One notion, one nation

In November 1976 — America's Bicentennial — a funny thing happened when my wife and I voted in our very first Presidential election as naturalized U.S. citizens. We cancelled each other's vote by electing rival candidates.

Now, eight presidential elections later today, we still drive to the polling booths together, and cast our individual votes. Neither of us is a registered Democrat or Republican but we pride ourselves as individual independent electors in the real sense of the word, with no party affiliation.

And whether we continue to vote for the winning candidate or not is not as important as making that simple, single and sacred American duty of individual suffrage. We have encouraged our children to do likewise.

Voting is a serious American business. Your ‘one vote’ is ‘one notion’ that upholds our ‘one nation.’ If you haven't yet, go cast you vote.

Another message of hope

Your Magdalene House article [The City Paper, Nov. 3] comes at such an important time for our city, our state [and] our country. Each day, these courageous women are finding hope, courage, healing and faith when they walk into the open arms of the Magdalene transitional house after their years in prison or on the streets.

These women have spoken to employees at our [Corrections Corporation of America] corporate office as part of our company’s charitable giving efforts, and they’ve inspired us with their will to love and uplift themselves despite the physical and emotional battles they’ve faced.

A group of these women and Magdalene executives recently shared poignant stories of hope to a female Kentucky prison that CCA owns and operates. Tears of compassion and empathy were shed that day by the Magdalene women, the incarcerated women and the correctional staff.

We know that our community so very generously gives to area nonprofit agencies, and all of us recognize that tightening economies make giving even more meaningful. As head of my company’s charitable contributions giving, we are proud to support this agency that is truly reshaping lives and helping these women realize the beauty that resides inside. We hope businesses and individuals alike can continue to bless Magdalene House, so its mission can further reach the women who most need its messages of hope.

Yeah, and Obama’s grandmother died on Sunday. Lot’s of last minute drama, man-made and otherwise.Sarah Palin may have beaten the rap this time around, though she was found guilty by an earlier panel, but I don’t like her style of governance. Her husband, Todd, did the dirty work in the “Troopergate” scandal and he took the blame for it, claiming his wife Sarah was kept in the dark. Sarah swore that she knew nothing about Todd pressuring Trooper Wooten’s boss. Like Tricky Dick Nixon, Todd & Sarah used the old “plausible deniability” tactic to avoid being held accountable for their actions. In Sarah and Todd’s case the denial is not very plausible, Sarah must have known what her husband was up to, it’s either that or Todd is the real power behind the beauty queen’s throne. Is Sarah Palin a liar or Todd’s sock-puppet? Either way, she is unfit for public office, in my humble opinion. When and if Senator Stevens steps down, Sarah-Cuda will be able to appoint herself as US Senator from Alaska, a six-year federal gig and an excellent stepping stone to the US Presidency. Doctor McCain, evil genius, may have created a monster; Sarah-Cuda is here to stay. It appears that McCain’s Monster will continue to terrorize the non-believers, long after the creator fades from the scene.

By: Dragon on 12/31/69 at 7:00

No, it's just suppression and willful ignorance of the MSM. As dargent7 pointed out, the information is old but not widely known. BTW, the is the second time Palin was cleared of wrongdoing.

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Obama has got a pass on his record with an eager-beaver media happy to dispose it down the drain in favor of Obama's rhetoric. If elected I hope Obama turns out to be the centrist of his rhetoric and not the leftist of his record. The tragedy is that because of the media's extraordinary bias this cycle many people will not be able to make an informed decision this election.I think that really sucks. If you're a commie then stand up and say so and let's have an up or down vote... populist vs. war hero. Instead we get a massive shellac of Obama's history... all of it blown-off with the implication that all Obama critics are racist. It is the media's fault this candidate has not been vetted. And should Obama win it will be the media's fault if he and the uber-left congressional leadership takes this country down in Randian flames. For some reason Shrugged was always her more popular book but, as I’ve said before, Fountainhead was more prophetic.

