What most people don't understand is that the fairgrounds and racetrack do generate tax dollars and have sustained themselves for all these years. We have other venues such as the Municipal Auditorium and Farmers’ Market that Metro has subsidized for years. So why are we not tearing them down and building something that will generate tax dollars?

Also the racetrack had an average of 7,000 people in attendance this year, and the Nashville Sounds only averaged 3,000. So to me, this is a no-brainer. Let's invest in the fairgrounds and make it the best fairgrounds in the country.

Good morning, Nemo! How have you been?

Happy holidays, everyone!

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 6:28

Where would we get the money to improve the fairgrounds properly? Why spend money (and lots of it) repairing years of delapidation when it can be turned into something different that will improve the area and create better tax revenue?

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 6:48

Hello Blanket. I am good and a Happy Holiday to you.

I use to go to the races there all of the time, but the city killed it long time ago. I wished that it could be saved, but I am afraid it is too late. As for the money to improve it, if that is what the city wanted to do, I’m sure the money would appear.

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 6:52

Enough with the fairgrounds...it's like a redneck family fighting to have that old rusted out car on blocks preserved in the front yard.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 6:57

President Obama flies to his home State of Hawaii for the Holidays.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 6:59

That remark resembles me. grrrr ;-)

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 7:06

Merry Christmas Nemo.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:10

Good analogy, g! How are you doing? Happy holidays!

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 7:12

I see that they are predicting a white Christmas for us. I remember the last time we had some measurable snow on Xmas. It was my grandmothers last holiday. She had cancer and we all knew she wasn't winning. Thankfully, she was lucid that day and when it started to snow, I think we all started crying. She died two weeks later.

I'll never forget that. I'm not very religious, but I'd like to think that she's in peace.

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 7:12

Great blanket, how are you? I miss you around here!!

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 7:12

Hay!! I am reading this. lol

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:14

lol, Nemo!

i think the forecast is a grocery store conspiracy. they want to increase sales so they pay off the weather channel. lol

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:15

i've been working a lot but i'm much happier doing what i'm doing. just no time to play here. i miss all the snarkiness and open season on trolls. *grin* i still pop in to read the comments, though. i miss you guys!

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 7:15

I’m sorry to hear that gdia. I am sure she is and you don’t have to be religious to believe that she is at peace. I am sure she is.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:16

g, have you tried the Blue Moon winter brew? not too bad...

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 7:17

You have a Merry Christmas gdia.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:20

OK, I gotta go. Here's a great big cyber *hug* to my buddies here on the board. Have a safe and joyous holiday and all the best for 2011!

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 7:20

The forecast is real for me, Blanket. I am heading to Michigan today for the Holidays.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:21

Michigan? Yikes - drive safe! I hear it started snowing there a couple days ago. Are you going to drop in and say hi to dargent's family while you're there? lol

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 7:23

It's a winter wonderland up there, Nemo. Be safe.

I haven't had that one blanket, but I need one. This is the first year both of the kids are aware of Christmas...meaning they know they get presents and they want everything. But I can't wait until Xmas morning, it's going to be great...

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 7:25

that's awesome, g!

By: dargent7 on 12/23/10 at 7:27

Nemo: Michigan? My old stomping grounds. What city there?
With your new knees, can you ski? I always skied Pine Knob and Mt. Holley.
Please don't say Detroit. I'll have to report you to the authorities.
But, the Lions are on a winning streak...3 of their last 65 games.

By: dargent7 on 12/23/10 at 7:35

What in the hell's going on in NYC. Jets coach Rex Ryan and the foot-fetish videos?
I always thought men liked breasts. What's up with feet?
Do you suck them? Tickel them? I've been missing the boat all these years.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 7:45

I am going to the Great City of Ann Arbor. However Detroit is only a short drive away, so you better be good Paul. I still may have to go there anyway. My daughter is flying in.

I never stop at feet. I take in the whole woman.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/23/10 at 7:59

Thanks for the good wishes Blanket, gdia, d7

I got to go now. It will be dark when I get there. I will check in tomorrow to see if anything is happening.

By: treefrogdk on 12/23/10 at 8:08

You are too logical for this board; but you do make sense.

Obama is taking over the Internet; watch out. Did anyone get one of DEAN's JOYFUL HOLIDAY cards? It's a hodgepodge of scribble. And soon, we will all be forced to give up our Christmas greeting if Dean and Obama have their way.

