Letter to the Editor

Hamid Karzai has a point: If only Americans infatuated with their “superior” religion, morality, government, etc., would take time to listen to him. It seems our greatest “successes” in Afghanistan have been night raids and assassinations accomplished via robotic drones. But they make us seem like cowards using technology to protect ourselves at the expense of civilians who don’t have night vision equipment and joystick-launched Hellfire missiles. Karzai is right when he is quoted in wire reports as saying, “The raiding homes at night. Terrible. Terrible. ... Bursting into homes at night, arresting Afghans, this isn’t the business of any foreign troops.” So why was Gen. Petraeus irked by Karzai’s comments, when Karzai is obviously correct? Many years ago, American ambassador to the U.S.S.R. Charles Bohlen noted that Soviet officials could never comprehend the fact that most of the people under the thumb of their heavy-handed military hated them with a passion. Unless we stop being so heavy-handed, we’ll be just as fiercely hated. Karzai has explained why our military needs to tone down its act and we need to listen to him, because he’s obviously right.

Sounds like the perfect way to get even more of our troops
killed as if the present numbers aren't high enough. "Tone
down our act'? If we want to change our roll to Afgha Police
Force Mr. Burch and Karzai may be right, but if it's truly a war
as commonly defined, we're there to win and protect our troops
in the best ways possible. If not to win, then let's get the hell out!

How could the "war" in Afghanistan get any worse?
The President says, "back off", and all the USA knows is killing, plundering, pillaging.
Any Taliban leader has fled the scene by now.
All we're killing is civilians.
You'd think Vietnam would of been all it took to wake they sob's up, but no.

Mike Burch, articulate LTE's like yours, on the subjects that you have expounded on are usually greeted with snoring noises, ( ZZZZZZZZZZZZ ) etc. on these NCP boards.
These folks are mainly Israeli supporters; they drank the Kool-Aid.

If you would like to discuss this and other substantive Midle East issues, please visit my livejournal site:

Thanks and have a good day, Nashville.

Yeah, that's it Loner...lol

By: gdiafante on 11/18/10 at 8:39

Gov, I'm not sure it can be won. We need to get out, but that isn't going to happen.

By: AmyLiorate on 11/18/10 at 8:44

"I love the smell of hell-fire exhaust in the night"

Well, since they're fired from 1000 miles away I guess we wont see any cool movie lines like that.

Mr. Burch, you won't see our troops running around on the ground in the land that is known as a black hole for empires such as ours. From the sound of your letter I will assume that you already know the US/Karzai controlled areas account for only about 20% of the country. We've been there a decade and Osama is still sending out videos. We've probably had more impact in reducing heroin production than on the ones who instigated attacks on two US Embassies, the USS Cole and later 4 airplanes that killed 3000 people.

Osama bin laden threw himself into the briar patch, and we followed right into it.

He set us up with a tar baby and George Bush hugged it and declared "Mission Accomplished". Years later and we're still covered with more tar stains than clean spots. Osama laughs. He is self exiled in rugged mountains and caves - but he's freer than 300 million of us.

I'm certainly no Israeli supporter. An athletic supporter, maybe...

"House 'the Cup' of Pain"...yes. Has a nice ring to it.

yogi is so in love with Obama, he thinks about him 24/7!

That has to be very, very wrong bfra. Yogi can only think half wa…..

By: yogiman on 11/18/10 at 1:05

You're right, Captain Nemo. But all things considered, it looks like my half brain works so much better than your full brain. What have you got in there? It doesn't seem to be very much intelligence.

By: Captain Nemo on 11/18/10 at 1:17

yogi thinks a half brain works so much better than a whole brain does. This is the reason Gordonsville is always a half a century behind Carthage.

By: yogiman on 11/18/10 at 1:32

You apparently haven't been there lately, Captain Nemo. Gordonsville is shrinking and Gordonsville is growing.

Maybe you need some new glasses; or a late fashioned brain scan.

I think it is you that needs new glasses or a late fashioned brain scan, (What ever a late fashioned brain scan is.)

By: Captain Nemo on 11/18/10 at 2:06

Apparently having a half brain in Gordonsville must be an accomplishment.

By: gdiafante on 11/18/10 at 2:08

Wasn't Gordonsville featured in "Deliverance"?

By: Captain Nemo on 11/18/10 at 2:20

It was a possible site, but they found that the people could only do half of what was asked of them.

