have one today and there is too many people so willing to accept someone in that office who is there illegally.

If he was in that office legally, don't you think "Barack Obama" would readily agree to show his papers to prove it?

And actually, you and your fellow posters are vehemently supporting this usurper.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 10:16

If yogi has any motto or thoughts, you can bank on it not being his. He is the biggest idiot.

A BIG LOL brrrrk

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 10:22

Ben, just because Dick Cheney claims that Obama had 3 options for destroying the lost drone, but failed to act, does not mean that all, or any, of the options was feasible. Cheney would like nothing more than to see Obama make a terrible, hasty, horrific decision.

One wonders who the Republican mole is...or should I say, "Who is Cheney's rat"? Somebody high up leaked this information to Cheney and perhaps to others. I suspect it was one of Obama's top generals....that disloyal, potentially treasonous A-hole needs to be identified and fired immediately.

I suggest that President Obama have Cheney arrested and shipped to Gitmo. After checking in at Club Gitmo, the former VP should be water-boarded until he reveals the identity of the rat who blabbed. Obama should repeat the water-boarding process several times, with Dick Cheney, to make sure that he isn't lying.

Obama is not being served well by his military Commanders; he needs to clean house now, he's got a rat infestation problem.. Cheney's rat needs to walk the plank, or the other rats may become emboldened.

By: yogiman on 12/13/11 at 10:27

You're simply speaking for yourself, dumba..,

You're constantly falsely wording quotes made by different authors. Don't you have enough common sense to give credit where credit is due on the quotes you are posting?

And you, sir (as I use the term loosely) is the biggest idiot I have noted on this site since I came on (uninvited, of course).

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 10:29

I like that idea Loner; are maybe he could send Cheney Switzerland to make freinds.

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 10:30

"Usurpation"? Isn't that a form of constipation? All those big words....sheeesh!

Yeah, Yogi suffers from Soetoero Syndrome...there's no cure....like Alzheimer's Disease, it slowly destroys the mind...but it does leave the victim with a vapid grin...they go into a world of their own.

Although there is no cure, Soetero Syndrome is believed to be spread over the right-wing airwaves and it is endemic to the Southern United States.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 10:31

It is common knowledge that yogi is the Biggest Idiot

Captain Nemo.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/13/11 at 10:35

Loner first he has to have a mind to destroy. He has said many times that he only has half a mind and we know that half is dead.

By: bfra on 12/13/11 at 10:36

Any "sane" person would know by now, people are not buying into his idiotic garbage! Not idiot yogi, he just keeps repeating the same old rumors, day in & day out. Proof positive of no brains!

By: yogiman on 12/13/11 at 10:37

I beg to differ with you, Loner. If a military officer is using his position to alert people like Cheney he is doing the job he swore to do when the joined the services.

"Obama" is the one that should be arrested and shipped to Gitmo for the usurpation of the Oval Office. And congress should be placed on the island with him.

We need a complete turnover of congress in DC for not stopping someone from usurping the Oval Office. That is, if we get to have an election next year.

Hang on to your hats, children.

You, like the others, can't seem to see beyond your nose on the issue. Question: How can you so fully support a man in the Oval Office whom you know nothing about?

If, by his autobiography, he was adopted by his Indonesian stepfather, he lost his American citizenship. If (which we don't know) he regained American citizenship when he reached his adulthood, he had to become a citizen by naturalization. He gave up his natural born citizen status when he was adopted in Indonesia.

And a big question is why is he so secretive about his past? What does he think we should shouldn't know?

Don't you care if he's in the office legally or not?

Sorry, I didn't think so. Most Americans only want legal attendants in the Oval Office.

By: yogiman on 12/13/11 at 10:56

It's funny,

It's been noted several time I don't give the base of my knowledge on comments. But if memory serves me correctly, I have posted several sites where I read the articles I was posting about. It just seems none of you can read the same as I. Or is it, perhaps: If Yogiman read it, it ain't so.

By: Loner on 12/13/11 at 10:58

Soetero Syndrome can cause diarrhea of the pie-hole....this can lead to mental dehydration and usurpation of the cerebral cortex...poor Yogi, he's got it bad!