Merry Christmas. For God SO LOVED . . . .Be safe on the highways, biways and flyways.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 12/23/10 at 8:20

ok, had to pop back in.

Jenn Trail? I googled. She's in the music biz. I'm an accountant.

idiot. try again!

By: dargent7 on 12/23/10 at 8:30

Nemo: I truly miss Ann Arbor, you lucky sob.
Naked women, capricious sex, beer bongs, marijuana bongs, keggers, beer blasts, more nudity. general malfeasence, a $5.00 marijuana joint fine,.......ah, the college dormitory.
Looking back, I'm amazed I even graduated, "with honors", no less.

By: AmyLiorate on 12/23/10 at 9:03

A very Merry Christmas to all of you. Safe travels Nemo and anyone else who is going over the hills and through the woods...

And if you are flying just remember that it hasn't come to this:

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/12/15/tsa-wtf-otd.html Well, not yet anyway.

Sounds like D'Argent didn't have enough fun in Ann Arbor... he can still remember that much!

COMPROMISE AND REASONABILITY are needed in the Fairgrounds discussion. If the Fairgrounds are not profitable enough, what are the options?

The Markin report (which was done for Metro) said better management was needed. Take out meddling by the Mayor etal, bring in professional management & create better governance. Then if it fails, discuss other options. Vs. Dean's plan to destroy and dismantle the Fairgrounds asap.

In this situation BETTER MANAGEMENT/PROBATION is the most CONSERVATIVE course of action - less risk - plus the chance of rehabilitating the property for future Nashvillians.

That way Nashville does not have to GAMBLE whether Dean's "redevelopment" revenue projections are valid. (FYI -some in the local Real estate community are starting to voice their doubts about Dean's Fairgrounds "redevelopment" plans - I believe the Nashvilleclatterclass and enclave websites have links to these articles.)

Many thousands use the Fairgrounds every year. It deserves a chance to be saved.,, to be the permanent home of the Fair etc. as the founders intended.
RACES ARE PROFITABLE. Happy race fans are like other sports fans - they spend money. Only 5 races were held this year because of limitations imposed by Dean etal. The racing community would provide the money to improve the racetrack - if they could get more than a 1-year contract. They need a multiple year contract in order to recoup their improvement expenses.

Then wIth a multiple-year contract, the racetrack area would be fixed, races could be held, and revenues would start coming in on the race side again, and the Fairgrounds could be improved. However, DEAN does not want the Fairgrounds to be profitable. That is one of the reasons he is in such a big hurry to destroy the racetrack (even though Dean said during the election that he would protect the track).
IF PROFITABILITY IS REQUIRED - why not shut down other non-profitable, Metro-supported activities: the Titans, Predators, golf courses, parks, etc. These routinely lose money and have to be subsidized by the taxpayer. I do not like football - but do not resent others having this entertainment paid for by Metro.

The Fairgrounds - which cost the taxpayers nothing - should not be destroyed because Dean/Riebeling want to cash it out.

By: girliegirl on 12/23/10 at 10:45

Gdia, I was at Council Tuesday, and saw the "attendee" there to scruff over the FairGrounds.... jokes were flying left and right about those who showed up out in that hallway. And now I can honestly say, our Metro employees don't get paid enough. (seriously) Even the hired security officers were twitchy. I can also tell you that the majority of the car tags in the parking garage were from OUTSIDE of Davidson County, which just verifies that these turkeys are here for a free ride...period. If we started charging adequate user fees and seller fees and such, this nonsense would cease. Promise.

By: girliegirl on 12/23/10 at 10:46

I met the newest MDHA board member, and man, he's going to be great for the job! The guy is tough and a "no non-sense" kind of fella. (good choice!)

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 10:50

I wouldn't doubt it, girlie. lol

By: yogiman on 12/23/10 at 10:54

Merry CHRISTmas to all, folks. I hope the next two years are much better than the last two, to all of you, because changes you aren't going to like are coming.

America is in deep trouble, folks. It is time to wake up.

By: racer84 on 12/23/10 at 10:55

If you were half as intelligent as all those scary figures you "saw" in the hallway you would know those people spent a HALF MILLION DOLLARS in DAVIDSON county at the last race of the season.