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Sat on it... we've been screaming it from the top of our lungs for 6 months! The media wanted to give Obama a 1/3 of the vote head start with early voting and is now only mentioning it because after the election it's sure to be reported and they don't want to be pointed out as inept and biased. Why do you think all the polls tightened up in the last week? The full court press to pump up Obama has to converge with the reality of the election or all of their weighting models will be shown to be either inept or biased.Am I the only one paying attention?

Has anyone noticed how exhausted Mr. McSame is these days? Imagine if he were in office and had to keep up a grueling schedule day after day after day. Can you say President Palin? I can't. It makes me throw up a little. That's why Obama supporters needn't worry today.

By: dargent7 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

First, I misstated the Rev. Wright as Obama's preacher....Let's define Republican/Conservative for the honorable TN Conjob: "Even though we voted for an idiot TWICE and overtly supported ALL his policies, we'll abandon him NOW and pretend he's NOT one of us."Let's continue doing what we've been doing the last 8 years and hope for a different outcome".(behind closed doors I'm sure some Repubb strategists are asking, "Who can we blame and pin our stupidity on this time around should McCain win and continue to fu** the country up?"

All the misguided liberals just don't get that almost everything about Obama's campaign is fraudulent. He masquerades as a uniter while dividing, polarizing and alienating us. He denies he's liberal, when objective sources score him as the most liberal senator. He says he barely knows militants and radicals that he has spent his lifetime cavorting and whose worldviews he shares. He brazenly disguises welfare redistributions as tax cuts. He and his surrogates keep changing his tax plan.Obama's ideas about spreading the wealth, entrepreneurial selfishness, the ongoing original sin in our Constitution, the inherent evil of corporations, nationalized health care, and the civil rights movement not doing enough to bring about economic justice, a euphemism for Marxism used by radicals, like Bill Ayers, who still hate America are you liberals not concerned at just how far Obama might go if he's got a nearly veto-proof Democratic majority at his back? With his known discomfort with American exceptionalism, his naive mindset about good and evil in the world, his reckless underestimation of threats to America, his stated intention to disarm our nuclear weapons unilaterally, his open-borders extremism, his willingness to relax our intelligence monitoring, and his misguided concern for terrorists' rights, how can America be as secure under his watch? With his sordid background in community organizing and his relationship with an organization that is engaged in a effort to steal this election, his thug tactics to investigate and silence his critics, and his Democratic colleagues' willingness to use government to shut down conservative talk radio, are you liberals not worried about our liberties under an Obama administration? Before our very eyes, America is about to elect as president the most radical man ever to run for this office credibly. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Loner: re, Democracy Lite. This is where I find fault with our current political system as well. Unless a true majority votes for Chuck Baldwin (and maybe even then) the Electoral College can/will cast the vote for whomever they will, probably one of the "big two".None-the-less, happy voting.

Chief: Not so fast. I was pointing out the Obama video re: coal cos. was shot in Jan.'08 and just surfaced on Sunday? And today, Palin's abuse of power panel released her "not guilty" TODAY. And Alaska Se. Steven's corruption trial where he was found guilty on all 7 charges had some nut juror say she went to the races instead of a funeral for her father...it's the TODAY part, Election Day, all this last minute "Swift Boating" is occuring. These two have been campaigning for two years.NOTHING should "come to light" 8 hours before the polls open!

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 7:00

"Then the GOP was not very efficient in getting it to the voters"Well I guess that's true, Nemo... but my point stands. Every time someone would criticize Obama-act... the media would quickly defend Obama with Obama-speak. I really don't understand it. This is a neurosis bordering on the level of the Global Warming Religion. Maybe it's an extension of the Bush Derangement Syndrome or something but the media's been out clearing the path for Obama with the fervor of the First Crusade.I mean they're always in the tank for the liberal but this is like nothing I've ever seen or even studied in all of American history.

By: dargent7 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Funditto: Know why I'm worried? See those electronic ballot machines at the polling ststions? The logo is: DIEBOLD. Isn't that CEO one who said in 2000 he'd do "whatever it takes to get Bush elected"? It's almost 2009 and America can't get a reliable, accurate election? One w/o lawyers present at the counting? How insipid.