Is there really a rivalry between Gordonsville and Carthage?

I'm looking at the google map and notice one of the main roads in Gordonsville is
Temperance Hall Hwy. Are they aware that the 21st amendment passed 70 years ago?

By: AmyLiorate on 11/18/10 at 2:44

I wonder if the VFW is on Temperance Hall hwy. The VFW near me has a bar.

Yogi, were you in action overseas?

By: gdiafante on 11/18/10 at 2:47

If you can remember prohibition, you weren't there...

By: yogiman on 11/18/10 at 3:06

Sorry, captain Nemo. I've got too much on my mind to think of what I'm putting in this machine right now. I'm glad you can read well enough to notice my error. The actual facts are; Carthage is shrinking and Gordonsville is growing, growing and growing.

They are moving the courtrooms, sheriff's office and jail out of down town Carthage. They don't have much left other than lawyers, D. T. McCall and a couple of banks. The industries that was there have been gone quite some time.

Gordonsville is on the grow side now with the I-40 exit there. The biggest difference is population wise. Carthage does have more population right now, but Gordonsville is growing. Heck, we got 2 liquor stores there now, but Carthage is too religiously inclined to allow a liquor store. They have to go out of town to get their liquor.

Amy, Smith Country is a country county. We don't want no bunch of city people lake y'all comin in here. Stay home, ya hear? They knew I was going to grow up when the ratified that XX! Amendment.Figured the nation would need it then. But, hey, have you ever drank any of that moonshine whiskey? Its sure better than the store bought. When I moved here I was told there was about 10,00 people. On my road I was told there was only 5 families on that road. The latest count was 19,500 people in Smith county and 24 families on my road. I'm still trying to figure out where they came from.

By: gdiafante on 11/18/10 at 3:13

Thanks for the info, yogi. Now I know where to avoid.

By: AmyLiorate on 11/18/10 at 3:18

Yogi, all those people are coming for the 'shine man!

That wasn't too nice to lump me in with all the city folks. You hardly know me :(
For all you know I live in a barn.

Do you have any land for sale? I want to be far away from the interstate, so you won't have to worry too much about me. How much does 100 acres cost in the area North of you?

By: brrrrk on 11/18/10 at 3:43

Hamid Karzai has a lot to worry about. The last leader that was left standing when an occupying force left town was tortured, had his penis cut off, was made to eat it, and was then strangled to death. All in all a bad day to be sure.

By: yogiman on 11/18/10 at 3:52

Hey, Amy, I only said y'all. I didn't mention your name. But I'm glad gdiafante let me know he sure wouldn't want to live here with me in the neighborhood. Its good to know, gdiafante. thanks.

As for your question about Carthage and Gordonsville rivalry. Not only yes, but hell yes. They play the first games of the year against each other. When I was a child (yeah, I used to be one) we always played our hate game as the last one of the year. It made the loser feel lousy until the next time. Gave us a lot the think about. Maybe that's why these two don't want to wait until the last game. They've got enough to think about all season.

Are you really interested in a farm here? I only have 26.5 acres but I'm pretty close to the interstate. If interested, I'll look something up for you. I am a licensed real estate broker.

Speaking of a barn, Amy, my old house is almost 200 years old. I've only been able to trace it back to 1816. Darn, almost into my childhood.

By: AmyLiorate on 11/18/10 at 4:20

lol Yogi, "almost into my childhood"

I want at least 50, but price will determine the acreage in the end. Do you think an auction gets a better price than a for sale sign? What does large acreage cost out that way?

Did you all see this explanation on the Feds QE2?

By: AmyLiorate on 11/18/10 at 4:47

very professional, only the best security we have!

By: yogiman on 11/18/10 at 5:08

Amy, right now you can probably get a better buy at a 'for sale' farm. Most of the people selling farms aren't in too much of a 'get rid of' scheme. They usually can put them on the market and wait until someone comes along wanting it.

It is getting pretty much in the category now that most farms in Smith county are being divided into tracks. Farms way ouchyander will be less than those near town.

If you have a particular location and price range, I would be happy to look for you. You can use me as a broker or pick another one if you know of anyone. I'm not big time in the business any more.

By: yogiman on 11/18/10 at 5:18

Captain Nemo,

My half brain works so much better because it has so much more space to think in there. All intelligent people know the more space you have the better your brain can work.

Come to think of it, what size head do you have? Biggun or littleun?
