Letter to the Editor

Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 6:23pm

President Obama, clearly contrite and drained from the losses during the mid-term elections, is regrouping and pledges to reach across the aisle.

This time he means it. Good luck.

Labeled a “crushing defeat” and “catastrophic losses” for Democrats, the sun still rose the next morning. He even characterized it as a “shellacking.”

Now, the Republicans control the House, and it’s going to be the same gridlock and butting of heads that we’ve come to expect from Washington.

Speaker Pelosi’s job is ending and the new one, Boehner, promises to defeat the prior two years of Obama’s hard labor. All of it.

There’s not one redeeming act or law Obama designed, created or signed off on?

Anyone think the Democrats will follow in lock step with any shiny new and improved agenda? Not a chance.

So, a new era is upon us and it’s just another day on Capitol Hill.

Well, I have another stupid question, treefrogdt.

If dargent7's LTEs are considered LTEs and loner's comments are considered a simple 'reader comment', why aren't every piece of writing put in this post considered a reader's comment. Why aren't they all considered letters to the editor?

I'm sure you have a brilliant answer. I'd like to know.

By: dargent7 on 11/5/10 at 12:00

"yogi"...."loner's post was "lifted", against his restraining order, and my LTE was sent, via my parole officer.

By: yogiman on 11/5/10 at 12:06

I understand, Sir. Please understand my stupidity. I won't question y'alls insider positions no more.

By: gdiafante on 11/5/10 at 12:08

It's really simple, which is why it is above yogi's head.

Yes, I meant to insult.

The jobs problem will improve when the uncertainty about what an employee costs an employer; works itself out. If they can put the proposed tax increases to bed... nail the cap and trade coffin shut... and turn the health-care debacle into something half-way reasonable we'll see job recovery and the economy will pick back up. Inflation and interest rates are certain to follow though so plan accordingly. I bought a luxury condo at historic low interest rates hopefully during a down market as a hedge... I don't own any gold though so if any of the doomsday prophecies come true I'm be screwed I guess. I just don’t see the utility of gold… maybe I’ll buy $5000 in copper pipe or something instead.

I vote for the President's car to be a Pinto, followed VERY closely by a large heavy Secret Service SUV. Boom shackalaca, Boom shackalace.

By: slacker on 11/5/10 at 1:08

Ben I agree with your assessment. As a hedge, I am heavily invested in a baby carrot farm. Now Yogi comes along with an urban myth. Chlorine is good! Chlorine kills germs damit!
Thanks a lot Yogi!

By: gdiafante on 11/5/10 at 1:17

It's too simplistic, Ben. Employment started to bottom out years ago, before health care and before the Bush tax cuts were close to ending.

Try again.

Speaker Pelosi’s job is ending and the new one, Boehner, promises to defeat the prior two years of Obama’s hard labor. All of it.

said by Paul.

Well, Paul, Obama is about to go where no President has gone before. In down times in America 9.6 unemployment and trillion dollar debt, he's taking 2000 or so of his friends to the TajMahal in India for 200 million tax dollars a day for the flight, planes and security plus he's going there to discuss JOBS GOING FROM U.S. TO INDIA.

I'm so proud of him. He's really a good steward of the US taxdollar. He's one anti-American, if I've ever seen one.

Say good night to the American worker; we'll all have to let India have our jobs.

By: bfra on 11/5/10 at 1:29

slacker - Feel safe, I use baby carrots regularly and have never had any to form any film before use. Maybe yogi just keeps them toooooooo loooooong! That ain't good! lol

Gridlock beats the heck out of unchecked statism.

Ben, that is hardly original. That's almost verbatim for what Rush Limbaugh is claiming. This is the Monkey Wrench approach to governance. It's a great deal easier than actually trying to govern. If and when the GOP takes the WH and the Congress in 2012, the cogs and gears of government should be missing a few teeth.....and the destruction of our federal government will shift into top gear...or what's left of it.

The victory chant was cantored by Sarah Palin: "Repeal, Replace, Restore, Revive" grab your pom poms, boys and cheer along with Sarah:...."Gimme an "R"....Gimme an "E".....it's RE-, RE-, RE- RE-.RE-" (High leg kick - show panties here)

Which threat to the US federal government is more immediate and grave - Bin Laden and extremist Islam or the Republican Party, hopped up on Tea Party extremism..

The Bush is really in the excuse mode lately:

By: Loner on 11/5/10 at 2:31

Keith Olberman has been sacked...he made campaign donations.

Talking heads are being lobbed off everywhere,...Rick Sanchez, Juan Williams and now Keith Olberman. This is what I call the Helen Thomas Effect.

Episodes of free speech within the media elites will not be tolerated these days. This is the post 9-11 paradigm.....Bin Laden scored big...beyond his wildest dreams....the home of the brave is now the home of the intimidated....and the exploiters of intimidation.

Hey, don't get me wrong, employers call the shots and these sacked "newsmen" strayed from the company line....they paid the price...except for Williams, he got a juicy contract from FOX.

