Here’s hoping Mike Curb can help curb Belmont’s homophobia and hypocrisy.
Belmont is more than happy to accept tuition money from gay students, heterosexual students who have extramarital sex and students who drink. If Belmont is willing to accept the money of students who sometimes fall short of being perfect angels, why focus so narrowly on homosexuality? And how many Belmont professors have been fired for violating Biblical injunctions against drinking, lying, having extramarital sex or wearing unisex clothing?
Very few American Christians live by every letter of Biblical law, which is a very good thing because the Bible commands all sorts of heinous things: stoning boys to death for being “stubborn,” stoning girls to death for the “crime” of having been raped, etc. If the writers of the Bible were incorrect when they said God commanded infanticide, matricide, slavery, ethnic cleansing and genocide ... who knows? Perhaps they were wrong about God being a homophobe as well.

@ Mike Burch: In an earlier LTE this week you cautioned against using the Bible to establish ethical principles. It would be kind to classify that effort as a travesty. The above offering exhibits a similar vein of your apparent contempt for the sacred writings. Your commentary reveals your lack of discipline in hermeneutics.
In your flippant attempt to present injunctions and prohibitions for Christians, you rely heavily on the Mosaic Law. Unfortunately, you abuse a number of the texts used for source material. However, even if one practices careful exegesis in a study of the Old Law, it must be kept in mind that it was written for ancient Israel. While a Christian needs to be familiar with the whole body of Hebrew Scriptures, it is the New Testament that guides her or him with precepts and promises.
Of course the core point that prompted you to write your letters was to justify sexual perversion. All sexual immorality, which includes homosexuality is condemned in the New Testament. All attempts to “explain away” the passages dealing with these abhorrent practices fall woefully short.
Personally, I wish Ms. Howe would be offered her job BACK, accept it, get "married" to her girlrfriend, have the sperm donor be named, have him sue for custody rights, and this whole soap opera takes a turn for the worst. Or, better still, they all live happily ever after.
And I'm homophobic against anyone who uses a word like "hermeneutics".
Sounds like a disease that only a shot of penicillian can clear up.
I assume "bnakat" is "male".
"sexual immorality...homosexuality is condemed"...."these abhorrent practices..."
Any wonder why America is screwed up beyond repair?
These people actually exist?
Bet a million he's a republican and voted for GW Bush, TWICE. Ya, think?
Good morning, Nashville!
Another fine LTE from Mike Burch and another display of pedantic, ostentatious carping from old Bnakat...the hit & run defender of the faith.
Here is a cut-paste from my comments about Mike's earlier, related LTE. I posted it at night, after the board had "settled":
By: Loner on 12/7/10 at 7:28
Late to the table, I had stuff to do today. Mike Burch wrote an excellent LTE. I'd give it an A+.
Dr. Dover wrote,"The letter writer makes some moral equivalences to Old Testament and New Testament though". I think that Ben Dover missed Mike's point; those who "juxtapose" Old Testament concepts of morality over Christian concepts of morality are the ones who are opposing equal rights for gays, not our LTE writer.
Mike Burch was pointing out the hypocrisy and moral dishonesty of those who "juxtapose" in this manner, he was not establishing any kind of justifiable "moral equivalence" or use that idea as support for his argument.
I did hear witnessing for Jesus of Nazareth , Son of God, from two of our regulars, Ben and D7. I look forward to seeing their Christianity in action as we go forward. I expect there to be some turning of the cheeks, loving of their enemies and being their brother's keepers. I expect these two witnesses for Christ to treat others as they would like to be treated themselves. Additionally, I expect them to forgive any and all trespasses made against them, so that they might likewise be forgiven of their trespasses..... and not only that, I expect them to give unto Caesar's what is Caesar's....and to the Lord, what is the Lord's.
I make no claim of being Christian....but I'll try to live up to those standards as well.....because they make sense, not because I fear post-mortem justice or believe that a human being who lived over two thousand years ago was and is God almighty, the immortal creator of the universe and an all-too-human, vengeful supreme being who is coming back with revenge in mind.
Mike Burch & Loner the voices of reason and calm in a
storm! So there now, ye of little or no faith, or lots of faith.
Behold their words of "I'm OK-you're OK!
God is vengeful. His revenge is to leave man alone. We are far more harmful to each other than anything God could unleash.
God walks into a gay piano bar...
This story has longer legs than any female gym coach I've ever met.
The rest of the country is leaving TN and the South behind. I can't believe how backward we have become. We have let the narrow-minded churches take over our lives in an unproductive way. All the Bible-belt preachers want is money, money, money, and the church loving members give when it takes food off of their own table.
TN has become a one party system, and you just wait and see where we go in the next four years.
.
Hey House, morning all.
I'm still wondering why Belmont has a Gay Soccer team. If they have a Gay Soccer team then it makes sense that they had a Gay Soccer Coach. That's all I keep hearing about is some gay soccer coach.
Actually, pswindle, the rest of the country is moving TO backward @$$ Tennessee and Texas to escape the failed bastions of liberalism like California and New York.
Wrong, Ben. Talk to people who don't live or die by partisanship and you'll see a very tolerant America. Unfortunately those who yell the loudest are the nutjobs.
Here's a thought.... It's a CHRISTIAN school! LOL seriously.... If you want tolerance, move to California or at the very minimum, get a job with a state school.
..and....I was not aware that you had to be gay to be on their soccer team.
The migration patterns are a statistical fact, gd.
So you're saying that Christians are intolerant...I'd agree with that. Especially Baptists.
The last Baptist church I attended I had to leave abruptly when the preacher began ranting about a homosexual he saw in the parking lot of Wal Mart and how he had to pray for the strength not to physically confront the man.
True story. My mother to this day tells me that I shouldn't judge Baptists based on that experience...but I notice that she's now Presbyterian...interesting...
And the country's verdict on undisguised liberalism is a demonstrable fact based on the last election.
Ben, take the tinfoil hat off, it's Christmas for Christ sake. lol
Try as you might to discredit, gd... but the stats back me up.
Ben, don't be so gullible. The last election was no more a mandate for Conservativism than Obama's election was a mandate for Liberalism.
The country lies in the middle, but like I said, you wouldn't know it from all the partisan barking.
What stats? That people are migrating to the South? Duh. Are they migrating because of political beliefs or EMPLOYMENT.
Sometimes you're funny.
The last election reminded the country that when you elect moderate democrats it gives control of the country to the left-wing zealots in the Democratic Party leadership. It also reflected the fact that when we finally peeled back the veneer that was so carefully painted by the press over Obama if revealed to many that he's not a post-partisan, post racial, moderate but instead a radical nut-job far outside the main-stream of American values. This guy is so bad he makes Carter look good.
Either one supports my case, gd.
I guess Ben is saying that people are moving to TN because they don't like wine being sold in grocery stores. lol
You know TN is bad when people from Iowa say it's backwards.
For God SO LOVED the world. . . . .; nothing else needs to be said or matters.
Whatever you say, Ben. By the way, pass the koutchie.
Bud Adams is standing by for Mike Curbs ruling on the Titans team rebellion.
Well I said the strategy of just hoping Peyton continues to screws up was a bad idea for the Titans but it's worked for them so far I guess.
How was I to know I was ogling gay women soccer players all these years?
Ben, tonight Petunia Manning will shock all football fans, he will catch his own passes.
slacker - That would be amazing! However, according to the media hype, I thought he was the entire team. And, according to his "not my fault" facial expressions, he does no wrong, he thinks.
"I hate divorce says the Lord"
"He(Jesus) answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
"Are you married? Do not seek a divorce." St Paul to the Corinthian church
Funny how all the avowed "Christians" are ok with divorce. Did LIfeway stop selling books by Charles Stanley when he got divorced? Did they refuse to vote for Ronald Reagan who committed adultery and divorce?
Was Betty Ford publicly condemned by Pat Robertson?
"Woe unto you...hypocrites...."
If all of the screw-ups this season is any indicator I predict alternating agony for the fans of both teams with the final score being decided by dumb luck.
I've made the divorce point many times myself.