Until you show up somewhere driving a half million dollar truck and trailer with another $100k of equipment inside and drop $5k to have fun for the weekend with friends and family your comments make you look just like you do now.

Keep spouting that line. We got receipts for the Metro Council.....

By: gdiafante on 12/23/10 at 11:00

Girlie, I believe racer just proved your point. lol

By: Shane Smiley on 12/23/10 at 11:43

Shane Smiley
Racer has a good point and the answer ti girlies accusation of racers having a free ride.

The average race team does have over $100,000.00 in equipment when he rolls thru the Fairgrounds gates.
Most of that equipment is bought here n Davidson county. Yes, girlie, even those racers from out of county spend LARGE amounts of money in Davidson county based race equipment manufactures and distributors.

When you sign in at the back gate, you pay your entry fee.
Every person with you pays a $25.00 pit pass fee.

Tires, gas, concession stand food are all purchased on property
food and supplies from the local restaurants and grocery stores are purchased during the day.
Fuel for haulers that a cost an average half million to purchase.
As you can see, girlie, no free ride here.
in fact, Racing contributes greatly to the tax base with the property tax paid on shops and business,
sales tax from racing enterprise and drawing people from out of town into Davidson county.

Your claim that racers, fans, flea market venders, and expo event promoters are from out of town simply does not hold water.
First, MANY /MOST of the race community lives in Davidson county.
next, You act as if people coming to spend money in our city is a bad thing.
I think those of us Nashvillians that rely on tourism(People from out of county) to make a living would find your statements narrow minded at best.

I have seen you make the same comment of a free ride and referring to us as Turkeys.
We have no free ride, we are not asking for a free ride, we are asking to have the opportunity to live, work, and play in Nashville and continue our love for Motorsports. I have asked many of the neighbors to get together and find common ground on the issues at hand. As of yet, none have accepted my offer.
Calling usTurkeys is uncalled for.

As for your comment: Even the hired security officers were twitchy. The security staff was fine. One officer upstairs got a little flustered just before the meeting and barked at a few people. Council member Craddock addressed the issue with him and the vice-Mayor.
Crowd management can be overwhelming. If it is not something that the security normally has to do, it will make you twitchy. It has nothing to do with the type of people, it has everything to do with the number of people.
If you would like to discuss personal security and crowd management, I would be happy to educate you.
I have years of experience in the field

By: bfra on 12/23/10 at 11:51

Now, short on time today, but will add for g & girlie, it takes someone very uninformed, to think, it is only Davidson countians or even Tennesseans, for that matter, are the only ones to use & enjoy the Fairgrounds.

Leave it to yogi to combine a salutation for a perfectly decent holiday with a snarky comment. Way to dirty up Christmas dude!

By: brrrrk on 12/23/10 at 11:59

And in light of the holidays....

"Just a minute - just a minute. Now, hold on, Mr. Potter. You're right when you say my father was no businessman. I know that. Why he ever started this cheap, penny-ante Building and Loan, I'll never know. But neither you nor anyone else can say anything against his character, because his whole life was - why, in the twenty-five years since he and Uncle Billy started this thing, he never once thought of himself. Isn't that right, Uncle Billy? He didn't save enough money to send Harry to school, let alone me. But he did help a few people get out of your slums, Mr. Potter, and what's wrong with that? Why - here, you're all businessmen here. Doesn't it make them better citizens? Doesn't it make them better customers? You - you said - what'd you say a minute ago? They had to wait and save their money before they even ought to think of a decent home. Wait? Wait for what? Until their children grow up and leave them? Until they're so old and broken down that they... Do you know how long it takes a working man to save five thousand dollars? Just remember this, Mr. Potter, that this rabble you're talking about... they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn't think so. People were human beings to him. But to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they're cattle. Well, in my book he died a much richer man than you'll ever be. " - George Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life

Hey yogi,

Here's something for you to read so you know what to do if you happen to be visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve....

It's free.... right up your alley.

By: brrrrk on 12/23/10 at 12:29

Just read a very interesting anonymous quote....

"What good is Christmas on the outside, if there is no Christmas on the inside?"

By: yogiman on 12/23/10 at 12:40

I'm ahead of you on that reading, brrrrk. I read that book in my childhood. I enjoyed it back then, but consider; how much difference is there in our society now?