By: Loner on 11/5/10 at 2:45

Bush is trying to massage his legacy. He does not want to be remembered as "Junior Bush", "Bush the Younger" or "Cheney's Bitch". And he does not want to be remembered as being a sinister and reckless man, or a con man, who lied about WMD etc. in order to take the nation to war....while another war was still ongoing and unresolved.

Bush has chosen the "I was fooled too" explanation for his reckless and foolish actions. He prefers the title of "Inept", rather than "Corrupt". He has made his choice.

From the excerpts that I've read, it is as if Bush is saying to America is "All the bad stuff...that was all Dick Cheney's doing....not that he controlled me or anything....I was the boss". What a crock of Texas bullshit.

By: budlight on 11/5/10 at 2:45

BFRA AND G: I can't wait to hear your whinney-biney-hineey rants when your lives are turned up-side down by o'bama's socialist agenda. Troll? Yeah, ya'll are to high mucky muck for me. And it's so obvious; only elitist are on board the obama "gimmie" cause I'm "entitled" train. Elite! Stuck up and stuck on 'dem dar seffss".

By: Loner on 11/5/10 at 3:00

Yogi asked why Paul Dargent's comments are "LTE's" while Loner's comments are just "reader comments".

Here's why, Yogi, the "reader comments" group is not invited to the 5-Star Dinner...they're trying to save a buck...as you were saying, Obama has ruined the economy.

Seriously, I was just as surprised as anyone else to see my post elevated the "reader's comments" level.

With an LTE, one deliberately tries to craft a missive on a timely topic, using bona fide facts and credible sources etc. You try to keep it simple, yet effective...short and sweet. You make it comprehensive enough to be serious, but entertaining enough to be read. The old adage is true, Brevity is the Soul of Wit.

When one has crafted an LTE, one submits it through the established methods and protocols....today, that's usually by Email. I did not submit my comment to the Editors for publication, they chose it...and I am genuinely flattered.

And I am also flattered that you , Yogiman, care about whether or not old Loner gets his proper "atta boys". I'm satisfied with what I got.

"ben- hubs just learned his job will end in March. He's been there over 25 years."

Fun, my condolences. People like ben should some day know the joys of unemployment. I suspect his tune would change drastically.

By: BenDover on 11/5/10 at 3:31

Fund... I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope he's able to find something else even better in the interim.

gd, the labor market tightened up on the promise of an unchecked liberals in the White House and congress. When Obama was running around promising to pass a huge health care entitlement, double the capital gains rates, bankrupt the coal industry, rewrite nafta and pass a liberal's wet dream of social expansion on the backs of small business owners they, the people with something to lose, were paying attention and started getting conservative in their hiring practices. Consumers dialed back their spending curtailing the business cycle substantially as they saw the tumble of the market and feared for what was to come.

You can't force business owners to hire but you can create a climate either positive or negative for hiring; and Obama has, in promise and practice, been full throttle in the negative direction since the big eared dope entered the national political scene.

By: bfra on 11/5/10 at 3:44

Ben - Get real! Obama did not cause all the chaos we are in today. Even Bush has sense enough to know that. Why do you think Bush is making all the excuses for his lame brain handlings? Funny part, he probably thinks people believe him.

By: brrrrk on 11/5/10 at 3:45

Ben,

Talk about looking at the world thru Bush colored glasses..... care to see some stats?

http://www.econdataus.com/empterm.html

And have you seen the "bikini graph".....

http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-jobs-lost-in-the-bush-and-obama-administration-2010-2

By: Loner on 11/5/10 at 3:48

"Big eared dope?" Now it's getting down to crude ad hominem...what's next?

Ben hasn't modified his narrative since Obama won the 2008 election. He blamed the financial and economic meltdown that occurred on Bush's watch, in September, 2008, on the spectrr of an Obama presidency. Ben claims that when small and large business saw that ghostly appirition, they ran for the exits....as any sane businessman would do. Obama scared these rational men into doing irrational things.

But Ghost Busters is here...the Tea Party will deal with that specter-in-chief.

Ben, that is one sorry ghost story....Obama frightened the capitalists into a stampede....very entertaining......but pure fiction, my friend.

By: Loner on 11/5/10 at 3:49

s/h/b specter....mea culpa.

By: BenDover on 11/5/10 at 4:09

Things clicked along well during the Bush admin despite 9/11, world-com, enron, the dot.com bubble burst, two wars several unprecedented natural disasters. It took Nancy, Harry and the promise of Obama... combined with the CRA / Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac malfeasence to tank the economy.

Bush and Bernanke fixed the crash before Bush left with TARP and a major liquidity injection to prevent a full on run on the banks. Now TARP has been almost completly repaid which could have erased a very big chunk of the deficit that is blamed on Bush. Pelosi, Reid and Obama had other aims though because they respent all of the TARP rapayments plus ran up the tab an additional $3 Trillion in added debt (that's $3Trillion PLUS the TARP repayments that they've spent in < 20 months). While the rest of the world is recovering from this economic down-turn we've got extended and increasing unemployment and the government's economic malfeasence is so bad we're having to buy our own debt!