You forgot the biggest of the big... the Newtster. He divorced his first wife while she was in her sick bed recovering from cancer surgery, and cheated on his second wife with his third (during the Lewinski scandal no less). In his case it shouldn't be "Woe", but "Whoa".... enough already.
How about Drugbaugh? He's on #4?
I remember once on Pat Robertson's show he had a glowing story and interview with Mickey Rooney----who was married how many times? 8, 9?
Plus Mickey talked about his faith etc but in somewhat vague terms. Pat never asked "what church do you attend?" because Rooney was at that time a dedicated member of the North Hollywood Church of Relgious Science.
Glad to see that those new Tea Party GOP freshman are changing things in D.C.... it truly IS business as usual.

bfra, Petunia is missing some key receivers, its the least he can do.
He also intends to kick extra points without a holder, and call a 15 yard penalty on himself, to demonstrate that he's an ok guy.
slacker - Sounds typical. Never let it be said that, he needs anything to boost his over zealous EGO! Hope he gets sacked, everytime he gets the ball.
Jealousy breeds contempt. I don't blame you, I mean all you have here is VY, Methuselah and some guy named Rusty.
Colts - 31
Titans - 9
Chuck Cecil Bird shots - 28
Bud Adams nod offs - 16
Jeff Fisher beard strokes - 4,009
g - BIG heads breed contempt, also. And, Petunia (per slacker) has got the biggest, with the longest face in the league. He is a good GB, by far from the best!
which one of you is the GaGa fan?
Check out the cover of "Telephone" here:

It's the people who did those Hyundai Christmas ads. Pretty clever.
Titans - 17
Colts - 6
Mannings arrogant expressions - 504
Bud Adams - He forgot there was a game!
bfra, Bud just released a statement: ''I want Jack Pardee and Warren Moon, to work this thing out.''
He has a huge cranium, no doubt. He also has a Lombardi Trophy on the mantle.
I hope Bud Adams flips off someone tonight...probably Fisher...they could fight on the sideline...that would be awesome...then VY jumps into it from the stands...that's must see TV...
Yeah.. just like rassling. Vince cracks Fisher with a chair. lol
Buds wig flys off and gets entangled in CJ's grill.. Oh the humanity
Slacker, the guys who used to kick the extra points were called 'drop kickers'.
And speaking of divorce; you never get to really know your spouse until you marry them, regardless of how long you date them, or even live with them.
"Yeah.. just like rassling. Vince cracks Fisher with a chair. lol"
??? I thought that was Jerry Springer Show?
