Up for Debate: What type of transit should the Broadway-West End corridor get?

Take advantage of the parking lanes on the sides and run buses up those strips. Once that service is doing well and demand requires it, maybe do some of that silly station stuff the Portland lovers want. Scratch that, expand bus services to the rest of Nashville that will not require the long trip to downtown. Forget the sill decorate planters and train-like stops for buses. Save the money that would go to the luxuries and use it for everyone.

There will be some that will think that there is no need for any improvement to getting around Nashville. Cars are the only way to get around. Care to make a guess at which one of the posters that will be?

Rails are a pain in the @ss for motorcycles and cars to cross and once they are laid down, it is very difficult to change the route(s)....streetcar-type rail is old technology...streetcars may look nostalgic and "San Francisco-esque", but rubber-tired buses are the only way to go.....cheaper and better.

Watch for kickbacks, graft etc. from competing parties to Metro decision-makers on a deal like this one...it is ripe for corruption.

To run a "rail system" from Belle Meade to East Nashville is kinda absurd.
Belle Meade homes cost $3.+million, they have their own Police force and everything they need is right there or in Green Hills, 2 miles away. All drive Mercedes, BMW, Porches, Lexus.
No way will anyone West of Vanderbilt take a street car, rail, downtown.
Maybe college students would use it, but not locals.
To a Titans game, which is 4 months of the year.
It's only 5 miles from Belle Meade to downtown.
I lived in Del Mar.CA (similar to Belle Meade), which was 25 miles from downtown San Diego. Qualcum Stadium was 15 miles south.
Nashville is too small to require a rail system. Buses are for the un-employed.
Maybe street cars like a novelty act? In any event, cars will rule.

Why does it cost 136 million for one line?

The BRT on Gallatin Rd was 800,000 for each hybrid bus, they run 6 daily on the line. Plus the shelters. Call it 5 million total.

Surely it does not cost 131 million just to designate one lane each way as bus only?

Metro, State and Vandy employees use the bus system in large numbers. As much as 1/3 of state employees use it regularly.

Karl Dean, aka the consultants Mayor, has another money scheming plan to enrich our lives. Good, bad, or indifferent the bottom line is money. “We’ve been working with consultants, looking where the best chances are to get federal funding,”. The Federal money tap is about to be turned off people. We have to quit looking to Washington to fund local dreams. If the people of Nashville want it then we can pay for it! Lower my Federal taxes and convince me to pay for it locally. Is it worth more local sales tax? Is it worth more property tax? Put it to a vote. Then see how enticing this kind of idea is. That is the real test. Just like LP field and unlike the MCC.

Some form of mass transit would be nice, but it needs to be accessible, cost effective, and "time effective". Back when gas got up to $4 a gallon I looked at taking the bus and it turned a 30 min car ride into a 2 hr commute. My time is worth more than the extra cost of the gas, even at $5 gal.

The bottom line in Washington, is everyone, Politicians, wants a BIG peice of the pie for their contituents.

If Dean can get a 100.+ million for a "rapid transit system', get it.

The mayors of Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, will be more than happy to take our share and spread it around their states. You can bet on it.