By: Loner on 11/5/10 at 5:57

Three trillion? This is getting into the realm of full-blown fantasy.....that number came straight out of some right-wing demagogue's Kenmore cleavage....Joe the Plumber, no doubt.

All this sudden fiscal responsibility is political theater.....Bush and Cheney started two expensive and unnecessary shooting wars and the Republicans signed off on the whole thing, with little or no debate. These unholy holy wars have dragged on for years and will continue to suck our treasury dry for years to come..... Bush-Cheney are to blame. The price tag for these elective wars has never been fully calculated, to my knowledge, but it must be in the trillion-dollar range, if not more.

By: budlight on 11/5/10 at 6:11

2 hundred million a day for obama to priss around india like a bdoc. sounds a little pricey to me. Guess you guys think it's ok. well, you're all jerks so it's normal for you to support obama.

yeah, bush sucked. So i though obama was all about CHANGE, but he's more and more and more of the SAME old crap. spend; spend and now make paper play money to increase inflation.

To bring you brilliant Obama fans up to date on my stupid remark about him going on a 'little' trip, here's a little more stupid comments about his little trip.

That trip is going to cost the government 2 billion dollars for a 10 day journey to Asia. That's 200 million a day for you brilliant ones. His trip will be through India, Indonesia, China and Korea. There is a 3,000 person entourage. There will be 40 planes involved with 30 or more warships maneuvered into the region for security purposes. And this is the brilliant (president) from a nation in bankruptcy.

Folks, if you can't read Obama's ultimate goal, you are going to learn it pretty damn soon now. You speak of Bush running up a debt. To a point, he did. You have to look at conflicts in different ways. You can bet you asses we would have had a lot more attacks if he had not took the action he did. That action could have been stopped if Bill Clinton had taken the man who caused it (sorry, I can't remember his name) when he was offered to Clinton. He wouldn't.

Our military men are being sent to those countries with one hand tied behind their backs. Have any of you ever been in a fight you didn't want to win (no, I don't mean that little spat with your wife?husband or girl?boyfriend)?

In his first 18 months in the White House, Obama has put this nation deeper into debt than all the people in that office before him.. combined. Read the directions, folks. They are simple to read if you have half a brain.

By: Loner on 11/6/10 at 7:08

The post election blues are setting in, like the post partum blues after childbirth. The novelty, the anxiety and the uncertainty are now replaced by sobering realities.....now comes the real work of dealing with the consequences of what just happened. New anxieties and uncertainties replace those felt during the gestation period.

The Republican leadership has announced plans to repeal and replace "Obamacare" and other Administration accomplishments while simultaneously blocking the advance of the president's agenda.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, recently admitted that the GOP's top priority is to defeat President Obama in the 2012 election. Reviving the economy, resolving the wars, retooling the infrastructure and things like that are further down the list of GOP priorities. I guess that this obsession with winning elections through obstructionism passes for statesmanship these days.

I think that the American people expect a great deal more than what the Republican Party can or is prepared to deliver.

They want a balanced federal budget, for instance. The GOP-led House was able to balance the budget when Bill Clinton was President, let's see them repeat that stunt. If they can't do it in two years, the Tea Party may revolt;. Those angry folks want action now...when that proves to be impossible, their frustration may cause a great schism in the GOP.

Good luck on your surfing, Loner.

Sorry I didn't mention where I got that latest information on their beloved man in office (sorry, I can't call him President until he proves he is). It seems the liberal tinted Snopes and Huffington Post are too pro-Obama. The real info came from Reuters, and other international news services confirmed the earlier stories.

By: bfra on 11/6/10 at 7:47

Loner - Think there is a pete & repete poster here this AM!

I have always wanted to go ice fishing in one of little houses, with a stove & coffee pot. That would sure beat bass fishing here, in the winter.

Loner,

You can't tell much difference between the two parties of today. Each of them seems to want to influence us they deserve get our votes. Hey, you don't want to mess up their career.

Until this country is taken back by the people, we'll have a government run country, for themselves, not us.

Theoretically, that was the thoughts by our founders. We do have term limits called elections. We just have good actors in there that con convince the people to keep them in office.

Question: By what right, or authority, does congress have to set their own salary, retirement program and heath care? None that I have found in our Constitution. Serve only one term and receive a lifetime retirement. Damn good job, ain't it?

I questioned our congressmen about them joining us in the new Obamacare program because they said it was a good program, even though they hadn't read it. If they were so satisfied with their own program, why not just take the general population into their program. I ain't got no answer yet.

By: dargent7 on 11/6/10 at 8:29

Is there anything more nauseating than watch GW Bush's "world tour" to promote his "book"?
This guy is so pathetic I watch it out of sheer train wreck curiosity.
Matt Lauer has to have taken 4 showers after each 10 minute segment to wash the disgusting flith off.
I cannot believe, out of 300+ million people wandering the USA, this idiot became President. TWICE!

By: bfra on 11/6/10 at 8:39

d7 - Bush carried TN in both elections (I think) and the same dumb clucks are still voting. So now Haslam for gov., a Bush wannabe, even down to the same smirky grin. He bought his way in!