By: Funditto on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Re: the first post. Thank God for Google. A quick look at McSame's energy tax shows the EPA says he will do the same thing he's accusing Obama of saying.People are smarter these days and a few seconds on google almost always refutes silly issues.

By: Funditto on 12/31/69 at 7:00

I'm not worried. I voted early and had no problems. More than ever so have others and there has been no problem. If McCain wins, I'm certain it will be because he got more votes. And I'm positive that won't be the case no matter how broken the machines may be.

By: chiefpayne568 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

dargent7,"NOTHING should "come to light" 8 hours before the polls open!"Agreed...yet information seems to be coming in trickles. I blame the news media for being lazy as heck. Those guys COULD have gotten the information but either didn't want to put it out, wanted to wait to put it out, OR just NOW found it out. Either way, the media should be castigated for it.

Bush is a hero, Dargent... if history is honest at all it will be kind to him. As I toured the San Diego harbor last weekend all those new battleships with modern high-speed radar tracking systems that can track a thousand inbound targets at the same time and new advanced missile and gun targeting systems, I said to myself, thank you President Bush! We have seen an unprecedented advancement of our high-tech defensive and offensive capabilities under this president in his modernization of the military with his rebuild since the post cold-war draw-down and that will serve us well in the years to come.Should he win and the world really test Obama's mettle, as Biden claims it will; then at least Obama will have the tools of a surgeon rather than a chainsaw to retaliate.

By: girliegirl on 12/31/69 at 7:00

I'm a Dem, and even I can realize that TNConservative has a point that Obama is NOT a uniter by any means. He's absolutely the biggest antogonist ever drummed up by the far left. He's never reached out to the conservatives once, and as far as I can see, he's probably alienated the majority of the conservative support base. So as all of the readers begin to line up in unemployment lines, those who voted for Obama have only themselves to blame.

Liberal Democrats have been preaching bipartisanship while exhibiting the nastiest partisanship in my lifetime, calling Bush "King George III," "Hitler," a "murderer," a "war criminal," a "reckless cowboy," a "moron" and a "Christian throwback." They've caricatured Bush as an unbending partisan who wouldn't reach across the aisle, in the face of his countless and mostly rebuffed bipartisan legislation. More disinformation. They've deliberately divided this nation on the basis of race, class, gender and religion while telling us, that conservatives are racists, greedy, sexists, homophobes and religious bigots. The propaganda machine, Democrats, the liberal media and liberal bloggers have portrayed President Bush, Vice President Cheney and America as dark and evil forces and have whipped the country into a frenzy of desperation, setting the table for a charismatic mesiah type leader to deliver us from the despair they've manufactured with relentless precision.Obama, with his mysterious past then burst upon the scene with the premeditated purpose of capitalizing on the public's perceived woes by offering dramatic change and unspecified hope. It seems as if the script was written just for him, he stepped right into his role, expanding on this theme of despair. He stressed how bleak conditions are, how unfair America is to the less fortunate and middle class, how ugly America is in foreign affairs, how the values of average Americans are warped, how hardworking producers who oppose confiscatory tax rates but who contribute more to charity than Obama and his running mate even contemplate are selfish, and how America is a global environmental menace.

NNoseworthy, Americans ought to ask, “If our current system is so great, how come we did not export that very same product to the liberated Iraqis?” Where’s the Iraqi Senate? Where’s the Iraqi House of Representatives? Where’s the Iraqi Electoral College? What, no Iraqi White House? No four-year terms, with a limit of two, for the Chief Executive and Commander-In-Chief, the Iraqi President?Prime Minister? Ruling coalitions of ministers? How un-American is that? Those poor devils in Iraq did not get a system like ours, they got a neoconic concoction of British-style, parliamentary rule, blended with local theocracy, all shoved down their throats - and all supervised by the occupying military power. But hey, I suppose it beats what they had – Baathist, one-party rule with muderous, dynastic leadership at the top.
